Dr. Lecter’s attitude towards Clarice changes throughout the movie through direct exposure. His attitude towards Clarice is first dismissive. He realizes during their first interview that he was being dissected by Clarice (his response when she attempts to give him a questionnaire to fill out) and shuts down his interest, making it obvious that he has a negative attitude towards her. Throughout the rest of the movie, his attitude towards her becomes more positive, even coming as close as him showing physical affection towards her. This example becomes apparent when Clarice is being led away by security because of her lack of necessary involvement in the case at that time. Dr. Lecter hands back her case file through an opening between the iron bars in his cell. When Clarice …show more content…
goes to retrieve the case file back from him, his finger caresses hers, and gives her a slight smile. Clarice’s attitude towards Dr.
Lecter remains neutral through the movie. It’s neither negative nor positive. Dr. Lecter is merely a means to an end for Clarice. She’s involved with him simply because she was asked to, and has to catch a killer in order to save lives. Persuasion was a tool used by Clarice in order to help raise Dr. Lecter’s attitude towards her, in hopes to increase her chances of getting vital information from him. She used Central route of persuasion. Clarice offered Dr. Lecter a great opportunity to be able to go outside, and swim in the ocean, for one full week out of the year in exchange for information about Buffalo Bill. Dr. Lecter was suspicious at first, but the persuasion source was credible to him. He may not have respected Clarice at this point, but he trusted her. He was familiar with her, attracted to her, and accepted the expertise she insisted she had on the subject. The scene that introduces Buffalo Bill uses the same idea of deception that Ted Bundy used to kidnap his victims, by pretending to be injured in able to get his victim not only find him harmless, but to approach him to help. The next victim of Buffalo Bill, Catherine Martin,
is carrying groceries to her car when she notices a man with a cast struggling to get a sofa into the back of a truck. Catherine is obviously driven by prosocial behaviors that are very altruistic. She see’s Bill struggling and failing repeatedly and it’s obvious she feels bad for the man with the cast. She approaches Bill and is convinced by him to step into the back of the van and help guide the sofa to the back of the van. She is promptly kidnapped through Bill’s deceitful ruse and is taken to Bill’s home, and put into a deep pit in his basement. Bill then proceeds to use operant conditioning to get Catherine to do as he wishes. The scene demonstrating this starts with the viewers seeing Bill peering into the pit, with Catherine standing at the bottom, holding a bottle of lotion. “It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again” he repeats to her as she cries for his pity. Catherine is wet and shaking (possibly from the cold and fear). Its obvious Bill has been using physical punishment in able to get Catherine to continuously apply lotion to her skin. Catherine refuses to put on the lotion until Bill anger becomes apparent, then she hastily puts on the lotion, knowing through operant conditioning what will happen if she refuses much longer.

During the criminal proceeding of the Andrea trial, there were several mental health professionals that were call by the defense to testify in the first trial, including several of her treating psychiatrists. The Character Hannibal Lecter, from Thomas Harris's series of suspense novels as well as the movie adaptations, represents the bestial truth behind every man and woman. Lecter was a renowned psychiatrist with cannibalistic tendencies and a thirst for vengeance. The scariest element of Hannibal was how human he was; furthermore, Hannibal wasn't a vampire, werewolf, or zombie, he was an extremely intelligent and polite man who was partially a victim of remarkably unfortunate circumstances. The juxtaposition of the monster within Lecter and the civil, rational human being part of Lecter gives him depth of character and makes him more relatable to the audience, scaring them more than any supernatural monster ever could. Hannibal Lecter experienced
