The internet does help find knowledge and open the doors for good and easy information, but not all of the information you find or see is true information. It could be a mix of things and also the internet does not let you think for yourself, you search,find and move on to something else you're looking for. The web is not that safe but again its not that bad. When you are always on the computer almost seven days a week then you're kind of using it to much if you just use it like a few times a day for short periods you will be fine. From talking to people to playing games everyone is at some point on the internet for awhile. The internet is also making more and more kids lazy to want to stay inside and not want to eat dinner or go to the store with out the game, this is exactly how the internet is getting, just like a game council, it takes your mind off things to sit down and play for about ten mins and then half hour goes by you're still on it. Except the internet has this plus more which makes us want to be on it and don’t want to get off. It’s like when you're on the web your in your zone and nothing can take you out unless you got out of it yourself. I have been at my nephews house and he gets yelled at for not getting off of it because he does not listen to his mother and cares way too much about the computer. They also will be distracted in outside of school activities to, if the parent is trying to get them to do homework they will just not be interested in learning because they're so focused on having fun and playing that one game. I have a 2 year old nephew and whenever my sister sets her phone down,Damian instantly runs for it and unlocks it and plays music that she has because she has shown him how to use it now he thinks that he needs to always have it in his hands for music and music videos that she has. According to www.telegraph.co.uk, “[y]oung people aged between 16 and 24 spend more than 27 hours a week on the internet.” Certainly this much internet usage would have an effect on someone. What exactly is the effect of using the internet too much? Nicholas Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” argues that we are too reliant on the internet and it is making the us dim-witted and shortens our attention span. While Clive Thompson’s article “Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” states that technology is not only a collection of knowledge, it also a method of sharing and recording our own knowledge. I fall between both Carr and Thompson. I agree with car on his points of us being too reliant on the internet but disagree when he states that it is making us less intelligent. Meanwhile, I also support Thompson’s statement that the internet allows us to assimilate vast amounts of knowledge but disagree with his opinion on how we should be reliant on
Evidence by Subrahmanyam, Kraut, Greenfield, and Gross (2000) states “In this study, those who were lonely or depressed were not more drawn to the Internet. Rather, the HomeNet results suggest that using the Internet in itself caused the declines in social well-being” (p. 135). The conclusion of the studies provides supporting evidence that the internet will cause depression and loneliness, since depressed individuals were not already drawn to the internet. The isolation that comes with internet usage can too add to the less likelihood of face-to-face interaction. The more one is isolated the less contact of friends and family. Does the internet make us smarter or dumber is a question that has been asked more frequently, especially when referring to my generation. In Nicholas Carr’s article “Does the Internet Making Us Smarter or Dumber?” he adamantly believes that the internet is in fact making us dumber with its various distractions, hindering cognitive development, and affecting our knowledge retention. He supports his belief with studies such as the one conducted at a university where students were divided and only half were allowed to use their computers during class while the others were not (Carr,22) . The outcome showed that those who did not use the internet did better on the tests (22). After reading this article it made me ask the question myself and I believe that the internet is making me smarter in certain ways and dumber in others.
Nicholas Carr says, as our work and social lives come to center on the use of electronic media, the faster we’re able to navigate those media and more adroitly we’re able to shift our attention among online task, the more valuable we’re likely to become a employees, and even friends and colleagues. When using the Net most seem to lose focus on others and can seem disrespectful. The Internet has so much on it besides information that can be very distractful. Even in his essay he states that we can only "return to our own humble little personal minds" when we are "trapped for a moment without our internet link" (Wegner 389). Technology constantly pulls us out from reality that we can have personal time only when we take a break from technology. The "connections" through the cyberworld also discourages the development of personality. The use of social media creates stereotypes and people change themselves to look better on social media. The internet might not only be affecting social abilities, but also cognitive abilities. According to Descartes, what determines ones existence is cognition, and thinking is considered identity. His famous quote was not “I google therefore, I am.” An argument can be made about how creativity is being effected. The internet is not only a place where people find new friends, but also information. It is possible that we have access to too much information. The problem with the internet becoming the main source of information is that we depend on it for simple tasks which one could easily perform on their own with regular practice. The other problem is knowledge, people are looking to google where there is access to the same pool of knowledge rather than being creative and coming up with their own ideas and solutions.

Communicating online too much could hinder our ability to socialize effectively in the real life and interpersonal relationship. People in today’s generation love to communicate on the Internet. Due to the incredible convenience the Internet provides, people became socially dependent on it, therefore their time became preoccupied in front of the computer. Kids who grew up during the computer age show that they lack social skills. They would also feel uncomfortable and awkward when talking to people face to face. This is because they mostly isolate themselves in front of the computer chatting and meeting with people online. Due to lack of knowing other persons’ body cues, facial expression, miscommunication can occur. They are often unaware of the other member’s main idea and simply misinterpreting them.

Socialisation can be defined as the lifelong process in which one learns and recognises patterns of behaviour expected by society. The influences on socialisation are, who and what shape us into who we are, how we learn to fit and adapt to social norms in different situations. These influences include: relatives, blood relations including parents, grandparents and extended family who usually share values, culture and are relied on as first support for individuals. Peers are generally the same age and have similar interests.

The internet is full of many things that could make us smarter. However, the internet is full of websites, games, even photos that could very likely have a negative effect on children and their behaviors. Also their education, speech could become affected and they could start doing badly in school or start cursing at a young age. Another thing is that their attitude towards life changes, instead of seeing it as their own giant happy playground they can view it as a very bitter and cold place and start looking, feeling, and talking negatively.
