Some double standards that i’ve witnessed would be between men and women. Men are perceived to be stronger than women mentally and physically. Women are usually seen as victims and men are seen as the bad guy. A lot of women love to play the victim and point the finger at the men. A lot of women will run and try to defend women to help them play the victim role even further. Women are not victims and should be held accountable for their actions. In a relationship, a woman can go out to get a cup of coffee with a male friend, but if a male was caught doing that exact thing he would be accused of cheating. This is all caused by stereotypes. A stereotype is a classification of a group of people. It is not always accurate.
At a young age men are taught that boys don’t cry and not to talk about their feelings causing them to bottle up, while women are free to do the opposite. Many women are sensitive, but not all of them. There are some very tough women in this world who aren’t afraid to speak their mind and don’t take every little thing to heart.

Every society forms different cultures and social norms how people behave and constructs stereotypes and expectations of people based on how they were seen throughout history and cultural backgrounds. Once set, norms are unlikely to be changed over time. This social construction decides which group will have benefits and privileges and which won’t. One example of these social constructed norms is gender. Gender, regardless of how different cultures define it, is generally and mostly made up of masculinity, femininity.
Nowadays women should be treated equally, but some very common stereotypes are still used. For example, in my last birthday, I received a gift from my friend in a pink bag. Then, I asked my friend, why he picked a pink bag, he simply replied "all women like pink," but actually he did not know that my favorite color was blue, and that does not mean that I am a boy. On another occasion, I was taking care of my little cousin, he began to play soccer, and when I asked him if I could play with him, he answered me, "not because girls do not know how to play football," his answer surprised me, so I take his soccer ball, and I showed him that he was wrong, because women can play different sports.

She talked about the ideal double standard on how a man is glorified if he sleeps around and is encouraged to do so. However she found it frustrating that women who engage in sexual activity is seen as “loose” or even how women feel ashamed and/or embarrassed if and when they talk about sex. From a young age , many individuals worldwide are socialized according to their gender and what is appropriate for males and females. Socializing according to ones gender starts from the moment you are born when the nurses give you either a blue or pink blanket to wrap the child in. This allows society to known whether the child is a male or female. The double standard for gender occurs within many areas of development for instance the clothes one wears, the toys that are placed with, the jobs and careers one chooses in their later life. Attachment given by a child's parent reinforces an individual to be socialized and children can also contribute how their parents treat and see them , these are social constructs within parenting (Ambert,2012). All of these things can be gender separated and still are in today's society. Another area where males and females are socialized differently is in the area of sexuality and what is acceptable for males is not always for the female gender. Gender specific norms govern the appropriate amount of partners , when it is acceptable to engage in sexual activity and what motivates ones behavior (Kreager &Staff, 2009). This shows society individuals are socialized according to their gender because males are socialized into behaving a different way than girls but it still be accepted as a norm. Women are taught that it is okay to have sexual relationships but they need a reason, example being in a committed relationship, where as men just need a place. This is a common perception based on ones gender , formed from a western conservative view point ( Fugere et.al, 2008). Being a man, I have to be strong and tough through many situations. We cannot show many of our feelings like woman do because we will be considered weak. When my great grandfather died about four years ago, my sisters and my mother were crying, but my father, my brother and I were expected to stay strong and not cry. Although I wanted to break down, I held it in due to the expectation my family and other people had for me as a man.
1. My result for hostile sexism was between zero and one, while my score for benevolent sexism was between one and two. My scores were closest to the average female and male in England and Australia for benevolent sexism. However, my hostile sexism was very low compared to all the countries that were listed. My scores surprised me, because I did not expect my benevolent sexism score to be closest to England or Australia. More simply, I did not expect other females and males to have similar scores, so the graphs were shocking. My results were furthest from Cuba, Nigeria, and Syria. My scores for hostile and benevolent sexism were very low compared to average women and men in Nigeria, Syria, and Cuba. For this “Fight for Justice Assignment”, I decided to fight for the elimination of double standards in the society. As a society, we tend to overlook those issues that are so apparent in our everyday lives such as stereotyping of men and women. At an early age, children are taught to behave, and act in a certain way according to their genders. For example, males are expected to show aggression, toughness, competitiveness, and dominance in interpersonal relationships, whereas the females attribute to behaviours such as passivity, emotionality and subordination in interpersonal relationships. Double standard is defined by the Oxford University Press as, “a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups.” (Double Standard) With this being said, equality cannot be at its full potential with the existence of double standards hindering its growth. Double standards can be seen everywhere in relationships, businesses and even in advertisements.
Men feel pressure to fit in the category of what society describes as a man. They have the responsibility to be first in everything. Showing emotions should not be a part of men life. Men need to focus on their role to be the strong sex. Crying its weakness and its only meant for women. The other day I overheard my daughter’s grandmother asking her grandson why he was crying, she told him that he should not be crying for everything because that is only for girls and that he needed to learn that boys don’t cry. This action really pissed me off, how she dare to tell the little boy who is only 8, that he is not suppose to show how he feels because he is a boy. This is how society put in our mind since we are little the way we are suppose to act. I couldn’t agree more with Carlos Andres Gomez that states in his essay Confronting the Superhero Myth, “we need men who are striving to grow and learn and ask questions and risk being wrong and be humble and be better today than they were yesterday”. Men always say women over exaggerate or are too sensitive. Men can act this way too but women tend to take the emotional side of things a little more. Stephanie Foote says, “Women must have, much more act on, emotions.” Emotionally if a women when she is younger had a bad relationship with her father usually when their older having difficulties with men. Women who have better relations with their father have less difficulties with men when they are older.
Women are very capable creatures. They can open their own doors and defend themselves if they know where to strike a guy…it only takes one good hit. They know what they want and when they want it and if a guy doesn’t know these things automatically after a few years it’s a crisis. Women are mysterious. They have their ways of communicating their displeasure in such a way that no man on the planet can understand. Still, being a gentleman in the face of the impossible is still important.
