“An Impossible Geography”
What is religion? To some “it is the belief and the worships of a superhuman controlling power, especially a God or gods. The Jewish religion and the Muslim religion are two of the most important religions in our society today. Each of the important religions of today began during trying times in the world. Not unlike the other religions, the Jewish religion and the Muslim religion and its followers have had their struggles from its beginning. One of the struggles of these two has to do with politics and a struggle for power. For the Jews and Muslims this struggle and strife began in their homeland of Jerusalem. This struggle for political

control has led to what is deemed, “An Impossible Geography.” The city of Jerusalem is especially holy to the Jews because it is the location of the Temple, their center of worship in ancient times. The First Temple was built during the reign of King Solomon. Solomon was the son of King David, a famous and favorite king of the Jews according to the Bible. David instructed his son, Solomon, that the Lord wanted a temple to be built and if the temple is built and you obey the Lord’s commandments and will, then you will prosper and the Lord will be with you. David commanded all of the leaders at that time to help with building this temple. When David died Solomon commanded that the First Temple be built. The First Temple was built around 966 B.C.
It was built on what was known as, Mount Moriah, where King David built a portable tabernacle and met with God. The Temple was built of the best materials that could be found. There were thousands of laborers who worked on the temple. The temple was five stories high, the walls were lined with cedar and overlaid with gold. The Temple included carvings of cherubs, palm trees and open flowers. Legend says that there was never any noise coming from the building because no hammers or tools were used on the stones that the outside of the Temple was made with. The Temple when completed was the most beautiful place. It was dedicated to Solomon, King of Israel, because of his leadership and because of Solomon following God’s word. It was a refuge for strangers, it had no idols, it was the ear of God and it was the house of prayer for all people. Sacrifice was the predominant mode of divine service during this …show more content…
time. About four hundred years later, the temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. A Second Temple was built on the very same site around 586 B.C. The Persian Empire, led by Cyrus the Great, gained control of Jerusalem in 614 B.C. and the Jews were allowed to build a Second Temple in 516 B.C. Cyrus authorized the building of the Second Temple. This temple was not as elaborate as the First Temple built by Solomon. The elders who remained during this time and had seen the First Temple were not as pleased with the Second Temple. The Second Temple was built in about three years. The new temple was not the same. The Ark of the Covenant was missing. This was a very important part of the Jewish tradition. Also strong leadership was lacking during this time. Strong leadership was needed for the community of Jewish people and within the Jewish religion. Ezra came to help fill the void but through his efforts things still did not return to where they were for the Jews before the First Temple was destroyed. In A.D. 70, the Romans invaded the area, sieged Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple leaving only a small portion of the restraining wall which remains and is called, “The Wailing Wall.” The Jews had lost control of their precious center of worship, Jerusalem. In 691 A.D., Muslims claimed this area and built a shrine called the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount. This became the Muslims’ holy area. The Dome of the Rock is said to get its name from the fact that it is built over the highest part of Mount Moriah where Abraham, a Jew, was preparing to sacrifice his son Isaac to God. The Dome of the Rock is a part of what is known as the Noble Sanctuary or Al-Haram al-Sharif.
After taking control of Jerusalem, Islamic leaders decided to have the Dome of the Rock built in 685 A.D. It took about seven years to complete. Like the Jews, First Temple, the Dome of the Rock has a legend. The legend says that the Dome of the Rock was built because Prophet Muhammad was taken to Mount Moriah by the angel, Gabriel and from there Muhammad ascended into heaven and met all the prophets that had preceded him, as well as seeing God sitting on his throne surrounded by angels. This “Night Journey” from Mecca by Muhammad is mentioned briefly in the Qur’an, the holy book of the Muslim
religion. The Dome of the Rock is said to be one of Islam’s oldest piece of architecture. The dome was built in an octagonal shape that is mounted on an elevated drum of 16 piers and columns. It is made of marble and mosaics. Many builders and artisans were brought in to help with construction of the Dome of the Rock. The inside of the dome is circular and the outside is made of gold. The different builders and artisans were able to incorporate their styles in the parts of the dome they worked on. The First and Second Temple and the Dome of the Rock play a significant role in the lives of Jewish and Muslims both. Both sets of people have a history in this piece of geography. With this historical and religious part of the lives of Jews and Muslims a dilemma arrives. Jews are still taught that Jerusalem was the center of their religion. They worship through the stories taught about Abraham and his sacrifice of his son, Isaac, King David and his son King Solomon who was instructed by his father to build the Temple. The God they worship, the God who kept these people and led them to where they are today is worshipped. All they have left of this special symbol of their religious beliefs is a portion of a wall. Religion includes symbols and the remaining wall is a symbol of the power of their religion. The “Wailing Wall” is for those still living in the Middle East a true part of their religion that they should have a right to have access to. The Muslims regard this piece of geography as a holy spot because of its historical and religious beginning. It was known as the “farthest mosque” where at one time the Muslims faced in prayer. The mosque al-Aqsa is very near the Dome of the Rock, making this area a special place of worship for the Muslims. There has been conflict between the Jews and the Muslims over this historical and religious site. They both felt they should have the right to worship in Jerusalem. The Muslims allowed Jews and Christians to come and visit the Western Wall or “Wailing Wall” once a year for a time. During the Six Day War in 1967, Israel captured Jerusalem and the Jews now were allowed to worship in Jerusalem. But that would block out the Muslims. Their right to worship at this sacred place has been taken over. Israel does give Muslims access to the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of Palestinian guards. So with the political struggle of ownership, these two religions are caught between a rock and a hard place. This one small piece of geography that has changed hands several times is caught in a struggle for peace in the Middle East. Neither side and religion wants to give up control of Jerusalem so no one is content.
