Casual Dress Code: Positive or Negative Effects Dress codes are a huge part of being in the working world. Dress code is considered to be a “set of standard clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organizations activity” (Wright Gen, n.p). In discussing dress code a major issue is many people do not realize what business casual is considered to be which causes a difference in opinion (Diana Saiki, n.p.). There are many reasons why dress codes have become so important in all aspects of life. A smarter dress can lead to smart choices on the job. Psychologist Dr. David Lewis states that, in the big business perspective dressing proper will more likely make you think smart. A clear message from employees showed that they would prefer to dress up in an office environment to encourage a smart feel in the office (British Workers "Prefer to Dress up Rather than Dress Down’). A smart dress code may be wise for an office setting to help encourage confidence and respect among colleagues. Many office workers had reported they dress up more than they are required by dress code. At many places there are manuals that will include reference to dress code standards which can range from extreme detail to few specifications on dress; even though many of the employees will feel that dress is an unimportant issue in an organization (Rafaeli & Pratt). It’s feared that with a casual dress code will come a casual attitude and with a relaxed dress will come relaxed manners, relaxed morals and relaxed productivity (Work Appeal). In contrast, one study conducted by The Master’s College in California the conclusion on the effect of performance in the workplace based on dress code was that it was equally positive and negative; therefore dress code is a personal preference giving no way to predict how dress code will effect productivity (Jensen). This study showed the best way to view dress code is by viewing the individual.
