It is a privilege to write a letter in support of Dr. Samiksha Raut’s nomination for the Faculty Student Success Award. Dr. Raut was my instructor for Introductory Biology I during the Spring 2016 and Introductory Biology II during Fall 2016. During my time as her student, I have gained much respect and admiration for the work she does for her students, and she continues to be a strong positive influence in my life today.
As one of the first college science courses I have taken, Dr. Raut’s Introductory Biology I class set a standard for my expectation of science courses at UAB. Her classes are rigorous and challenging, but she made the effort to make that course accessible and feasible. One way she makes the class accessible was by making sure she knows everyone’s name. Being a freshman in a class of over 200 people, it is easy to be lost in a sea of people and feel like the professor will never connect to their students. Dr. Raut, however, made the effort to know everyone’s name and face. This ability of hers is not something one would particularly experience in other large science courses. Raut. Throughout her classes, she would provide inspirational speeches and anecdotes to push students to excel in her class and see the importance of pursing an education in science. One of the personal anecdotes she shared about her past teaching experiences reminded me of my mother and her pursuit for a scientific education. Dr. Raut constantly displays the characteristics of the great professors who helped my mother further her education by taking an active interest in her students and tries to provide guidance and mentorship by emailing various campus opportunities, providing resources for academic support and being accessible to talk with students about their
“ First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win” (Mahatma Gandhi). Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar. Throughout his life Gandhi helped those in need. He was taught that everyone and everything is holy. He married at the custom age of 19 and went to London to study law. The thing that helped Gandhi promote nonviolence is that he worked his entire life saying that violence didn’t change the way people acted. He lived his life saying that an eye for an eye only made the whole world blind. Gandhi’s nonviolent movement worked because he had something to prove and everyone else in the world agreed with him.

For the third time today, everyone in the classroom was in a standstill. Eventually, I was greeted with eighteen pair of eyes, which appeared to say, ‘who in the hell do you think you are talking to her like that?’ heck, you would’ve thought I called the girl out of her name with the dirty stares I was receiving.
This course and as in Honors Biology, we were taught in a more oneself teaching rather than a lecture. I like the idea of not having a lecture, but when the teacher took a day to do a quick overview of each chapter, I learned the material and understood the material the best. I wish that we had that in each unit because I truly do like biology and when I understand a new concept fully it made me feel 10 times more comfortable on the test and the
Differences in mentoring and guiding styles of the mentors can have a considerable influence and impact on the mentee’s development of the skills and personalities. Through the arrogant and ambitious yet skillful guidance of Dr. Blalock, Vivien Thomas is able to learn how to rightfully challenge conventional theories in order to develop revolutionary changes in science. Additionally, Thomas also gains more confidence in himself and has the courage to stand up against discrimination. On the other hand, I have also learned how to be diligent and passionate about what I do as a consequence of Dr. Cron’s caring and dedicated mentoring styles. In the end, the tutelage and guidance of the mentors can have lasting effects on their mentees’ lives.
During the time that I had the opportunity of having Ms. Younus as my student, she consistently impressed me by demonstrating a strong desire in becoming a future physician. Her eagerness to learn about the problems patients were experiencing was evident as she came motivated each week and asked insightful questions. Unbeknownst to me, I was in for a rude awakening. The class setting was nothing like it had been before. I truly felt as though I had entered some sort of bizarro world, some sort of twisted parallel universe. In many of my classes, we were expected to silently trudge through copious amounts of busy work. In fact, one of my teachers would quickly scribble our daily instructions on the board, proceeding to bury himself in a stack of newspapers that stood mile high. The man had no interest in learning our names, let alone providing proper academic guidance. I was now facing a real obstacle. How could I charm him and show him what a cool guy I am? My affinity for biology comes from my childhood days that I spent watching dissection of rats and looking at the cellular structure under microscope. My mother, being a professor of biology regularly used to take me with her to a Biology lab and that is where my journey towards medical career began. Early on in my life, my family went through a long agony of my father's illness and death. This became a solitary stimulus for me to take up this profession and a driving force to strive for excellence. Going through that turmoil of recurrent hospital visits gave me a firsthand experience of an anguishing family.

Kareem is already showing signs of a promising future in a scientific career by taking initiative in the expression of his ideas. During my experiences working in the medical field, I quickly learned that medicine is not just about the intricacies of the body or prescribing medications to fix the body’s shortcomings. There are many more challenges and difficulties that are involved in healthcare that involve many interpersonal skills. This summer I have volunteered with the medical director at Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, North Carolina. After a few weeks of shadowing, the medical director asked me to see a patient to discuss her primary complaints before he joined me. I went into the patient’s room, introduced myself, and waited for a response. After multiple attempts and no recognition from the patient, the physician came in to join us.
Instructors of a class need to observe their students to notice which gender type are speaking out more in classroom discussions, and find out if their classroom fits the standards of a male dominated talking classroom. If an instructor finds their classroom fits the mold they should seek a new method that aims at males and females to receive an equal opportunity, or use different methods that some males prefer, and some that females like better. Following advice from Krupnick, “Teachers should learn each student 's name and make sure to use names frequently, so that all students know they are recognized members of the class” (373). Making all students feel comfortable in class leaves the students more relaxed and could leave students feeling comfortable to contribute during classroom discussions.

Building upon the learning climate within the classroom, it is vital for teachers to take the time to build relationships with their students, to develop a rappel and level of respect whilst getting to know students strengths and weaknesses as well as their interests. By taking the time to get to know students, teachers are able to cater to students likes and dislikes and levels of abilities through adaption of classroom materials and procedures (Campbell, Gilmore & Cuskelly, 2003) thus creating a more enjoyable and successful learning outcome.
