French business practices are very formal in all aspects. French business wear is similar to that of America; however French business clothing differs slightly for women. Communication with the French is similar to communicating with any other foreign country. When traveling to France, there are some things to keep in mind regarding safety of business women. However there are no actual restrictions on dress for anyone in France. Nudity is not frowned upon by the French culture as many women go topless at the beaches, but the majority of the population dresses in a conservative manner. In France, women play a prominent role in the family and are treated as equals to men. The minor variations of treatment of women depend on the economic and social statuses of the person at hand. Women have the full freedom of choice as well as an equal status. Women are entitled to the same education and employment opportunities as men in the French Culture. However, French women often find it tougher to get jobs than French men. French women earn approximately twenty-five percent less than men due to low wage sectors. Women in France typically do not have formal managerial titles or own businesses unless related to fashion or other feminine products. After learning some basic phrases, it would be helpful to purchase a translation dictionary such as a Rosetta Stone. By having a translating dictionary, travelers will be able to communicate in any given situation. Not only will one have to communicate with those at the business meeting, but may also need to get information from people outside of the meeting such as directions or when purchasing souvenir items. Another solution to avoiding communication barriers would be to have a translator on hand for business meetings in foreign countries. However it is still important to know some French phrases as the translator will most likely not be with you outside of the meeting. Also before traveling to foreign counties, it is recommended to do your own research regarding customs of the country at hand.
