Rationale for Project In Australian society it is normal for people to drink on the regular basis because it has been embedded into our society and into our culture. This can be shown in Appendix one where it shows the amount of alcohol that is consumed by people who are 14 years and older. The results of that show that 18% people drink two to three times a week. One of the Major reasons for this is because it is a part of Australia’s social life because when someone is born, people drink, when someone dies, people drink, when someone gets married, people drink, when someone gets divorced, people drink, at graduation, people drink and even when people get promoted and get the sack, people drink. However, from a test that was done in 2011. People who were aged 15, 34.6% people of that age bracket drank in the last month, whilst 20.1% drank in the last week. This is clearly showing that the education that is clearly being provided by the federal government is not working because at age 15 people should not be drinking even though they are with a parent. According to brighteyecounselling.com (2014), “Prolonged Drinking leads to instability of emotions, depression is the most common effect of long-term alcohol use. Alcohol is a powerful nervous system depressant, that is why it is so relaxing”. This is showing that binge drinking is not fixing the emotional problems that teens may be facing but they are making them worse, which is currently not being taught by schools, because they have not been through the experience themselves and therefore their teaching methods would be ineffective Because of the reasons above a better education system to help students not just in St Mary’s College but in schools all over Australia is required. This would be beneficial to students understand the consequences that binge drinking can have on the people around them including, friends, family and the emergency services what work to keep them safe every
