The main theme of Divergent by Veronica Roth is that no matter where you start, you can always achieve greatness. Even through her parents’ divorce, Roth kept to her true passion and went to Nortwestern University to enter a creative writing program. This book was an action/adventure book based in an alternate universe with a dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago where the entire society was judged and placed in five communities: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (kindness/happiness), Candor (honesty), and Erudite (intelligence). The story begin following an abnegation girl by the name of Beatrice Prior. When Tris had to face her fears, four, her instructor, said,” Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that’s the point,” that made me want to keep reading to see what lies within her fears, and how she deals with them, leding into her second round of initiation.(Four, Chapter 18, Page 239) Everything in the book had some sort of action tied to it, whether it be combat or romance, which made it a enjoyable book to read. Over time, Tris accepts that she doesn’t fit in to a single faction, nor will she ever fit in to a single faction, and says, “I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not dauntless. I am Divergent.”(Tris, Chapter 35,Page 442) After Erudite launches their attack on Abnegation using serum-induced dauntless members, Tris is able to sneak to Four, her instructor, because she is Divergent, and the serum does not affect her. They get caught, and they take Four away. She escapes with the help of her mother, and they run to a safe house, where her and some abnegation refugees devise a plan to shut down the serum-induced simulation. The theme begins to come into play when she becomes the one to save the rest of the factions from the erudite, proving that no matter how small you think you are, you can achieve greatness.
