The song Drew Barrymore was written by an artist by the name of SZA in January of 2017. It is one of her most popular songs on the album Ctrl, which also made it on Rolling Stones list of the 50 Best Albums of 2017. SZA’s target audience for the song is mostly younger women. Although the song may seem like it is a love song when first hearing it, it actually is explaining how most women are raised to act and be a certain way, gender rules pressured onto women around the world, and how the media interprets these ideas of the ideal woman. The title of the song is named after one of America’s well known actresses Drew Barrymore, who is actually SZA’s favorite actress. Drew has pretty much been in the industry her whole life starting off in commercials back when she was barely a year old. She has played roles in movies such as Never Been Kissed, Charlie’s Angels, Poison Ivy, 50 First Dates, Bad Girls, etc. In each role that Drew played she has always been the girl that was different and usually judged harshly over everything she did. SZA explains in interviews that she relates to Drew Barrymore because it is not always easy having all eyes on your every move and growing up in the public eye. Also that the roles Barrymore played in Never Been Kissed and Poison Ivy were …show more content…
She says “Is it warm enough for you outside baby”. This I feel like is her asking if she is “hot” enough or sexy enough for him. She is questioning if her physical appearance lives up to the standards that this guy or even society has of her. Comparing this to Drew Barrymore once again, in most of her roles she the insecure girl who is searching for her identity and I think that that is what SZA is trying to describe through these exact lyrics. Another reference that SZA makes is to a song written by Donnie Trumpets featuring Noname in 2015 called “Warm Enough”. In the song they say “Who are you to tell me I’m not warm enough for
Stereotypes are common in the United States because people have different beliefs and ideals how they view others. The article "Ghetto Bitches, China Dolls, and Cha Cha Divas" by Jennifer Pozner demonstrates the negative racial and stereotypes use in the famous national TV show America's Next Top Model. She stated that a model was making a decision whether she was more tied to her ethnicity or her nationality. Given that this situation is becoming more important in America which makes the melting pot impossible to achieve. Tyra Banks, a former supermodel and the host of the show, yelled at a African America contestant is considered racialism to Pozner. For my consideration stereotypes are a way that build up and organize the society. Furthermore,
Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.
Using the murder of Dee Ann’s mother as a means to intertwine the lives of the characters together, Steve Yarbrough examines the nature of relationships in “The Rest of Her Life.” The relationships in the story take a turn after Dee Ann’s mother is killed, with characters seeking to act more on their own, creating distance between many relationships throughout the story. Independent lifestyles prevent emotional bonds that hold relationships together from forming, thus preventing the characters from maintaining healthy relationships. The dysfunctional relationship present between Dee Ann and Chuckie in “The Rest of Her Life” is the result of the characters ' desire for self-gratification.
Cyndi Lauper’s music has had an influence on women in the 80s. Through it, she showed women that it is ok to be themselves. In her first number one song, she was able to show that girls can just have fun being themselves without having men or boys around. In another one of her most famous songs, she told women that “Girls just wanna have fun” (“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”). In this song she spoke to her father about having fun with self confidence and not relying on boys. In fact, according to one article, “ Lauper’s success is the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice” (Cyndi Lauper). She never gave up on her dream. The fact that she was so successful in music, gave women the will be strong. Sometimes people would tell her to give up, but she would not give up and this made her work harder for her dream to become success. In his article about her, Kurt Loder wrote about Lauper in the Rolling Stones: “A wild and wonderful skyrocket of a voice Lauper's extraordinary pipes connect with the right material, there sults sounds like the beginning of a whole new golden age.” T...
The song was dedicated to his mother, Afeni Shakur. In the song, He is thanking his mother for working so hard while taking care of two poorly behaved kids (him and (Tupac Shakur)his sister). He talks about the reason he hung out with “thugs” in his area, which was because they showed him a form of love he never got from his father. He continuously thanks his mother and tells her how much she is appreciated for stepping up as a mother and father when his father was not present. She worked countless hours to put food on the table. Although his mother was a substance abuser, she still found a way to raise her kids. Tupac’s mother was not a very good role model but showed Tupac to stay humble. This song was chosen as the background of the PowerPoint because of the tremendous influence Afeni had on young

