Domestic Homicide Domestic Homicide is the killing of one person by another within the household. Many cases of domestic homicide take place each year. A third of all murders are committed by women. There is also a forty-one percent chance that a woman was the murderer in a spouse murder trial (Dawson 1). Women should have their cases taken seriously and not with sympathy just because they are smaller and weaker than their counterpart. There are Laws and Protection Orders provided throughout the United States, so women should not have to deal with any type of violence or abuse. If they aren’t treated with violence, then there shouldn’t be any reason for women to try to kill their abusive husband. Women should be tried for murder of their abusive husband just like any other person that has committed murder in America. In, “Domestic Violence, Law Enforcement, and Court Responses to Domestic Violence” from Child Abuse and Domestic Violence, Doak proves that there are many opportunities for women to get away from Domestic Violence. Doak starts by telling of arrests made because of domestic violence then shows some tables with statistics. She follows that by presenting some cases containing domestic violence, and continues with laws passed to help families that are victims of domestic violence. Doak finishes the chapter with help that is offered to abusive males and gives some statistics pertaining to the rates of drop out and the chances of the men abusing others again. Doak’s goal was to present the reader with facts in order to show ways for domestic abuse and homicides to be avoided and what happens to men after they have been arrested. During the 1980s and 1900s, domestic violence was one of the most unreported crimes that involve females and males getting hurt and dying. Kicking, choking, killing, and saying brutal or despise words that could hurt the victims physically or emotionally are considered domestic violence. In fact, many victims are afraid to seek for help. According to “The Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC), women account for approximately 85 percent of all intimate partner violence, with women aged 20-24 at greater risk” (Batten, par.16). Most pregnant women are at risk as well. “But underlying approach is still one that assumes the perpetrators are men and the victims are woman” (Haugen, par. 1). Moreover, both males and females believe that domestic violence is a solution to their issues.
The phrase “domestic violence” typically refers to violence between adult intimate partners. It has been estimated that every year there are about 3.3 to 10 million children exposed to domestic violence in the confines of their own home (Moylan, Herrenkohl, Sousa et al. 2009). According to research conducted by John W. Fantuzzo and Wanda K. Mohr(1999): “[e]xposure to domestic violence can include watching or hearing the violent events, direct involvement (for example, trying to intervene or calling the police), or experiencing the aftermath (for example, seeing bruises or observing maternal depression)” (Fantuzzo & Mohr, 22). The effects of exposure can vary from direct effects such as behavioral and developmental issues to interpersonal relationships, all of which lead to detrimental prospects on the child’s development. This paper will explore those effects and how it affects children.
Domestic violence, we all hear about it, in fact over 6 million kids witness domestic violence annually. Many people believe that domestic violence isn’t a huge issue but it has major effects that can result in physical injury, physiological trauma, and sometimes death. Annually, 37 billion dollars are the health costs of domestic violence, 37 billion dollars that could be put to better use. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime, therefore community programs, education and intervention, increased censorship in television, and harsher penalties as well as easy accessible help needs to be a focus throughout high schools as well as throughout the mid-twenties.
Thesis: In my paper, I will be examining the different types, possible causes, and effects of Intimate Partner Violence, and what treatments or programs are available to combat this growing problem in America. Regardless of differing approaches to fight it, statistics show that women all across the world suffer from the effects of domestic violence at a similar rate independent of class, race, or religion.

The abuser of domestic violence, controls and tortures the victim of threats, intimidation, and physical violence. Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of violence in America. The abusers are not only men, women can be abusers as well. Women make up the vast majority of domestic violence. According to the American Bar Association (ABA), 90-95% of domestic violence victims are females and 70% of intimidating homicides are females. Domestic violence is a serious crime and everyone needs to be aware of its effects. This essay presents and explains the evidence supporting the major risk factors for intimate partner homicides.
“Domestic violence is a violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault, or fear of physical harm” (Stewart & Croudep, 1998-2012). In most places, domestic violence is looked at as one of the higher priorities when trying to stop crime. Domestic violence cases are thought to be influenced by the use of alcohol, drugs, stress or anger, but in reality, they are just learned behaviors by the batterer.
