Gatorade is one of many sports drinks that is out in the market. It was first made back in 1956 by a group of scientists in the University of Florida. The main reason Gatorade was made in the first place was to help the athletes of the university by replacing the body fluids that they lost during competitions especially in the hot weather of southern Florida. In a competition athletes lose water, carbohydrates and electrolytes through lots of sweating so Gatorade’s first priority was to replace them and re-energize the athletes. The first ever bottles of Gatorade that were created did not contain as much ingredients as todays Gatorades, and at first 10 players from the University’s Football team tested the drinks. It didn’t take long for the effects to show and the team quickly started to win their games. After the team’s results started to get better, Gatorade gained lots of attention from around the athletic community and after a few short years it was the official drink of the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, AVP, and the MLS. After all the l success, it was bought by Pepsi Company in 2001. This meant that it would no longer distribute its products to only the USA and Canada, but to the entire world and since then Gatorade products have been sent to almost 80 different countries. But the big question now, is that does it really help athletes? Was this the reason behind all the success of the Florida Gators through the 60’s?
Gatorade sponsors many different franchises, players and associations, so its advertisements are always seen by many, so when they promote that their drinks are better than water for athletes during games and matches; one has to wonder if it actually is? In a nutshell electrolytes are substances that are soluble in water and after being completely dissolved, they give ions. Our body consists of Cation and Anion electrolytes which are nutritionally referred to as Macrominerals. As stated before the balance level of electrolytes is every crucial for the human body, and if imbalanced the person can have serious and life threatening issues. But the only way to restore our electrolytes level is by consuming these sports drinks, so this is the main reason as for why even though the sports drinks have some negative aspects to them they are one of the cheapest and easiest ways a person can get the required electrolytes for their body.
It has long been established that both short and long-term exercise increase metabolic rate and heat production. This naturally predisposes participants to dehydration. Typical symptoms of dehydration include elevated temperature, fluid and electrolyte imbalance due to sweating, and loss of critical nutrients, such as glycogen (depleted via metabolic pathways). Many individuals participating in moderate to rigorous training schedules may engage in daily exercise, if not multiple exercise routines in one day (3,4,5,6). It then follows that the goal for these individuals should be avoidance of dehydration and maximization of rehydration through maintenance of electrolyte balance, replenishment of muscle glycogen, and plasma osmolality. Thus, examination of a fluid’s efficacy in these three areas is crucial. Through extensive research, it is evident that Gatorade will rehydrate faster and more effectively than water.
Through this evidence, Gatorade is the most essential drink on the planet when it comes to revitalizing and replenishing the body. This is why top athletes in professional sports endorse and use this produce. The commercial for Gatorade ask “Is it in you?” Gatorade and other numerous sports drinks have become a very important part of today’s sports market, and it seems to be with good reason. Research has confirmed that for the most part, the claims made by companies such as Gatorade about the effectiveness of their sports drinks are true. Gatorade is a useful sports drink.
The logos is the evidence. An advertisement using logos will give you the evidence and statistics you need to fully understand what the product does. At the bottom of the ad it says “three championships”, “one mvp award”, and “1845 bottles of vitamin water”. It also says “try it…it works for Kobe”. The advertisement is saying that Vitaminwater will work for anyone. They are saying if you want to be a champion one will become one by drinking
To find the answer we performed an experiment. We decided to put the drinks to the test by exercising, and then seeing how well we shoot 10 free throws. But after we exercised we drank either Powerade or Gatorade. We would then collect data, analyze it, and ultimately find out which drink is more effective. When I finished working out on Day 1, I drank Gatorade. I made 8/10. On Day 2, I drank Powerade after exercising and shot 7/10. And since the results were very similar I decided I would exercise and shoot 10 more on Day 3. But instead of drinking a sports drink I just drank water. I made 7/10. This data was very interesting. It shows Gatorade improved performance more, but nothing really stood out. So unless you plan on running a marathon or other strenuous athletic tasks, it will not really matter if you drink Powerade or Gatorade. And the background music is very motivating and in the video the beat of the music is in the right spot. At the end of the advertisement they show that Gatorade was part of victory. we realize that aside from the directive to change from drinking water as a source of rehydration to Gatorade, that the commercial targets factors like race and gender. The ad suggests that the only way you can evolve is with Gatorade in your system.
Invoking feelings and bits of emotions like advertisement do, causes viewers to feel more connected to whatever is being advertised or presented. The use of feelings and emotions in a persuasive manor is referred to as using the pathos persuasive technique and is one of the most popular techniques used in our culture today. The feelings created from an ad like this could range from anger, to jealousy, sorrow, and even fear. This specific ad is oriented towards the specific emotions of determination and fearlessness that a quality competitor should have. Its displays the message to not ever give up and push on because the failures that even the greats of the sport have had motivated them to be better and become who they are today. The use of pathos helps Gatorade make it sound like anyone can succeed if they use their product by determining the viewers and providing that little bit of a push. This is meant to light that fire of emotion inside someone to do their best. Water makes up 75% of human body. It is the most important ingredient in our bodies. Today many people ignore drinking water and concentrate more into the carbonated drinks. One of the main reasons I would think people drink more carbonated drinks (such as sodas and sport drinks) is because of the way a company hype up their products and use their marketing strategies to influence people into buying them. Many benefits come out of drinking water. First, it quenches one’s thirst much better than any carbonated drinks. Second, it keeps one’s skin clear and healthy looking. In addition, it protects the human body from several diseases. Many people choose drinking sodas and sports drinks than water because water does not have much of a taste and carbonated drinks are flavored and tasteful. I guess I am one of those people who has being caught on to the hype of the soda companies. I do not really drink much water I would say I barely drink two cups a day, but I know the how good water is for my body. So I am modifying my behavior by adding more water to my diet.
