What causes domestic violence? - Lifestyle determinants
A person’s lifestyle largely influences their health. Their lifestyle includes an individual’s daily choices and behaviours, and these can be influenced by other people. Negative lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet and so on, can lead to poor mental or physical health. Positive changes to personal behaviour can reduce the risks of health issues.
Substance abuse not only affects a person’s physical health, it can also affect their behaviour and actions. Those that abuse substances are less likely to control their behaviour and are more likely to result in violent impulses, become easily agitated, and have less thought before their actions. Alcohol or drug abuse can be caused by many factors, and is often a means of escape. A common thought is that substance abuse is a major cause for domestic violence, as the intake of alcohol is linked to the increase in a loss of behaviour. Although domestic violence is the exertion of power and control over another, and not the loss of behaviour, the impact of alcohol or drugs can worsen the severity of the abuse. Therefore the relationship between substance abuse and domestic violence is not one that causes the act, but rather amplifies the effects.