The Hagia Sophia was constructed first and it was meant as the main church of the Byzantine Empire. It is said that they built the Hagia Sophia in only 5 years, while it took nearly a century for the Notre Dame cathedral to be completed. While it did have what some would consider an extremely short construction time, they did have many issues with the dome. It nearly collapsed more than a few times. Once the builders and architects figured a plan to keep it stable, one on looker said, ”it is as if the Dome is suspended from Heaven itself”. The Dome of the rock was constructed for Christians, Jews, and Muslims but was to attract new followers to Malik’s Islamic brotherhood. The project for the construction had many issues, not only with the Dome itself, but also with revolts that would postpone construction for years. Once completed, many followers believed that Jerusalem was the third holiest place in the world due to Muhammed’s journey to Heaven in order to talk to God. The art within the Hagia Sophia was beautiful Mosaics and paintings of the Virgin Mary with Jesus. These were meant to represent how holy the building was. When the Muslims claimed the Hagia Sophia they did not want to destroy it due to beliefs so they renovated the building. They did this by breaking down images of humans and animals due to their belief that no images of figures
Religion has been a major focal point in any society and in any culture. Starting from the first civilizations in Sumer and Ur to the vast metropolitans of today like New York and London, religion has been around and played a key part in lives of people. Possibly two of the oldest religions in the world, Judaism and Zoroastrinism share distinct qualities that are still alive today. Both religions are practiced but Zoroastrianism is not as popular as it once was. Meanwhile, Judaism is one of the world’s largest religions. These two religions are similar in the way that they are designed and practiced throughout history.
Different religions have shaped the cultural landscapes throughout history. In most religions, they have what is known as a sacred site. Many of the sacred sites are near the founding of the religion or near a place where something significant had once occurred. The followers of these religions often build temples to worship their gods. One example, would be the Dome of the Rock, where Muhammad, a prophet of God in the Muslim culture, said to have ascended into heaven. The Dome of the Rock is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and is the "Noble Sanctuary" by Muslims. The place of worship for Muslims is known as the mosque, but the Dome of the Rock is much more iconic and would be best identified as a Muslim shrine. The temple was originally made for pilgrims and took thirteen years to construct. This is also a significant place for the Muslim community
For Jews, it is the supposed Jewish site of the near sacrifice of Isaac, which the third image aids in visualizing. The Akedah, or"Binding of Isaac", is the account in the book of Genesis (22: 1-19)of Abraham, at the command of God, taking his son, Isaac, to be offered as a sacrifice in the land of Moriah. Abraham binds his son (hence "the Binding of Isaac") to the altar and is ready to perform the dreadful deed when an angel appears to tell him to stay his hand and to promise him that his seed will increase. This story is the reason that Mount Moriah, or the location of the Dome of the Rock, has retained its Jewish spiritual magnitude through the years. There are two reasons that Jews believe the Dome of the Rock to be the location of the sacrifice of Isaac: a)The sacrifice of ...
King David secured the beginnings of a prosperous Israelite empire; he made Jerusalem its capital and brought the Ark of the Covenant there with the hopes of building the First Great Temple for his people. However, it would be his son, King Solomon who would be the one to accomplish this. The Great Temple housed the Ark of the Covenant and also had places to make offerings. Having been nomadic, this temple finally gave the Israelites a stabile place to worship. In fact, the text World Religions by Mary Pat Fisher says that the Israelites looked at this Great Temple as “a central stationary place where God would be most present to them” (Fisher 250). This Temple was a beacon of hope and a place to go where they knew that they would be closer to God.
