Why do victims identify with this wheel? The victims fall on the traps of power and control abuse caused by “physical violation, treats or intimidation.” Domestic violence encompasses the abuse of control and power over the other (whether among known or unknown individuals). It can be “sexual, physical or emotional.” Victims may be trapped on some of the following circumstances of abuse: “name-calling;” isolating one from friends or family members; withholding money; staying at home instead of working; physical treats or abuse (hitting, slapping, pushing, others); sexual abuse; inciting pressure or fear out of behavior or foul language; and many other ways. Some of the consequences that victims may suffer are the following: fear of being alone in the house; low self-esteem; depression; suicide; emotional problems; drug abuse; social withdrawal (“Power and Control Wheel,” 2015).

Victims usually handle these stressful circumstances all by themselves and may not consult others for advice due to the sensitivity of the matter or fear of judgment. Because violence or abuse occurs in a recurring manner, there will be episodes of forgiveness and reconciliation, which may prevent victims from seeking further help for each lapse of abuse. The wheel of power and control abuse occurs in recurring episodes. The violence can be passed down from parents to children or through relationships between partners (“Power and Control Wheel,” 2015). Patterns of abuse can be assessed and analyzed, especially in coordinating “batterer intervention programs.” The wheel can also be used in providing explanations on why a certain victim may opt to return to an “abusive spouse” or some reasons why the victim does not fully cooperate during the process of “criminal prosecution” (“Wheel Gallery,”
