“Divergent” Summary

In a Dystopian society based on the future in Chicago, survivors of a post-apocalyptic city choose a faction which they are obligated to abide in order to avoid the streets and stay with a group. There are 5 factions which believe a certain virtue is best. The factions include Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Amity, and Candor. To determine your faction, someone takes you through an aptitude test. A despised group called Divergent is disapproved in this society for several reasons. Divergent don't fit into any other factions because they are different; In addition, they are immune to physical and mental control which is a problem for the totalitarian government; therefore, divergent are executed if exposed. Beatrice Prior, the main character, is separated from her family after her aptitude test. She was tested divergent; however, the supervisor was shocked and decided to conceal the secret. She then advises Beatrice to join Dauntless which are dedicated to fearlessness, toughness, and courage. She changes her name to Tris because she feels it will let her become a different person. Tris quickly makes some friends as well as enemies and meets the enigmatic recruit trainer, Four. He trains the initiates by testing their bravery with many difficult and dangerous tasks. Later, the Dauntless leaders inject a “peaceful” serum saying it was a tracking device. This test shows them (or at least is supposed to show them) which faction they belong in or where they fit in. Divergent, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary can be defined as “differing from each other or from a standard.” In the novel, when someone is “divergent” they fit into multiple of the five factions. They do not conform to only one of the five standards. This forcing of choice causes them to conform to the patterns of a specific lifestyle even when if it means not being completely true to whom they are. Specifically in Tris’s case, she fit into Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), and Abnegation (the selfless). By choosing Dauntless she had to suppress her intelligence and ignore the intuition to help others, which in the end proved to be a difficult task.
