America Divided As of January 20, 2017 Donald Trump has been the president of the United States. Before Trump officially took office, about 44% of the American population believed that he would unite our country. Recently, the same poll was done and 28% of America’s population believes that Trump is uniting our country (Begley). That is a whole 16% decline of America’s population that believes Trump is uniting America. Donald Trump’s presidency has caused division amongst Americans due to events such as the NFL ban anthem protests and the Muslim ban. On October 23,2017 several football teams in the NFL (National Football League) decided to take a knee in attempts to show their right. Because of his irrational and irrelevant comments, many people have grown distant from America’s roots to the point where they don’t even care what he says anymore. An article on The Guardian talks about the causes that have led to the division of America today, the author writes, “Looking back to that moment, they were just words on paper because there has not been healing, no binding of the wounds from the campaign, no return to the American tradition in that sense” (Steele). Steele refers to the inaugural address that Trump gave when he first took office. In that article, Steele makes a conclusion that what Trump once said has not been fulfilled and that is the primary cause for the division in America today. As a leader of America, it is important that the leader fulfills what has been said but, Trump has done the inverse of that. Trump accomplished many things as president but his wrongs overrule all his rights.
