The Evolution of The Cat
Today’s domestic house cats sure have changed and traveled far from their old wildcat ancestors across the world. Cats have traveled halfway across the world and now live around the world in various breeds and sizes. Even though they live today in their domesticated form they still retain some of the traits that their ancestors bestowed upon them. The African wildcat is believed to be the ancestor of all domestic cats, and they’re even still alive to this day. Over thousands of years of speciation, domestic house cats came to be from these wildcat ancestors.
Cat’s have inherited much from their entire family over the period of thousands of years. They got most of their notable features from their cat ancestors. Domestic

cats still retain their hunting adaptations from their family, like good vision in the dark, retractable claws, and they also have a compact and flexible body so that they have an easier time moving around. They lost some traits over time though, they no longer have the ability to roar because the bones in their throat have gotten too rigid, this is one of the major differences from domestic cats and wildcats. Old habits still remain though, and domestic cats still maintain a sleeping schedule as if they were still wildcats. Cats are known to sleep a total ⅔ of their life! Cats sure have changed from their wildcat ancestors, but they still are useful cats. Domestic cats belong to the youngest genus of the feline family known to this date.
The Felis genus of cats is the youngest known genus of the cat family and most domestic cats have derived from this genus. The most accepted ancestor of today’s modern domestic cats are the African Wildcat which is believed to have branched off and made the lineage of domestic cats about 70,000 to 100,000 years ago. The African wildcat was a hunting animal and gave all of its descendants their hunting traits. Today since domestic cats and small felines barely use these traits however, they have more or less become unfunctional or have been turned into weakened versions.
It all started when that land bridge between Canada and Western Europe still existed. African wildcats slowly migrated to the west along with other small wildcats like the Eastern European wildcat and many others. Over time they were domesticated by the natives and slowly lost their need for their hunting adaptations since they were constantly fed by their owners. Over the thousands of years wildcats slowly just became today's modern domestic cat, but they still retain some of their traits from over the years.
Domestic cats have traveled a long way from their original habitat and now live all around the world. The African wildcat gave America domestic cats and if it would’ve never come here we probably wouldn’t have known what a cat was for a couple more hundred years. Today domestic cats live all around the world, and they all still exhibit traits from their wildcat
ancestors.

Saber Tooth Cats lived during the Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, existing for about 42 million years, from the Eocene Epoch to the end of the Pleistocene Epoch. They roamed the earth during the early to late Pleistocene era (1.6 to 10,000 years ago) along with other animals such as mammoths and mastodons, however fossils of other
For many cat owners, their cat’s impulse to scratch can become a disastrous problem. Cat owners believe that the only logical solution is to have the cat declawed. It’s natural for cats to scratch and use their our claws to live their daily lives. Cats use their claws to play, climb, and in many situations as a form of self-defense. So the question that presents itself, is it really necessary for cat owners to have cats declawed. The only problem with declawing cats is that it is unnecessary and inhumane mutilation. Many cat owners should be more aware take advantage of the other safer and more humane alternatives for their cats.
If this species were given enrichment, they will live longer and have a healthy life. Another method to enrich these cats is give them the place to hide out. They love to hide, play and explore. It’s part of their predatory when hunting, stalking, killing, and consuming the prey. Design activities that provides that stimuli such as high shelves. They love to jump high. They are very active creatures. Give them items to mark their territory like small pieces of tree trunk or branches to set the environment for the Savannah’s. These environmental enrichment may reduce the severity of bad behavior. Savannah cats love sunny areas, if apply a sun room for them is very good with added bird and squirrel feeder that is set up to let the cat watch. Doing so does not cause arousal and frustration. Giving this species have time roaming outside will give them the ability to discover and explore as a cat. It won’t make them bored at all. They have more of the wild features than a house cat. Providing another pet when they are a kitten can give them social interaction can help with the stimuli, also with people’s
Commonly referred to as the African serval or serval cats, the species Leptailurus serval is a medium sized feline native to the continent of Africa. Although it is widley spread throughout subsaharran, they have become extinct in some locations due to human predation. These elegant creatures are known for its remarkable resemblance of a cheetah with a beautiful fur coat that has spotted markings and long thing legs. Another distinguishable feature of the serval are its large round ears that face forward on top of their heads. These features help the serval hunt for prey giving it a relatively high success rate of about 50%.
The Oncilla, also known as the little spotted cat or little tiger cat, is one of the smallest wild cat species in the Americas. The scientific name of the Oncilla is Leopardus tigrinus (Petersen). I chose the Oncilla because I saw a picture of it and I thought it was appealing. The fur and eyes are what caught my eye when I saw the picture. I thought the Oncilla was interesting because it looks like a domestic cat but it is not. Thee Oncilla is really small and it has big eyes which made it look really adorable. I found out that the Oncilla is a relative to the Ocelot and Margay, which I thought was interesting. The Oncilla is venerable to extinction because the biggest threat to the animal is man. Humans capture the Oncilla then usually sell them as pets.
Although cats and dogs are both animals they are different in many ways from, showing love, grooming, vaccinations, food, and vet care. To me dogs are more loveable than cats. However, cats are cheaper when it comes to grooming, vaccinations, and food. Owners treat and take care of their dogs better than their cats. I have always been more of a dog person even though they are expensive.
We first need to look at the predatory behaviors that occur in cats when local birds are apparent in their area. An experiment done by Peter Blancher tested the number of birds killed by house cats. Blancher set up his experiment so that house cats got a chance to hunt at least once a day. After the experiment, he concluded that house cats are responsible for 100-350 million deaths per year in Canada alone (Blancher, Peter Avian Conservation Ecology ,N.p. 2013. Web. 19 Mar, 2014). The experiment showed that house cats have predatory instincts and behaviors despite being inside a house for most of their lives. The behavior occurs when a cat sees or even hears a bird or other prey; cat’s poses these behaviors despite being an indoor or outdoor cat.

