Coming to an understanding of divorce is technically challenging and very emotional. Sociologists examine the macro-level of families to develop different theoretical aspects of divorced families. The structure of families in America today have revolutionized and created diversity within a family due to divorce. How has divorce redefined family composition? Many have different judgment, attitude, and knowledge that will put constraints in how a person will answer this question. Two different people would say divorce has either positively or negatively redefined family composition. However, a neutral person would just accept the fact that it has changed and redefined family arrangements.
The United States Census Bureau defines family as “a group [of] any two or more people (not necessarily including a householder) residing, together, and related by birth, marriage, or adoption. A household may be composed of one such group, more than one, or none at all. The count of family groups includes family households, related subfamilies, and unrelated subfamilies.” A family composition is redefined due to remarried families with stepchildren, single-parent households, or other family forms that are caused by divorce. This form of families also redefines the roles of each family member. However, children are the most affected by the separation of parents because of an overdependence on older siblings. Dr. Bren Neale and Dr. Jennifer Flowerdew, who are both affiliated with University of Leeds UK, carried out a research of children’s non-beneficial effects of divorced parents. ...ce there may be a possibility of a remarriage that changes the family structure. Remarried families may consist of multiple layers of a stepparent, or children that are from the previous marriage. Since divorce is becoming too common, people have become more acceptable of divorce than a few generations ago. Based on Gallup’s poll conducted May of last year 2013, older Americans are changing their moral attitude towards divorce. “The overall change in Americans' opinions on divorce is also largely a result of shifting views of those who are 55 and older.” When people are exposed to a divorce people will later on adapt to this concept. Whether it is redefining family composition in a negative or positive aspect, divorce has become socially accepted.
Beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge are taken into consideration to determine how divorce redefines family composition.
