Before the arrival of Europeans, the indigenous Taino tribes ruled the island that would soon become known as Hispaniola. The island was founded by Christopher Columbus in his famous voyage of 1492, where he then claimed the newly founded area for Spain. This quickly set the path of conquest for the rest of the Caribbean islands and the original American colonies. After several exchanges of control from hands of the Spanish, French, and Haitians, the Dominican Republic finally became its own independent country in 1865. It then struggled with many years of severe rulers and dictatorships, causing civil war and many uprisings within the state. After receiving aid from the United States, the country was then able to establish its own Presidential dollar amount for the year of 2015. The country imports several different commodities including: foodstuffs, petroleum gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fabrics, and cotton. The Dominican relies heavily on the United States for many of its imported products, receiving nearly half of all these items from the US. The country’s four other top import trade partners would be: China, Venezuela, Trinidad, and Mexico (“The World Factbook: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC”). Their wide variety of prized products include: silver, gold, meats, consumer goods, sugar, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco. Once again, the United States is a very significant trade partner for the Dominican Republic, serving as 42.9% of their export industry. Along with the U.S., the neighboring country of Haiti serves as a major export partner, as well as Canada and India (“The World Factbook: DOMINICAN
After a recent recession that left the country in poor condition, the DR is quickly getting back up on its feet, increasing its GDP, import and export standing, and simply its overall economic quality. The country is quickly climbing the ranks, beginning to stand as one of the largest and most successful economies in Latin America. With the increase of tourism, trade, and communication in the developing country, the Dominican is continuing to grow at a very impressive rate and it seems that it will continue to do so in the years to
In 1499 I was the one to succeed Christopher Columbus , sent by king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Upon my arrival in the Colony of Santo Domingo on Hispaniola in August 1500, I upheld accusations of mismanagement made by Columbus, and had Columbus sent back to Spain in chains.

In the beginning, Rafael Trujillo was a fruitful and beneficial leader to the country of the Dominican Republic. Trujillo reduced foreign debt and made the country more profitable, mainly because he was an excellent business man. However with this new prosperity, came the loss of the citizen's political liberties (1 “Rafael Trujillo”). Rafael Trujillo may have made the country more profitable, but he still was getting away with taking away innocent citizen’s political liberties.
On November 19, 1493 Ponce de Leon was one of the first Europeans to see the small island of Borinquen, the Indian name for Puerto Rico. Ponce de Leon sailed to Puerto Rico in 1506 with two hundred men to the island and found out that it had rich gold deposits. He enslaved the natives, and forced them to mine gold for him. Ponce de Leon left Puerto Rico and returned again in 1508 this time he brought with him only fifty men. On this voyage his ship went through a terrible storm that caused him to run onto the rocks on two occasions. The crew was forced to throw over much of their supplies in order to keep the ship from sinking. After Ponce de Leon finally arrived in Puerto Rico he became the governor of the island. This caused him to become very wealthy, and the most powerful man on the island, who only received orders from the kind himself!

During Gregory’s ethnographic research in the Dominican Republic, he encounters many individuals, some tourists, others expatriates, as well as citizens native to the island. One individual by the name of Minaya, discusses changes in the sugar cane industry. In 1988 he became a worker at a sugar mill that his uncle owned, but claimed that the industry became “Capitalized” (Gregory 2007: 15). He explains this capitalization as the industry being leased out to private corporations, which incurred poor working conditions and minimal wages upon the laborers. Minaya also expresses the fact he has no formal education, a big factor...
Today I bring to your forefront of thought, the island of Hispaniola. This island is the namesake for the two countries who run the land, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Both nations hail from a joint introduction into the world market and post-European colonization, but as time progressed, each one had a different outlook to the world stage. The present day Dominican Republic and Haiti are worlds apart on an island which keeps them together. Their culture is separated by the colonial residuals that lay imbedded into their communities. They are on different sides of the spectrum of structural growth due to the resulting outcomes from decades of political ruling and policy making. In fact, U.S. exporters sold more goods to Canada in 2003 than they did to the European Union.
The Dominican Republic is a nation located in the Caribbean Sea and shares the land with Haiti, and the whole island is called Hispaniola as it was named when Christopher Columbus discovered it during his first voyage in the year 1492. The country has proved to be one of the leading Caribbean countries with accessible healthcare to its citizens and even expats. However, the country has a multinational population with low-to-medium incomes and multi-level access to healthcare based on income. Despite this, improvements to healthcare system can lead to better medical outcomes to all the citizens and even to the suffering citizens of the Haiti. Because the Dominican Republic is an immediate neighbor to struggling Haiti, it is the moral obligation of the Dominican to provide Haitians with access to healthcare.
