Too many have died due to distracted driving accidents. Whether talking, messing with the radio, or texting, distracted driving can cause serious life threatening accidents. Many of the victims are teenagers. I believe one main reason for that is teens do not fully understand the consequences of their dangerous behavior. I believe PSAs can help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents because it shows distracted drivers the consequences of their habit. They also have personal anecdotes from those affected by distracted driving incidents. People may say that distracted drivers know that what they are doing is dangerous. However, PSAs put the distracted driver in the place of people who have been in accidents, as well as their families.
It causes teens to think more critically about their habits, and how they may affect those around them. According to the Official Website for Distracted Driving, " 3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers." (Distracted Driving: Key Facts and Statistics). This is why PSA's are so important. I believe that PSA's show teens the consequences of their actions. If more of them were introduced at a young age, it would prevent teens learning to drive from thinking that distracted driving is inconsequential. It shows that accidents can happen to anyone, and that they often occur when you least expect it. The main problem I see with most distracted driving incidents, is that teens do not expect anything to happen. This means we need to put more funding into educating children and teens about the possibilities when you get behind the wheel. People may say that distracted drivers know that what they are doing is dangerous. However, PSAs put the distracted driver in the place of people who have been in accidents, as well as their families. Distracted driving is a serious problem affecting millions of people. It causes serious, life threatening accidents. If we can all come together to educate today's youth about the effects of distracted driving through PSA's, we can be part of the solution to lowering the number accidents, injuries, and needless deaths.

In today’s day and age there are so many excuses for distracted driving. Lives are put at risk every time a distracted motorist is on the road, and deaths have increased by a substantial amount in the last ten years. On Thursday, April 26th, 2014 one woman’s bad judgement cost her life (Hastings, 1). Not only was she effected, but her friends and family assuredly felt a pain in their hearts. In the few seconds it took Courtney Ann Sanford to post a few words on Facebook, it was enough to distract her from the road and to drive across another lane and through a median straight into a Truck (Hastings, 1). The increased uses of cell phones and texting while driving has become the center of safety conversations. In fact, there are more than 5,000 deaths related to the use of cell phones and texting while driving over the last decade. Even if laws were put in place it is believed that motorists would still find it hard to put down their phones down. Hosansky also gave an example on the hazards of texting while driving, especially among young drivers. this PSA give intel from a real person that was fortunate enough to survive a drunk driving accident. The speaker in the video is a T4 paraplegic, which means he is paralyzed from the nipples down which unfortunately means he can not reproduce. Out all three PSAs this video is the most effective because it shows that if you are able to survive a drunk driving accident you are most likely to become a paraplegic. I think the least effective drunk driving PSA was the first PSA because although it’s very straightforward, it is not giving the targeted audience a full explanation on how to stop from drinking and driving. The video simply indicates that if you have been drinking and decide to get behind the wheel you are putting yourself and passengers at risk of either dying or living with permanent damage to the body. Although I favor the third PSA or the first PSA, both serve as a great way to bring light to the world to how serious drunk driving is. I believe Public Service Announcements (PSA) can not help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents. 82% of American teens ages 16 to 17 own a cell phone. 52% said they have talked on the phone while driving. 32% have texted behind the wheel. 80% of crashes are caused by people texting or calling on their phones. “It seems so common sense not to text while driving, but people are so connected to their electronic devices that they kind of forget themselves.” It takes less then three seconds of not paying attention to cause an accident and one second to stop it. No matter what Public Service Announcements say they can not stop stupidity, people will always do what they want and until they realize that themselves these incidents will never stop.
