Beauty, Tranquility, and having fun are all things that pull me back underwater every summer. Being deep underwater can calm my soul, letting me enjoy the wonderful scenes that only can be found under the rippling waves of the sea.
About two years ago; we were in the keys on the southern tip on Florida, and had just boarded a fairly homely dive boat for my first ocean dive ever. My Father and I had been planning this trip for months, and today was the day it would happen. As the sound of the motors choking to start came into my ears, and the smell of the gasoline seeped into my nostrils I imagined where we were going to be in an hour. We both glared at each other every few minutes as we scurried around the deck of the boat. The boat was cluttered with Scuba cylinders, Buoyancy Compensators, Regulators, dive lights, and my wetsuit, which I had just picked up.
I placed one leg in as I normally do, pulling that one up without much strain. Then did so with the other leg, feeling the neoprene start to grip onto my skin. When I went to put my upper body into the suit I could feel the neoprene stretching tightly around me, like a giant slowly encircling his fingers around me. I could not wait to get in the water to relieve its tension.
At that point I looked at what used to be the tiny dock from which we had departed fairly recently, but only saw the tiny outline of land on the horizon. Then I heard the divemaster yelling for us to put on the rest of our gea...
Dr. King establishes himself as many things, most importantly as a non-violent, authoritative man of God in order to identify himself as an equal to the clergymen. His religious influence supports the assertion that he has “the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state” (40). In his response to the men who so graciously wrote “A Call for Unity,” Dr. King establishes himself as a man of the Bible, as they have also identified themselves as members of the Christian church. This grants him the opportunity to summon the power of the Lord/God to support his argument, stating that blacks “will win our freedom because the sacr...
In “Letter from Birmingham Jail” Dr. Martin Luther King brings attention to the reality of racial inequality in the 1960s. King writes this letter in response to clergymen addressing their apprehensions regarding the timing of the nonviolence demonstrations. The letter addressees specific arguments presented in the clergymen’s letter and his direct response. King’s goal in writing this letter is to convince the clergymen that his strategies are right and just. In this section, King rebuts the allegation made by the clergymen that his actions were untimely. In his counter argument, King uses repetition, metaphors, emotional appeals in order to persuade the audience to support his cause.
He is addressing the clergymen directly with his letter, but he is also addressing the readers that will see it after the letter has been distributed to another person. He openly criticizes the clergymen and the other Christians that are supposed to be supporting the good cause and seeing that this isn’t what God would want. King says he is disappointed in the “white moderate, who is more devoted to order than to justice”(King 3). He is saying that is disappointed with the whites because they are more worried about following the laws that were set for them, than doing what is right. King also understands what history has said about African Americans, but he wants to show the readers that what the law has been is wrong (Osborn
King’s letter is addressed to many men of religion (Clergymen) who criticized Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s (SCLC) actions during their protests in the city of Birmingham. Through his letter, King expresses his disappointment about the clergymen’s criticisms, and he wants to address their concerns. King defends his right to be in Birmingham is very straightforward tone of writing. King presents a moral reason why he has the right to be present, as he says that he came to the city to fight injustice. He believes that all communities and state are related with one another. King blames the clergymen for criticizing the SCLC without trying to understand the racist causes of injustice that is being protested against. Dr. King explains his plans of organizing nonviolent action.
Robert Currie’s “The Diver”, on the surface, recounts a diver’s descent and ascent into a river as onlookers eagerly anticipate his fate. Beneath the surface, this poem is actually very spiritual. The diver’s descent into the water, and his arising from the water, can be compared to the crucifixion of Jesus. Through the masterful use of imagery and Biblical comparisons, Currie depicts the message that rebirth and hope can captivate and revitalize our spirits.
