The 1978 World Series turned out to be an unexpected repeat of the previous year’s battle between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the 1977 six-game series the two teams traded shifting momentum. LA actually outscored New York by two more total runs, but the Yankees took the series 4-2. This year Los Angeles started out in the friendly surroundings at Chavez Ravine, the home of Dodger Stadium. The Friendly Confines Los Angeles faithful started the 1978 World Series with a great deal of enthusiasm. That enthusiasm ballooned after the first two games at Dodger Stadium. LA built a seven run lead after six innings. They matched a three run Yankee top of the 7th with their own three run bottom half. The Dodger bullpen …show more content…
gave up a couple runs in the 8th, but LA coasted to an 11-5 victory in game one. The Yankees felt they still had a good chance of a split in California, as they sent their staff ace Catfish Hunter to the hill in game two. However, LA right hander Burt Hooton matched the New York star pitch for pitch. Down only a run in the bottom of the 6th, Dodger third baseman Ron Cey smacked a three run homer off Hunter giving Los Angeles a 4-2 lead they would hold onto, securing a sweep of the first two games at Dodger Stadium.
Dodger momentum was building steam heading back east to Yankee Stadium. Back to the Bronx Fittingly, the Dodgers were enthusiastic about their two game lead in the 1978 World Series. However, when the Pinstripes took the field for game 3, the Yankees two had reason to be optimistic. Because of the way the regular season ended, the year’s best pitcher wasn’t available until the third game of the series. Ron Guidry did not disappoint. Although he scattered eight base hits and an unchacteristic seven walks, only one Dodger crossed the plate. Guidry finished with a complete game and the Yanks cut the LA lead in half with a 5 – 1 win game three. In the fourth game, first game starter Ed Figueroa redeemed himself. He was matching Dodger starter Bob Welch pitch for pitch until the 5th inning. Reggie Smith launched a dramatic three run homer to push the LA into the …show more content…
lead. New York would chisel away at the Dodger lead, albeit with one the more controversial plays in World Series history.
Reggie Jackson appeared to interfere with what would have been an inning out at first base. However, the ball deflected off Jackson and a second run scored cutting the LA lead to one. Thurman Munson would double home a run in the eighth tying the game. The controversial play in the sixth seemed to plague the Dodgers. New York plated a walk-off run in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull even at two games apiece. The Wheels Fall Off the Trolley Dodger Although years removed from their time in Brooklyn, there were still hundreds of New York residents who worshipped the Dodgers. Although the series was tied at 2-2, there was sense of urgency missing from the LA dugout. It was as if one play had knocked the wheels off their trolley. Los Angeles chipped away early, building a two run lead heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning. That point seemed to be the beginning of the end. New York pushed across seven runs in the 3rd and 4th innings and then coasted to an easy 12-2 shellacking. No Sunshine in Southern
California A series that left California with such promise now saw the Dodgers one game from losing to their arch rivals for a second consecutive year. LA would score in their first at bat for the second straight game, but other than a lone run in the 3rd inning, there would be no sunshine in Southern California on this day. The Yankees would push across three runs in their half the 2nd inning and that is all starter Catfish Hunter would need. Hunter avoided trouble a couple of times, but handed the ball over to Yankee closer Goose Gossage with a five run advantage. The Goose would slam the door shut on the Dodger season, and New York would repeat as champions. As late as July 1978, no one even thought the Yankees would be back in the World Series. A host of injuries left them double-digit games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. By going an astonishing 48-20 to close the season, they earned a one-game winner-take-all match with Boston for the division title. New York would meet Kansas City for a second year in a row, but dispatched them handily in four games. It set up a rematch of the 1977 series between two of the most fabled franchises in professional baseball. For a couple games it looked the year of the Dodger. However, as the last out call echoed across Chavesz Ravine, the New York Yankees had earned their 22nd World Series Championship, culminating maybe the most thrilling year in the clubs storied history.
On July 27 1959, A new York attorney named William shea had an idea of putting a new baseball team in new York since the dodgers and giants had left for california. So on march 1st 1961 His wish was granted. The new York metropolitan baseball club or “the new York mets” were introduced into the national league. The name of the team was chosen by owner Joan Payson. The other names that were put into thought were the rebels, skyliners, nybs and avengers just to name a few.On April 11,1962 the mets played their first game in franchise history and lost 11-4 to the St Louis cardinals. The first season was a miserable one.Manager Casey Stengel led the mets to a 62-100 record,The worst record in major league history. After a couple of more losing seasons, The mets finally made a move and signed pitcher Tom “the franchise”Seaver, one of the best pitchers who ever played the game. They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.

