Gentrification: Have you ever noticed a poor neighborhood changing rapidly? That’s gentrification happening right before your eyes. Gentrification is when the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in. In the book Pride, you will witness the main character Zuri, and her family witnessing gentrification changing their neighborhood. Gentrification is negative for communities because it can ruin the culture of a neighborhood. It also makes it hard for people already living in the community to keep up with living in a newly nice neighborhood because of the wealthier people moving in. Firstly, gentrification makes it less fortunate for people to find homes, and food, and to keep living in communities that people have lived in for years less liveable, which is bad for the communities. In the “Gentrification Article,” it states “Large increases in rents and home prices, increases in the number of evictions” (Green 2). In the text, it states, “Physical frailty makes it more challenging for elderly individuals to resist the actions that landlords take to remove tenants”. This goes to show that this can affect the elderly also. Lastly, generation is negative because it can cause indirect displacement. This happens when people in the neighborhood start to move out into different neighborhoods that are more affordable. Weather people move into their neighborhoods as they move out. While there is often a lot of movement in and out of rental housing in low-income neighborhoods, indirect displacement occurs when units being vacated by low-income residents are no longer affordable to other low-income