Religion, “part of the human experience that has to do with a god or gods, a higher power, or the ultimate values of life” (Cason & Tillman 6-7), is one of the most controversial and interesting subjects for humanity. It has been around for as long as anyone can recall and they have difference and similarities in their founders, beliefs, and history. Religion has served to give some sort of a meaning to life and everything around it. In modern society, some religions have grown and expanded significantly. These larger religions have been classified as world religions. In addition, these world religions have been split into two categories known as Eastern and Western religion.
Religion is an ever-growing idea that has no set date of origin. Throughout history religion has served as an answer to the questions that man could not resolve. The word religion is derived from the Latin word “religio” meaning restraint in collaboration with the Greek word “relegere” which means to repeat or to read again. Religion is currently defined as an organized system of beliefs and practices revolving around, or leading to, a transcendent spiritual experience. Throughout time, there has yet to be a culture that lacks a religion of some form, whether it is a branch of paganism, a mythological based religion or mono/polytheistic religion. Many religions have been forgotten due to the fact that they were ethnic religions and globalizing religions were fighting to be recognized, annihilating these ancient and ethnic religions. Some of these faiths include: Finnish Paganism, Atenism, Minoan Religion, Mithraism, Manichaeism, Vedism, Zoroastrianism, Asatru, and the Olmec Religion. Religion is an imperative part of our contemporary world but mod...
Religion is “the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or any such system of belief and worship.” (Cambridge Dictionary) Many people believe in something else out of the evidential or scientific view, thinking that good things happen because God says so, or that the universe was not made by the Big Bang. Even though is something that was more present in history years ago, a lot of people still believe and practise a religion. According to Stephen Juan there are about 4,300 religions in the world. About a 75 per cent of the population of the world practises a religion and the two religions most widely spread are the Christianity and the Islam. (2006) They can be divided in believers, adherents or not adherents, agnostics and atheists. People who are believers are the ones who have faith in something great beyond and
Monuments such as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and San Vitale in Ravenna, perform a great importance in Byzantine and Islamic architecture. Both of these structures did not exclusively represent the main place of worship, but most importantly as a symbol of achievement and growth within the current times of construction. Starting in 524, under the influence of Orthodox bishop Ecclesius, the development of San Vitale was to represent the achievements of the emperor Justinian. Julius Argentarius was the sponsor for this structure and it was dedicated by Bishop Maximian in 547. The Dome of the Rock is built on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in 692 with the help of Abd al-Malik with the suspected intention to symbolize Islams influence in Jerusalem and its involvement in a highly Jewish and Christian supremacy. Although separated by over 100 yrs, both of these domes share multiple similarity's including a projected confidence of their originating culture.
The definition of religion changes all throughout the world. A neighbor, a coworker, a traveler, a student studying abroad would provide all sorts of different views and opinions on what religion means to them. It can be difficult at times to relate to other religions and provide factual information that has no bias and fully demonstrates the religion but it is important to find a common ground between factual and bias to create a better perception of what religion has to offer others. When narrowing in on three certain religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, there are similarities in beliefs or doctrines but they may symbolize for completely different things.
Religion is defined as the belief in or worship of a controlling power and or a God. A similarity between Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity is each has an individual leader, God, or gods that are worshiped. In Islamic religion the God is
Religion itself can mean many different things and is interpreted differently by each group of people. The literal meaning of the word “religion” is “a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects.” Religion is divided into different secs such as Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. Although religion is aimed to unite people and bring them together, I believe there are certain aspects that divide people or make them “different” from everyone else. The factors that have caused religion to divide are war and violence, the caste system, and rituals.
Religion is the one element of life that has connected the races and societies of the world for hundreds of years. It has given meaning to lives that may seem otherwise hopeless. Religion has provided for a universal language and culture among those who believe in a higher power. The spirit or being receiving the worship and praise may not be the same, but the practices are usually similar and serve the same purpose--to give direction, insight, courage, and a divine connection.
The definition of religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods(Merriam-Webster). After this semester I have come to realize that religion is a much more advanced, complicated, and personal definition. Religion can’t be defined in one word or one term because there is a lot that religion entails. There really is no concrete answer of what religion is and the definition varies among different groups of people and individuals.
Religion is a form of practicing spirituality, it is a way to connect or communicate with their supreme being. It also influences individuals to perceive life, nature, ethics, or themselves in a different form, that way is my perspective of what religion is. Throughout this semester, we have learned about the major religions and other religions that are not so common. I have also gained more knowledge about not just the religion that I practice, Catholicism, but about other religions, beside own. By learning more about other religions and understanding the way they perceive society, nature, and how they function, it has changed the way I perceive religion.
