For this assignment I decided to follow around my neighbor, Marie Yaeger. I decided to follow her around because I enjoy being around her. She’s funny, interesting, and very nice. She also volunteers for multiple animal rescues as a transport driver. Some of them include: Martha’s Mutt Movers, The Liberty Train, American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue, and Hartman’s Haven Rescue. I have an interest in animals and hope to work with them someday.
I didn’t get the opportunity to go on an actual dog transport due to liability issues but I got an exact description of the process. First you get an email at the beginning of the week to sign up to drive. The email lists the dogs and their descriptions, the route which is broken down into hour segments, and the rescues involved. Volunteers sign up for the exact leg they want to drive. Once the transport is filled, usually filled by Friday evening, a final runsheet is sent to the volunteers that signed up. The information included on the run sheet are volunteer’s names, vehicle information, and contact information so volunteers can recognize each other. “It’s amazing to be how many people are willing to give up a few hours on a weekend to help dogs find new homes.”

At each hand off point each transport must call the monitor and confirm hand off was successful. “Sometimes hand offs are tricky because the dogs aren’t used to being in the car and they’re nervous.” After every hand off the volunteers would receive an email saying that the hand off was successful and the stage of the transport. Also, if there was any complications with the dog that would also be included. This is a two day process. The dogs paperwork from vets, etc, are included as required by law. The dogs are all pulled from shelters by rescue organizations and are sent far and wide across the nation the other rescues with potential
Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. Although Faye thinks her job is stressful, she thinks it’s easy because she enjoys doing her job and helping animals find a home.
Animal rescue, especially, has been a large part of my identity. Continually since birth, my family has been members of the League for Animal Welfare (LFAW), a no-kill shelter dedicated towards rehoming previously displaced animals. It became custom for me to visit the shelter
According to the ADA, dogs are the only kind of service animal. These dogs are especially trained to help
“It depends on where people work usually, but the workers come in and check the pets that are in hospital that need additional care. Then in some way, workers have checklists for each hospitalized pet, so if they need medications, bandage changes, etc, workers can then keep track easier. Then workers go on to do medication for any animals that are boarding with the clinic in kennels. After that they check in pets that are coming for surgery or for a drop off exam/treatment.... ... middle of paper ...

In the early 1940’s Marie was born into a small tight knit family living in a small rural Kentucky town. Marie is now in her seventies and has led a very interesting life traveling the country, raising four children, and shaping her chosen profession. Our interview sessions were conducted over a period of time, as Marie is very active and has little “free time” to spare.

Animal-assisted therapy is often confused with service dog; it is two completely different type of usage of animals, which usually are dogs. It is commonly misunderstood because animal-assisted therapy and service dog are working animals with individuals with disability although according to (Hart-Cohen, 2009) service dogs is when an individual with disability is in need of help in order to function in daily life such as answering the door, crossing the street and the list goes on. While animal-assisted therapy animals are trained to offer comfort companionship, and affection to those in need in different situations such as courtrooms, nursing homes, schools, hospitals, and other places (Hart-Cohen, 2009). The point of animal-assisted therapy is to be available in specific situations to offer comfort to individuals. In order to become an assisted animal, the animal must undergo training, to receive a certified to prove that the animal is qualified to be able to control his or her behavior and is able to work with an...
While working on the audio documentary I found that many different elements that worked on this project and many didn’t work at all. When going into this assignment I wanted to pick something that I was passionate about and which I can give more information to my audience. Shelters and adoption are important to me and know that the Kalamazoo community loves animals as well. Choosing KCASE shelter was important because I felt that this shelter need more awareness and help from the community. When doing the interviews for this project it was difficult because the people of operation at KCASE didn’t want me to interview them. Gladly, my roommate is a volunteer at KCASE so she was like my inside man at the shelter. After, interviewing my roommate
They are non-profit, which means everything is donated through the community and fundraisers. I did a fundraiser this spring for them to complete my community service hours for high school. We got over seven hundred dollars in donations and a van full of dog and cat food and supplies. Your support keeps these organizations afloat. It’s our civic responsibility to take care of the pets we have and to get them spayed and neutered to help keep the pet population

“You 'll make the jobs of everyone working for animals a little easier by lending a hand and spreading the message of responsible pet ownership and animal protection” (Top Reasons to Volunteer). Most of the time the new volunteers do not have the experience that the older volunteers have. If there is something that needs to be done and one of the volunteers do not know what to do next suggest to them that a certain chore needs taken care of. Also, if you see a dog got out or is being aggresive go and get the staff to help and ask for guidance. The animal and your safety is the most important
