The major characters in this book are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde who are physically the same person but not in any other way. There is also Dr. Lanyon and Mr. Utterson. Dr. Jekyll is a very educated doctor. He is in his mid 40’s and has black wavy hair. He is an average height man. He is very interested in the split personalities of people in which he refers to as “dual nature of humanity”. Mr. Hyde is the evil part of Dr. Jekyll. Mr. Utterson is very respectable and honest man. Mr. Utterson is the one that uncovers the secret behind Dr. Jekyll’s experiment. Mr. Utterson is Dr. Jekyll’s and Mr. Lanyon’s Lawyer. Dr. Lanyon is an old friend of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Utterson. He does not believe in Dr. Jekyll’s experiments. When he finds out that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are one, he is very shocked.

Minor Characters:
There are a few minor characters in this story. There is Mr. Enfeild who is a cousin of Mr. Utterson. Enfeild is the first person to notice the strange behavior of Dr. Jekyll (Mr. Hyde). There is also Poole, Dr. Jekyll’s very faithful servant. He asks for Mr. Utterson’s help when he assumes Dr. Jekyll was murdered. Inspecter Newcomen is a police inspector from Scotland Yard who is investigating the Carew murder case. Mr. Utterson has a chief clerk who’s name is Mr. Guest. Mr. Guest is the one who Discovers the similarity in the handwritings of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Bradshaw is Dr. Jekyll’s footman. He guards the house to make sure Mr. Hyde doesn’t escape. Sir Danvers Carew is a very respected guy who Mr. Hyde murders which sets of the search for him by the police. Last but not least there is a servant who sees Mr. Hyde assaulting Carew and tells the police.

Setting:
The story takes place in the nineteenth-century. The location this story takes place in is London. The first eight chapters of the story move quickly between many different locations. However it is mainly in the street by the back door of Dr. Jekyll's house and inside the houses of Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, Dr. Lanyon, and Mr. Utterson. Chapters nine and ten are documents written by Mr. Lanyon and Dr. Jekyll, and have no specific location.
