“Wow…are you absolutely sure there is no chance our baby will not be born with Down syndrome?” I asked the doctor after being told my baby was not the healthy baby girl my husband and I had hoped for. “Yes, ma’am we are 100% positive your daughter has Down syndrome…now I hate to tell you this, but I must say the best choice for both you and your baby is to have an abortion.” The doctor said. Wait. What? My doctor wants me to abort my baby?? “Doctor, I understand that this is how you feel, but this is really shocking news and a lot to take in right now. Do you mind if we go home so we as the parents can decide what we need to do?” “Yes ma’am of course; however, I need you to make a decision as soon as possible”. He said in response to my question. …show more content…
After all, he has not said a word since the doctor delivered the news and I’m afraid that he is not going to like my decision. We really need to talk about this, I guess I better ask. “So what do you think about all this?” “Honey I know this is hard, but I want you to know I love you and this decision is yours to make. That being said, I feel like we will be fine, yes it is going to be hard raising a child with a disability like this, but surly our parents, church, and friends will help.” My husband
Susan has a successful career, but she wants to have a family also and balance the two. She finally becomes pregnant after trying for a long time, but tests show that the baby will be born with Down syndrome. She has been trying for so long, and now the doctor is recommending an abortion.
There can be many reasons as to why a woman might have an abortion. It may be due to an unwanted pregnancy in general, health issues with the mother that will cause her sickness throughout the pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, and even awareness of a physical flaw with the child such as down syndrome. Prenatal testing has made it possible to determine whether or not a baby will have down syndrome during pregnancy, and research has shown that 92% of women who are aware of their child having a disability, abort their pregnancy. One statistic showed that from 2002 to 2010, 17,983 babies with disabilities were aborted in the UK. It is mentioned that many of these babies were compatible for life outside of the womb. This means that the baby could have survived, and abortion was not necessary.
After finally getting pregnant she discover that her baby have Down syndrome. She is now contemplating on whether or not she will go through with her pregnancy or have an abortion. The dilemma is that she could give birth to a baby who for years was trying to get pregnant with or have an abortion because the baby would be a burden and will need assistance for the rest of the baby’s life. To resolve the dilemma she could do the following:
If a mother has health issues that could place her life at risk while having a baby, then that mother may need to have an abortion to save her life. Head (2015) does include, “Even though pro choice protestors seem to be pro abortion, that is not completely what their argument is about,” (para. 6). Many pro choice leaders look for the best option for a mother and the baby. They look for many alternatives that give the mother and her child both their best outlook on life. A lot of parents do not have the capability or money to handle a child with disabilities, which the article failed to show. A large amount of parents consider if abortion will be the best for that type of situation. Head (2015) does include, “Circumstances may put someone in a position where abortion is the best option,” (para. 20). The author stating this shows views where if the mother can be hurt, or even die.

There are many disorders or syndromes that cause people to behave and act differently than others. Out of all these syndromes, I picked one of them. This is a very rare syndrome and an estimate of 4% of children in the U.S. have it. It is known as the translocation down syndrome. Translocation down syndrome is a type of down syndrome caused by rearranged chromosome material. A child with translocation down syndrome has 3 #21 chromosomes instead of the two pairs. Here, one of the chromosomes is attached to another and the extra chromosome is what causes the health problems is what causes the health problems associated with the disorder known as down syndrome.
With the guidance of their physician, Baby Does’ parents chose to withhold medical care and surgery due to the conclusion still leaving the child with severe retardation. “Officials at the hospital had the Indiana Juvenile Courts appoint a guardian to determine whether or not to perform the surgery. The court finally ruled in favor of the parents and upheld their right to informed medical decision” (Resnik, 2011). Because of the decision made to withhold surgery and medical care, Baby Doe died five days later of dehydration and pneumonia.
Any child can be born with Down syndrome, which could include your child. Many people don’t really down what Down syndrome is. Around the entire world not many really know what Down syndrome really is and the importance of it. Down syndrome has different causes that one should know about. There are many different types of health issues with Down syndrome. Down syndrome defines all the causes and the different health issues that Down syndrome holds.
Children born to older parents are at greater risk for genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. No one knows what causes the chromosomal abnormality that results in Down syndrome, a condition according to the National Association for Down syndrome, affects one in 800 to 1,000 babies in the United States. Any woman regardless of her culture, race and socio-economic status can have a baby with Down syndrome. However, a mother’ age seems to be a unifying factor among children with Down syndrome. Older women have a greater chance of giving birth to a baby with Down syndrome, and the risks increases with every passing year. The National Association for Down syndrome estimates the chance of having a baby with Down syndrome to be as follows:
“Almost half of all pregnancies among American women are unintended [and of those pregnancies about] 1.3 billion each year, are ended by abortion.” (Dudley). Most women that receive an abortion are clueless of the type of health risk that are associated with the abortion. According to the American Nurses Associated, “Patients have the moral and legal right to determine what [would] be done with their own person; to be given accurate, complete and understandable information in a manner that facilitates and informed judgement” (Barnes) Meaning, before given treatment the patient must be informed of some of the risks that are involved. They should be given all of the facts related to their situation in order to make an informed decision. Informing the patient of the risks associated with the procedure is done before every operation, or most operations. Women who have abortions are not informed of...
Giving birth is often looked upon as a miracle of life with remarkable experiences to come. However, others may think this miracle of life will be nothing but problems in their lives. Many females who are not ready for a baby seek abortion as the answer of their problems. Abortion is known to be one of the most debated issues in society. It is best defined as a “medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus” (“Merriam-Webster 's Learner 's Dictionary”).
According to this rebuttal statement, once the sperm enters the egg and it fertilizes, it is considered a human being. Therefore, human beings deserve the right to live. Based on this rebuttal, the opponent elaborately incorporates the biological beliefs from Jerome Legeune, the French geneticist, who discovered the chromosome abnormality that cause Down Syndrome. He stated, “to accept fact that after fertilization has taken place, a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion…the human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence”. According to Legeune, after an egg is fertilized, it is out of one’s hands to pick and choose. Therefore, once one has become pregnant, they should not pick and chooseif they want to have a baby or if they want to abort

The deliberate termination of a human pregnancy is called an abortion. Abortions are a widely debated subject throughout the world. In the United States, abortions are legal due to the Roe v. Wade law. Some would argue that abortions are ethnically and morally wrong, while others assert it is simply a woman’s choice. There are a number of legitimate reasons why a woman would choose to abort her unborn; financial status, age and health are just a few. With today’s technology and a certified doctor, this procedure is harmless to both the mother and her fetus. Abortions are viewed by many as dangerous and immoral acts of humanity against an unborn fetus. But in reality, abortions terminate a pregnancy that could result in a child being born into a family with inadequate finances, irresponsible parenting, and possible health problems. For these reasons, abortions offer a perfectly viable solution in situations that would otherwise result in children being raised under circumstances that are at best, not ideal, and at worst, harmful and potentially dangerous.
I know some families get an abortion because their baby has Down syndrome.
