Soon after Donald Trump became the President of the United States, he made the call to cut the federal funding for organizations that provide women with abortion services. Interestingly, the debate about whether or not abortions should be legal has been going on for numerous years and the argument has always been between a woman’s right to her own body and an unborn child’s right to live a life. As no conclusion has been reached, GOP initiatives have consistently been trying to get rid of funding for places such as Planned Parenthood in order to force them into a decision they do not want to make. And finally Donald Trump has laid down the law so to speak and has taken away the funding for preventive health care, birth control, pregnancy tests and many other services women’s …show more content…
Because of this, being aware of what is going on with issues relating to women’s freedom is important for me to be able to validate my points and understand why or how people of higher power are limiting our freedoms. Before reading this article, I never knew that TV shows receive budgets to campaign on for awards. It boggles my mind the amount of money that is spent on trying to win one or two awards every year, money that could be used to help charities or different health organizations such as Planned Parenthood. Additionally, I did not know that federal funding provided so many services for these health organizations that will have to stop as soon as it is taken away. This relates back to class discussions as we consistently talk about the government having control of several parts of our lives which make no sense along with Donald Trump’s administration and their decisions. Which is most of the reason this issues relevant in my life right now so that I can participate in these discussions
Abortion is a topic that many don’t want to discuss. It’s a very personal decision that many women have to make each day, but in certain states, getting an abortion was becoming an even more difficult process. Not only did women have to decide to get an abortion that alone is a difficult choice, they now had to wait 24 hours, minors had to get consent, and/or inform the father of the child. But after all of this process, what if a woman couldn’t receive all of this? Would she be denied her right to get an abortion? The Supreme Court case, Planned Parenthood of PA v. Casey, wasn’t known for what it did, but mainly for what it did not do, which was not overruling Roe v. Wade, but reaffirming a woman’s right to an abortion; it questioned a state’s right to impose or place an “undue burden” on women.
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
Even to this day, women have not reached maximum equality, but the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade has helped the women’s equality movement drastically take a step in the right direction. Prior to the case, women had their rights very limited and restricted. Everyone was and still is entitled to their basic rights, however pregnant women were not. Their first, fourth, fifth, ninth, and fourteenth amendment rights were violated and were not addressed until Jane Roe testified in court. The decision made by the court still has a lasting impact even to this day. The landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was not just a win for Jane Roe, but a win for all women as it helped break the barrier that surrounded women’s equality.
“It is my conviction that taxpayer funds should not be used to pay for abortions or advocate or actively promote abortion either here or abroad,” Bush stated in his memorandum to reinstate the Mexico City Policy. However, the policy does not state that funds will be withheld if the US taxpayer’s money is used; it states that monies will be withheld if abortion services are offered at all, even if it is not US money. Douglas Johnson the legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee states, the “government will no longer..try to legalize abortion in countries in Latin America, Africa, and Muslim countries in which people are strongly opposed to abortion and believe in the protection of unborn children.” What Johnson fails to recognize is that in countries where abortion is legal women’s rights are being compromised. U.S. Representative Christopher H. Smith expresses his feelings in his article “A Congressional View: The Unborn Must be Protected” (Global Issues Electronic Journal) by stating, “Abortion is child abuse.” Smith also comments that when the policy was previously in effect it had no affect on the family planning money received by NGO’s. It may not have affected the money received but it did affect women who were denied the option of abortion services.
The common misconception about Planned Parenthood primary does abortions but that is simply not true. According to the reports from Planned Parenthood of America only three of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortions and not every Planned Parenthood clinic provides abortion services (Planned Parenthood Federation of America). A recent Pew Research Center poll recorded that two-thirds of voters under thirty believe that abortion should be legal in most or all cases (Laguen 2). This poses a bigger question, should the government be able to govern over women’s
“The beauty of me is that I am very rich” according to Donald Trump. His ignorance has lead him to do things that he shouldn’t being doing or has done. In the past few months he has been racist man that would insult people that are from a different race. When Trump started running for president he would insult and bully everybody in general not knowing the people’s stories. He made people seem like they are poor and have nothing to live for, Trump’s inability to see past his greed. He wants to separate the United States and wants people to think he is the best of the best; Trump should not be President.
