Dystopian fiction is a type of fiction that is often described as a “nightmare” world, where society is mainly considered by domination and cruelty. In the novel “Blindness”, written by Joe Saramago and the movie “Elysium” directed by Neill Blomkamp, there were important and common characteristics that they both demonstrated of the dystopian societies. Both protagonist in the movie and novel show many similarities and as well as differences. In both the novel and the movie, the citizens live in a dehumanized state and the natural world has been banished and distrusted. These similarities and differences will be discussed in relation to today’s society. The plot in both Blindness and Elysium demonstrate that the citizens are living in a dehumanized state. In Elysium, citizens on earth are struggling to live since Earth has been overpopulated. Lack of health care is big issue for the citizens as the government isn’t providing enough for them. It is unfair for the citizens on Earth because the citizens who live on the space station called Elysium get all the proper health care they need because of the Med-Bay which can cure any medical problems or issue citizens have. Citizens on Earth do not have access to Med-Bay. In one of the scenes of the movie, Max who is the protagonist gets an injured arm and tries to get it healed by going to the hospital. When he is at the hospital, he sees that there are many other people there who also need medical attention. Many of the doctors and nurses struggle to help the people as they were many of them. This scene demonstrates that the citizens are living in a dehumanized state. Similarly in Blindness, the citizens who turn blind by the epidemic blindness disease are forced to stay in mental ho... ... middle of paper ... ...about today’s health care and the government system. Not all countries around the world have the right to health care such as parts of Asia, Africa and United States. It’s important for people to have good health care. In United States you have to pay for health care such as surgeries and clinic visits where as in Canada you do not. If people all around the world cannot get good health care, it can possibly lead us to a dystopian society. In conclusion, the novel Blindness and the movie Elysium, critic today’s world about healthcare and political system. There were important and common characteristics that they both demonstrated of the dystopian societies. In both the novel and the movie, the citizens live in a dehumanized state and the natural world has been banished and distrusted. These types of dystopian novel/movie show what can possibly happen in the future.