I smiled to myself and decided that I would go join in. With that, I took a huge deep breath and jumped into the salty water. The water was cool and refreshing; I felt it slide through my hair making it sway in the water. I swam deeper and deeper into the deep blue water. Sunlight streamed through it, lighting up the water around me turning it to gold. I kicked harder and I felt my muscles surge with strength and I pushed further. My lunges began to burn for the need of oxygen, but I refused to go up. I repeatedly told myself just a little bit longer. Until I was unable to proceed anymore without more air in my lungs, I swam to the top of the water taking a huge breaths, filling my lungs with air. I could then taste the salty water as it ran down my face and dripped over my lips. Just then I thought, I will never forget this moment, this place, or the experiences I felt while visiting
said, “Every time you dive, you hope you'll see something new - some new species. Sometimes the ocean gives you a gift, sometimes it doesn't.” As you are swimming under the ocean, imagine the sparkle of the water as you look up the surface from a hundred feet below; floating along with the current, slowly and deeply breathing while observing the sea life. Continue to imagine the ability to remain underwater for an hour or more, just swimming and observing the ocean. This is the life of a scuba diver. Many people think of Scuba Diving as a swim in the water, but in reality it is a very dangerous, and potentially fatal sport and activity. There are many types of Scuba
My vomit clouded the ocean surface with a purple-brown color before fading below the depths. On the other side of the vessel, I re-equipped my mask and plunged into the water to be greeted by my aunt – she was to be my snorkeling partner as she had much experience in the depths of Hawaii. When I submerged my head it was almost as if I had entered a new world. This unseen dimension housed a coral reef that vibrantly shone with a mixture of bright reds and deep blues. The reef almost seemed to pulsate as thousands of fish darted in and out of their subterranean homes. The water was thick with salt and teemed with plankton. We often resurfaced to point out fish to each other. I remember my aunt telling me of the environmental dangers of touching the still-living coral. “If you pierce its skin it will likely become infected and die, and all of the fish who live in it will die too,” she expertly explained. From then on I kept my distance to at least 5-6
Before a diver jumps off of a springboard, he does a sort of hop-skip step called a hurdle. After doing a few steps, the diver leaps up into the air with his arms raised. When he lands back down on the tip of the board, he swings his arms down past his legs and then up, leaping into the air and off of the board.
Dr. King used different approaches to reach the reasonableness of the clergymen. He used ethos by expressing his knowledge of theology to speak to their religious beliefs. He used logos by describing the teachings of St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas regarding the definition of just and moral laws, and compares to the unjustness of segregation. Dr. King used pathos by sharing his personal experience with segregation and the effects on a person’s personality. A just law does not degrade or humiliate a
There are many reasons the ocean is my favorite place to be. These range from the atmosphere and people at the ocean to the scenery experienced while there. It is a time for me to be free from all the hassles in my life and to "get away from it all," even if it is only for a week. The ocean should be enjoyed for what it is. Loud noise and all the hustle and bustle of boardwalks should not exploit it. At the ocean I can feel at home and at peace because it is my favorite place to be.
As we pulled out of my parents driveway, the circumstances seemed very surreal. My entire way of life had been turned upside down with only a few hours consideration. I was very much “at sea” in the ...
Next, we were sent to a shed where there were several sets of coveralls. Here we were instructed to pick out a pair of coveralls and a helmet that fit (as best as possible) and put them on. I must say that I felt more than a little silly wearing a pair of torn and uncomfortably tight coveralls ...
Thesis: There was no end to the apparent contradictions of personal philosophy versus popular culture, and what Shelley actually accomplished in his short life. Shelley was cognoscente of this contradiction, as can be seen in his Preface to The Revolt of Islam, and it continually shadowed his career.
When I was younger, my father was an avid diver, going out on the dive boat every weekend possible to take photographs while dragging my mother and I along for the ride. I was not one to complain though, because it meant going to the beach just about every weekend during prime diving season. The photographs that he took under water are what truly inspired me to hopefully get involved into marine sciences. The photographs were captivating; the different shades of blue and the variety of colors emitting from the various organisms captured within the photo were simply breathtaking. I did not understand how anyone could look away from them, and I still do not understand how people can look away from such photos. They allowed for me to see part of the organisms that lived under water; giving me a glimpse into another world, and into a world I only wanted to explore for my own
