For my book report I chose fantasy fiction. I read the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. Divergent is about a girl named Beatrice Prior who lives in futuristic Chicago where society is organized by fraction. There are five factions that are surrounded by a wall in the city. “We are not the same. But we are, somehow, one.” She grew up in the faction Abnegation with her mother Natalie, her father Andrew and her brother Caleb. The story first takes place when Beatrice and her brother are 16 and are heading to a ceremony to decide which faction they want to choose for life. The five factions are Dauntless (the brave), Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), and Amity (the peaceful). Each person takes a test …show more content…
Lose Yourself is related to the theme of Divergent. The song is about overcoming problems and obstacles to gain the respect of others. “He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready”. This relates to Divergent and the theme of choices because Tris has to show so much bravery in her quest to become a Dauntless but underneath her braveness, she is scared. The choice of fraction is the most important choice a person can make “One choice can transform you.” Tris is going to do what she feels is right and not let others limit her. The Hanging Tree is related to the conflict of Divergent. The song is about the conflict between the districts and the capital in The Hunger Games. It symbolises the effects of direct conflict and how it affects both of the groups. “Strange things did happen here”. In Divergent, the main conflict is between Tris and society. She struggles with her Abnegation instincts because that's how her family raised her. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall is related to the character Tris. The song's meaning is that in the middle of trials and hard times, there is a purpose behind it all “Every little tear we shed is another lesson learned.” Tris is trying to figure out who she is and where she fits in. Because being divergent means she won’t fit in with her world. Her personal struggle is to …show more content…
The song Lose Yourself was written by Eminem about his life. He overcame growing up poor and used his talent of writing and singing rap songs to better his life. In the book Tris has to use her physical and mental strength. The song The Hanging Tree is about a man that tried to change things peacefully and was falsely accused. Tris has been falsely accused because she is divergent but instead of changes made peacefully there is a lot of violence. The song Every Teardrop is a Waterfall was written by Chris Martin because as a band they have been through incidents of people being aggressive towards them and how they turn a negative into a positive. He feels that everyone has something like that in their lives. In Divergent there are many evil people and negatives in a broken city that it is hard to see the positive. At the end of the book you are left wondering where the train will end that Tris and Four are on. “I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must be more than

For example, one line, “Soon our pilgrimage will cease; Soon our happy hearts will quiver, with the melody of peace,” which is saying that one day we will die, and you can’t stop that. “Lay we every burden down; Grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and a crown,” also reveals that you should appreciate what we’ve had, and what was given to us. This song is telling you, in every line, that you can’t live forever, but appreciate what you have, while you
...eturn. I relate to this song from a past relationship where I gave little to nothing back in return. This song is an inspiration to me, and I love the story behind the story. Tim had two inspirations in writing this song, from the book itself and a past relationship of his own. Tim Lopez and his band The Plain White T’s have produced many albums, and they’re an astounding band. Every one of all ages and genders can relate to this song.
The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous. She decides to start going byTris, because Beatrice won’t fit in with the dauntless. When Beatrice makes the decision to be a dauntless she says “My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation’. This is because it was selfish of her to choose to be a Dauntless. Beatrice doesn’t like to be told what to do, and will stand up for what she thinks is right. Beatrice tries to be kind to others, but sometimes she just can’t control herself.
The novel starts out with Tris and her brother Caleb preparing for their aptitude tests. This test shows them (or at least is supposed to show them) which faction they belong in or where they fit in. Tris’s results come back inconclusive, therefore she is divergent, and her results are manually recorded as Abnegation. Divergent, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary can be defined as “differing from each other or from a standard.” In the novel, when someone is “divergent” they fit into multiple of the five factions. They do not conform to only one of the five standards. This forcing of choice causes them to conform to the patterns of a specific lifestyle even when if it means not being completely true to whom they are. Specifically in Tris’s case, she fit into Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), and Abnegation (the selfless). By choosing Dauntless she had to suppress her intelligence and ignore the intuition to help others, which in the end proved to be a difficult task.
Lastly Four (Tobias) completes Tris. Tris doesn't want to feel anything but with Four she
In the book divergent there are five factions known as Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless. Each faction has their unique trait. There is a test made to show you what faction you are meant for but when Beatrice took the test, her results came back showing she was equally meant for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. She is what the society call Divergent. Divergent think in a way that the average other people can’t Jeanine Matthews wants to eliminate all Divergent because she thinks it is a threat to society and equality. Beatrice will have to make allies to help foil Jeanine’s plans.
...e desires above all else (p.432). The negative propaganda is not working fast enough to end the power held by the Abnegation faction (p. 244-246), “the failings of choosing government officials based on their faction, asking why only people who define themselves as selfless should be in government”(p. 261-262). Beatrice concludes that “Selflessness and bravery aren’t that different” (p. 396) not through impatience but through longsuffering and goodness.
The song is interesting because reading the lyrics, listening to the song, and watching the music video all give different meanings about the song. Reading the lyrics suggests that the song is a depressing story about the inner turmoil the writer is feeling and how he is not sure what to do with his life. But after listening to this upbeat and happy song, it seems like it may not be as dreary as it seemed at first. After watching the music video the message can be reinterpreted to be about the internal conflicts of a soldier fighting in a war and he does not know what he is fighting for. The fact that the music completely changes how the lyrics are interpreted is interesting. Nate uses many literary techniques to make this song mysterious and open to interpretation depending on how it is experienced.
In the first stanza, first line; I saw two trees embracing, this means that there is a couple that is in love. In the second and third line we see that the male is weaker “one leaned on the other, as if to throw her down” and in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh line we notice that the female has the strength, willpower and is dominating. In the second stanza, line one, two and three we see that the female being dominant makes the male feel broken and intimidated. In line four “the most wind-warped, you could see”, hear we see that there is a major problem between the two.
The science fiction novel Divergent is the first instalment in the divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. The story is set in a futuristic dystopian version of Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each faction devoted to a certain virtue. The five factions include the following: Candor (honest), Abnegation (selfless), Dauntless (brave), Amity (peaceful), and Erudite (intelligent). The protagonist, Beatrice is originally Abnegation born; however, she is required to make a decision and choose a faction that she feels most suitable for, with assistance by the aptitude test to define the faction she is most suitable for. Test results reveal the Beatrice is divergent which defines her as having an equal aptitude for more than one faction. She is compatible for Erudite, Dauntless, and Abnegation. During the Choosing ceremony, Beatrice announces her choice of faction, Dauntless. Beatrice receives a warning about her status as a Divergent, she must keep this a secret; otherwise, consequences such as death will be an option. Throughout the training and initiation as a Dauntless, Beatrice falls in love with Tobias (Four). However, when she discovers tensions between factions are mounting and a rising conflict that threatens to destroy the society, she must do anything to stop the disruption before it is too late. She must save her former faction.
... said Divergent shows how the pressure really is with "Having to choose between following in your parents' footsteps or doing something new."
Divergent transpires in a futuristic Chicago where the society is divided into factions and isolated from the rest of the world. Beatrice Prior, who will later be known as Tris, is an intelligent sixteen-year-old who was ambivalent when she found out she was divergent and did not belong to one of the factions, rather she belonged to all five of them. Throughout the movie she displays strength, bravery, gratitude, love, and many more emotions. In this essay I argue that in the movie Divergent, individuals hold each other accountable to survive and if they do not they will become factionless.
Considering altogether setting, figures of speech and tone we can finally conclude what is this song is about.