A soft purr, a gentle paw. A pet cat is a luxury that humans have indulged in for thousands of years, from their beginnings in Africa and the Middle East, all the way to homes here in 2014. Cats rival dogs as the most common pet in the United States, with 30.4% of houses owning 2.1 cats each (“U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics”).While working cats, such as farm cats, barn cats, and other rural, semi-feral animals may be kept for specific purposes of keeping pest animals at bay, the vast majority of kept cats in the US are pet cats, kept in homes for companionship and affection. Cat owners want the best for their pets, and as such is important to keep pet cat indoors, for their own safety as well as the safety of the local wildlife.
Tigers are the largest members of the cat family. They live in Asia and belong to the same genus as the lion, leopard, and jaguar. Two major subspecies of the tiger are the Siberian tiger and the Bengal tiger. The tiger is thought to have originated in northern Asia during the Pleistocene Epoch.
Domestication of the common horse is believed to have started around 4000 BC, becoming common during the early 3000 BC (Wilson,. Mammal Species of the World (3rd ed.). Baltimore).
Full grown cat’s diet is more affordable. A cat can eat constant dry, hard food because its teeth and jaw are strong enough. The food required for a cat is supposed to be low in calories to prevent obesity. A cat’s diet also requires a constant supply of water to prevent dehydration. The body absorbs the water awfully fast. Cats are carnivores. The full grown cat hunts down and eats any pests in the house that bothers them. If an outside/inside, while outside they may provide their own food supply; replacing the hard, dry food with birds or
I have a love for cats. Ever since I was a teenager I always wished for a cat of my own. When I moved in a three story apartment in California, the Manager of the complex said that cats were allowed in the units. I mentioned to my Aunt at the time that I was searching in the newspapers under advertisements for cats wanted. One cool breezy evening, my Aunt called me and said that a friend of her's named Judy had a cat named Katie who did not get along with her other two cats. So I agreed to meet with Judy to see if I'd love to adopt Katie.
There are many reasons to get a pet. You could choose to get a pet for a companion, or simply to add to your family. Many older folk choose to get a pet after they retire or lose their spouse so they do not feel lonely. Many young couples choose to get a pet before they opt to have children, and many families add a pet to their home for their children. The question is though, what type of pet to get? Do you get a cat, or a dog? Having a dog as a pet over a cat is much more enjoyable and beneficial to your life, specifically because of their behavior, convenience, and loyalty.