Abortion is a controversial topic in today’s society as many opinions from different social groups on whether it should be legal or not create the big question: should the government be able to take away a woman’s reproductive right if it is to protect a fetus? In the United States particularly, much of the debate since the 1970s has focused on the Supreme Court case Roe v Wade, in which the court proclaimed women's’ rights to abortion but declared that the states could limit and regulate the procedure. That means that currently, the state of California allows abortions, but many groups against abortion, mostly called “pro-lifers,” still try to fight against it and want it banned. Women have a right to their own body and should
With the help of United States Government funding, Planned Parenthood and its affiliates have been men and women’s health care providers since 1933. Congressional bills have recently been written to defund this organization because of ethical issues that have risen about abortions carried out in these facilities. The defunding of Planned Parenthood would not only take away affordable family planning for those in need, but the ability to provide life saving cancer screenings and other health services as well.
Due to the progressive nature of my argument, I will divide my argument into three part. I will use the first part to provide a background of Planned Parenthood and the second part to analyze why Republican’s criticism on Planned Parenthood is inaccurate and should be doubted. I will use scientific evidence to prove that both to “Post Birth Abortion” and “Illegal Sale of Tissue” claims are wrong. For the third part, I will discuss some vital implications derived from Planned Parenthood debate, and how a political controversy like that teach us how a person should
Healthcare comes at a costly price, and many citizens in the US find themselves barely scraping by on their low-income earnings. So, they can’t always afford the necessary insurance to keep themselves and their families healthy. To help the underprivileged, “Planned Parenthood participates in a [federally] funding program called Title X… [This allows them to supply women] birth control, gynecological care, and other reproductive health services for women who cannot pay full price for health care services” (About Our Fees: Central and Western NY). This program does not pay for abortion, so in turn, abortion is their main revenue generator. Planned Parenthood is not just for women, though. They provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Getting the information out has two basic goals: 1. To let those who are underprivileged know there are options for them and 2. To lessen the need for these services, such as abortions and STD care, by educating those on the prevention of such necessities. Planned Parenthood does not just do this on their own; they correspond with many other affiliates to provide these educational programs and outreach to adolescents and
... justice, and evidence is provided towards the case of the Texas Women’s Health Program. The fight against abortion cannot stand solely on the pedestal of moral justice, just as budget cuts towards family planning and women’s health can be expected to stay without consequences to individuals across the state. Planned Parenthood should not a target for religious justice and women should not be put on the backburner when they make up half of our population. It should be and is the duty of state government to protect and best serve the people it looks over, and to isolate and mistreat so many across the state is to bring shame to all the advancements we have made previously. I hope that we can soon make amends to problems brought upon by false convictions, or at the very least have those for this bill realize that their morality is not reaching those who truly need it.
Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers “vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide” (Planned Parenthood). The funding that the Trump Administration took away from did not stop them from their cause. Planned Parenthood is the number one organization that supports this topic, partnering with them will help me propose my claim. “ Whether talking with members of Congress, parents, or faith leaders, or arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, we fight for commonsense policies that promote women's health, allow individuals to prevent unintended pregnancies through access to affordable contraception, and protect the health of young people by providing them with comprehensive sex education ” (Planned Parenthood). Getting a lot of supporters for this issue of convincing pro-life that they are wrong with the evidence-based material will provide many more
Although compromises based on reasons for abortion have been incorporated in laws such as the Hyde Amendment, which restricts Medicaid funding for abortion to so-called “hard” cases, many people now focus on time-based restrictions. This idea is more realistic and practical than banning abortion all together since there would still ...
Even though we have become more socially progressive as a society, the struggle for eliminating the shaming of women who’ve received an abortion or use Planned Parenthood services continues and there right to abortion is an argument that persists because of pro life advocates and the socially conservative agenda found in the Republican party. Many republican politicians and conservative religious groups have made it difficult for women to emotionally accept themselves for choosing to have abortions but they make it physically and financially difficult for them to access those resources. Access to clinics who preform abortions has become more limited and difficult to acquire in recent years. Procedures for clinics providing multiple types of
Millions of illegal abortions were done by the 1950s, and over a thousand women died each year as result. Moreover, millions of women who had illegal abortions were rushed to the emergency ward; some died of abdominal infection, and other, found themselves sterile and chronically ill. In 1969, 75% of the women who died from these abortions were either poor or of color. In the landmark case of Roe v. Wade (1973) the Supreme Court ruled that woman had the right of privacy under the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment to obtain an abortion, yet, keeping in mind that, protecting the health of the woman and the potential life of the fetus is the main interest. As result of this decision, safe and unpainful abortion services were offered to many women. In addition, some health care centers provided counseling, women’s group offered free referral services, and, non-profit abortion facilities were created. Nevertheless, legalization was not enough to ensure that abortions will be available to all women, women of low income and of color still found themselves without safe and inexpensive abortions. Between the early 1980s, feminist health centers provided low-cost abortions, however, by the early 1990s, only 20% of these centers survived the harassment by the IRS and the competition of other