As the decade opened up with the year 1950, the Yankees were celebrating an American League Pennant and a World Series victory from the previous year. It was apparent in 1950 that the team had not taken too much time off as the team posted a 98-56 regular season record, winning their second straight Pennant and a trip to the World Series where they would match up against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1950, the Phillies were known as the Whiz kids because of their youth and amazing talent, but in the series against the Yankees they were swept in 4 games thanks to Joe DiMaggio- a legend in Major League baseball- and Phil Rizzuto- a shortstop who would enjoy one of his most productive seasons as well as the honor of earning American League MVP. Whitey Ford, a rookie pitcher for the Yanks, also enjoyed a stand out career, winning all 9 of his starts and losing only one game in relief. (Baseball History)
The New York Yankees lost to St. Louis in the 1926 World Series and came out in 1927 for revenge. (Geisler, 1) The Yankees opened the season on April 12th with an 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and they never looked back. (Frommer, 5) The Yankees never fell out of first place after that first day and finished 19 games ahead of Philadelphia who won 91 games respectively. (New York Yankees, 3) An astonishing feat for today's strategic baseball moves, the '27 Yankees went all year without a single roster move. (Geisler, 1) With a tremendous team built by owner, Jacob Ruppert and General Manager, Ed Barrow, the scene was set for a big year. Certainly meeting the New York standards with a record of 110 wins and 44 losses the Yankees had many indiv...

In 1979, the Los Angeles Dodgers were on a mission to find a new type of baseball player. Due to a conflict which developed as a result of the construction of the new Dodger stadium, Dodger management was having a difficult time marketing to the ever growing Mexican population in Los Angeles. In an attempt to start a baseball following within the Latino community, Dodger scouts were sent to Mexico to find a player who could garner the attention of Mexican Americans in southern California.

The World Series of 1919 resulted in the most famous scandal in baseball history. The teams that played were the White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. Eight players on the team were accused of losing the World Series on purpose. Those players were Claude Williams, Joe Jackson,
The 1919 World series resulted in the most famous Scandal in Baseball history. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the series against the Reds and were banned from Major League Baseball. (“History files-Chicago Black Sox”) All eight players were expelled in an attempt to save the purity of the game. The White Sox lost the opening game of the series nine to one, and then ended up losing the series five games to three. (“Black Sox Scandal”) They had won the American league pennant and were highly favored to beat the Reds in the World Series. (“Bankston, Carl. L”)
By now the gamblers had missed another payment, and the players had decided there was no reason to lose. At least if they won the Series, they would collect $5,000 each. Chicago won the sixth game 5-4 and the seventh 4-1. The players all seemed to play to the best of their abilities, and the national championship was within their grasp. Unfortunately, any chance of winning was ruined by Arnold Rothstein. Instead of betting individual games, he had bet on Cincinnati to win the series. With his investment at risk, Rothstein sent one of his henchmen to visit Williams, who was pitching in the eighth game. He explained to Williams that Rothstein wanted the Series to end the next day. He threatened Williams and his wife. Chicago lost 10-5. In the end, one scared man handed Cincinnati the World Series.
I myself remember that game, I was in my living room with my family watching the game, and David Justice hit a solo home run, the only run of the game. Tom Glavine pitched a great game, I remember being so excited when they won.
The official rule is that each team manager has the ability to challenge one play a game, and if the call is overturned then the manager may challenge a second play. If the manager is unsuccessful in his challenge then he may not challenge for the rest of the game. All controversial plays after the seventh inning must go under review to ensure that the correct call was made. The only plays that can be reversed are ground rule doubles, fan interference, boundary calls, force plays except double plays, tag plays on base paths, fair/foul calls in the outfield, catch/trap calls in the outfield, whether a runner passed a preceding runner, timing plays, batter hit by pitch, and scorekeeping issues. Plays that are not allowed to be reviewed include pitches called a ball or strike, ...
