In the United States of America, there are many different government systems. One particular government system that is not so positive is known as a divided government. Now according to the website SparkNotes a divided government is a type of government in which one party controls the presidency, while the other party is in charge of at least one house of Congress. Although in the past divided governments were rare, in the last forty-two years as of 2006 there have mostly been divided governments according to the website Cato Institute (Slivinski, 2006). As one can tell they are very common, but from my research do not seem very liked.
One might be wondering right now how a divided government is formed. A divided government as stated by the website Lumen happens when one or more legislature houses are controlled by the party in opposition to the party that runs the executive house. In contrast, a unified government according to Lumen occurs when the same party controls the executive and legislature entirely. One reason divided governments are trouble is that they make fulfilling campaign promises difficult since usually to pass a legislation both the Congress and the president need to agree (Krutz, 2017, p. 352). For example, according to the website Salon (Parton, 2017), the gun divide presents to us that the divide in this country is getting worse. Different political parties are arguing over why their views on guns are better and not trying to compromise to find a valuable solution. Thus, our government is getting worse and more divided. Now there has always been a growing division between the two parties, but it accelerated recently due to Democrats becoming more liberal as told by the website Salon (Parton, 2017).
