Does the average person in today’s society lack empathy? That is the question that shall be asked. Two experiments was conducted to answer this question. One experiment used a “VR”, virtual reality program, to see how people react to other people’s pain, for instance black and white (Beason). The other experiment took two different groups and scrutinized how people reacted to people that are living a rough life (Reynolds). The researchers that created the study suggest that the decline might be due to the rise in conceit among young people. They also say the cause of this decline is because of the use of technology and social media, a shrinking family size, and stronger pressures on young people to succeed academically and professionally. Research has shown that we feel more empathy for those that are similar to us or that are the same race as us. The statement about people not having empathy has came to the attention of President Barack Obama. President Barack Obama went so far as to claim in 2013 that the 'empathy deficiency' was more of problem than the federal deficiency (Reynolds). The thing is it’s that people don’t think we have this problem even though we do. People will just say,” I don’t feel empathy for others because I don’t know how.” Well one thing it is that maybe you will feel more empathy if you quit looking at a screen all day scientist has shown that this is the main reason why there is a lack of empathy. He found that strangers were much kinder to him than he had thought. Since the experiment, he has been able to empathise with blind people to a much greater degree (Reynolds). A kid was doing an experiment on the streets of New York. He as a homeless kid to see how it felt he did not eat anything that day. He sat beside a homeless man and the people gave the kid more money because he was younger than the man. The man was fine with it so he got up and got him a piece of pizza and a drink because he was able to empathise for the kid because he knew how it was like to be on the streets. The kid’s brother came over and told the man that he was not homeless and gave the man the money his brother man plus $200. The guys felt empathy for him because they use to be poor
