Can one be spiritual without being religious? Do religion and spirituality mean the same? It is a common question and concept asked by religious and spiritual people but is also one that is difficult to find a straight answer. Spirituality and religion are often intertwined but the two are not synonymous however both equally important. Religion and spirituality provides effective coping mechanisms and provides hope and meaning to life.
According to Judith A. Sigmund (2002), religion is system of faith with regards to humankind’s relation to a supreme being. This incorporates devotion and other practices which may include physical structures and other organizational procedures to encourage and maintain member cohesion. Spirituality is found within one’s self, a person who is spiritual is kind, loving, caring to people, animal and all things that matter in this world.
Spirituality in work place is important. Nurses respect patients and their cultural, religious and spiritual beliefs, show kindness, provide comfort and assurance in times of need among other things. Nurses also are often faced with dilemmas and make decisions that will affect patient care.
