Divergent is all about identity and finding where you belong and where to fit in. Divergent takes place in a dystopian future society in which there are 5 factions that one must choose from or end up becoming ‘factionless’. ‘Factionless’ people are people who didn’t fit in the system, they have no identity, no places to live and the lowest social status.
The protagonist had a sense of bravery ever since she was a child which I believe makes here a great character. The scene where she was tested impressed me when the woman taking her test gave here extreme expression and began to panic telling the protagonist (Beatrice) to leave immediately and telling here to never share here results with anyone made me feel shocked.
In the choice room scene where Beatrice has to choose between the 5 factions while a large number of people is also choosing and the way to chose was to cut your hand with a knife that is next to 5

Then after they land on the roof they are told by the leader of the faction to jump off the building into a broken roof where a net lies below but no one is willing to jump. Beatrice jumps first and lands on the net. The guy operating the net picked her up, put her on the ground and then they had a cliché stare where someone meets their love interest and soon they will be making out. Beatrice is asked by the net man her name and for some reason Beatrice changed her name Tris on the spot and it made no sense what so ever. The net man’s name turned out to be four yes as in the number but its later reviled he got that name because he has 4 fears which is supposed to sound wise or something but it just sounds very
It deals with obstacles in life and the ways they are over come. Even if you are different, there are ways for everyone to fit in. The injustices in this book are well written to inform a large audience at many age levels. The book is also a great choice for those people who cheers for the underdogs. It served to illustrate how the simple things in life can mean everything.
This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
The conflict that the individual faces will force them to reinforce and strengthen their identity in order to survive. In “The Cellist of Sarajevo” all the characters experience a brutal war that makes each of them struggle albeit in different ways. Each of them have their own anxieties and rage that eventually makes them grow as characters at the end of the book. When looking at what makes a person who they are it becomes obvious that the struggles they have faced has influenced them dramatically. Legend, by Marie Lu, is a novel about a thief and an officer who are turned against each other, but find common ground while trying to take down their corrupt government. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is about a boy who is chosen to be different, but uses the secrets he’s been told by his own community. Although Legend and The Giver both display protagonists who don’t fall victim to dehumanization, both novels are filled with surveillance, propaganda, and the illusion of a utopia. Without the protagonist, these dystopian citizens would continue their meaningless lives without even the right to realize it.
Flannery O'Connor's "Everything That Rises Must Converge" and "Good Country People" have extremely complex story lines. What makes these stories so involved is how the characters relate to others. Discovering who the characters in the stories are and what they represent becomes the reader's purpose and goal. In order to truly understand her stories the reader must look deeper than the surface. The underlying messages must be searched for as a person looking for hidden treasure.

Throughout 1984 and Divergent, conformity and obedience force the characters to go to great lengths in order to follow the basics and rules of the government. Throughout Orwell’s 1984, the individuals of the society hang onto every word, law, and thought of Big Brother. The citizens focus primarily on the Ministries and Party, not forming connections or relationships with others. Each member of a party have certain jobs and clothing assigned to them, separating them for others to easily detect. The same concept lies within the factions of Divergent. Each faction has a different job, and different colors to wear in order to display their role in society. The leaders of each Faction also hold the phrase “faction before blood,” depicting the same messege Big Brother enforces in 1984. Both governments want the individuals to stay within their parties, and do the jobs assigned to them. However, both novels include characters refusing to conform and obey to government rules. In 1984, Winston Smith resents Big Brother, using his knowledge from the Minitrue to reveal the lies the government spreads. Because of the disatisfaction Winston shows towards his government, O’Brien follows him, tortures him, and brainwashes him into conforming like the others. In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
In it, she saw Cavendish fighting oppression. This leads her to have rebellious thoughts. With the aid of a commander of the rebellion against the current society, she escapes and joins the rebellion. She becomes the face of the rebellion and writes the Declarations that tell about the horrible truths of the current society. They are very inspirational.
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.
There is a central government that is in control of all these people who are separated into different groups. This same government can do whatever it pleases and the people have no say in what the government can and cannot do. In Divergent, the Government tries to use mind control to get its army to kill innocent people. It was up to people like Tris to stop the government from continuing to carry out the meticulous plan.
The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie The Hunger Games directed by Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross are popular among teens because they can relate to them by the high expectations put upon them. In a dystopian novel or movie, there is a dystopian protagonist. A dystopian protagonist is someone who often feels trapped, struggles to escape, questions existing systems, believes or feels as if something is wrong in the place they live in, and then helps the audience realize the effects of dystopian worlds. These are both good examples because it takes us on a walk through the protagonist's life and only then do we see what dystopian really is.
I believe this book show the true struggle with family, life, and society. Divergent reveals that life holds its ups and downs and that anything can bring out the ugly in someone’s life. Having to choose between one way of living and another is something everyone goes through and it can be hard. Even if one made the wrong choice, they have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Divergent shows that anyone can be scared of even the littlest things and those things can tear someone apart. If made my fair share of terrible choices but I choose not to let them get in my way of making my life right. I have fears that I don’t know why I have, but I have them and they can’t effect me and what I want to do.