The novel 1984, written by George Orwell in 1949, details the life of a one Winston Smith and his constant, life long battle to defeat Big Brother. This dystopian vision of the future serves as a reminder to the reader that anything can happen, but it is up to humanity to shape what kind of future is wanted in the end. Although Orwell’s novel is rather convincing to the people of this time, it serves only as a warning to one of many outcomes that the world could face. This book was Orwell’s idea of how life could have ended up; had people not realized that there is always a way to change what we do not like in life. Through the author’s many literary techniques, he was able to weave in meaning and importance to simple everyday objects
“My love, she keeps me warm.” Without context, these song lyrics have no impact or power behind them. However, if told that these words were sung by a female vocalist, and preceded by the lyrics “I can’t change, even if it tried, even if I wanted to,” suddenly the words have meaning as a woman sings of her love for another woman (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). These lyrics come from the 2012 song “Same Love” by Macklemore with Ryan Lewis and featuring Mary Lambert. In the song “Same Love,” Macklemore raises his voice against the issues of discrimination, gay rights, and marriage equality that we see in today's era. He uses two fallacies in the song, but Macklemore’s use of the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos in his song “Same Love,” have a great level of success in proving the importance of gay rights and marriage equality.
This allows the listener to visualize a woman on fire but the woman not being affected by the flames pointing out a woman’s strength and also how much pain she can endure without showing signs of hurt. Further in the song Key’s goes on to say that “she got her head in the clouds, and she’s not backing down” shining a light on the amount of drive and persistence a woman has and how she will stop at nothing to reach her goals no matter how outlandish they may seem. A very powerful message is being given when Key’s says “looks like a girl but she’s a flame, so bright she can burn your eyes, better look the other way”. The use of the hyperbole helps compare a woman to having the power as equal to fire illustrating the emotional and mental strength a woman has in order to endure anything thrown her way, no matter her outer appearance. This statement also exaggerates a woman’s potential, instilling fear in anyone who doubts her, as well giving off the impression that you should never underestimate a woman because she is stronger than what meets the

The star text of a celebrity can help to decipher their image and transitions they may undergo. In order to better understand these transitions, one must know the definition of a star text. A star text is the sum of everything we affiliate with celebrities, which includes their body of work, promotion, publicity, and audience participation (Jackson, 08/09/16). One must note that “celebrity doesn 't happen because someone has extraordinary qualities – it is discursively constructed by the way in which the person is publicised and meanings about them circulate” (O 'Shaughnessy and Stadler 424). Destiny Hope Cyrus, “an American singer and actress, became a sensation in the television series
It has been played in many other countries and is listed in many major hit charts in those countries. It became one of her best-selling singles. Beyoncé has been singing about women’s independence since she was in the hit group “Destiny’s Child”. Many of her songs support women’s lifestyle and keep cheering up girls with her powerful and expressive vocals (Armstrong). In addition to her songs and lyrics, her beautiful appearance fascinates many female audiences and influences from teenagers to grown-ups as if she was a role model. A negative side of the video is that the video gives the impression that men are always to be blamed and women are always “victims” of the relationships, which is not

The re-invasion of pop music has brought out the theme of love and relationships even more so then ever. If a songwriter has “writer’s block”, then the simple solution is to write a love song. “All I want is you (Come over here baby). All I want is you (You make me go crazy)... I‘m gonna love you right...” (Aguilera), is part of the chorus to Christina Aguilera’s song “Come on Over”. The attraction to this song to girls is in thinking that they could be in the situation of the female character in the song, finding the perfect guy and spending time with him. For guys, the attraction comes because a beautiful girl is singing this and they can pretend that she is singing to them. Something similar is also found in the song “Doesn’t Really Matter” by Janet Jackson. In this song she is stating all the things she loves about a certain individual. She can live with his imperfections and doesn’t care what anyone else cares. “Doesn’t really matter what the eye is seeing. Cause I’m in love with the inner being. And it doesn’t really matter what they believe. What matters to me is you’re nutty, nutty, nutty for me.” (Janet Jackson) This song is good in that it is a love song unlike many out there today. In this song we see that the main character loves her man because of who he is.
Robin Thicke has a popular songs called Blurred Lines which was released in mid 2013. The song spread quickly and rose straight to the top of the charts. This is where the song remained for the next ten weeks; which was the first time any single lasted that long since 2005. A majority of people had at least heard the song, if they weren’t able to sing every word of it. Many people found the song to be undeniable catchy, but not many people looked at the subtext of the lyrics. As the song remained popular for a longer period of time, people became aware of what the song lyrics were actually saying. The literal lines of the song talks about meeting a girl and not knowing if there is blurred lines because she’s a good girl. Once the lyrics were analyzed deeper, many realized that the song was not as innocent as it seemed.
