For my research topic I have chosen the topic “Distance Learning” also known as online learning and e learning.
I am going to use ethos in my argument by listing references from credible sources that have outstanding backgrounds in education to help persuade my audience that online learning is just as good as traditional learning. I will also list studies and statistics that have been done supporting my claims.
I will also be implementing pathos by explain how some people would have never been able to attend school if e-learning did not exist due to their busy schedules and taking care of a household at the same time. It would nearly be impossible to get a higher education to provide better means for their family’s that are counting on them.

Ethos, Pathos and Logos are all modes of persuasion used by a speaker to connect with their audience to get their point across during an argument.
Ethos is when a speaker is trying to persuade someone that he is a credible source when discussing or arguing on an issue.
Example for Ethos: If I were a Doctor and I was trying to convince someone to get a procedure done I would say I have been a doctor for thirty plus years and have performed theses procedures numerous of times trust me I know what I am talking about ask anyone you know in the business about me.
Pathos is a persuasive method used by a speaker to tap into people’s feelings to gain an emotional response from their audience.
Example for pathos: When you are watching T.V. late at night and a feed the children Ad comes on and you see kids starving with flies all over them you feel horrible so you send in a donation.

In order to have a complete argument, one needs to first be a credible source, be able to show equality on both sides and also be fair to the other side’s argument. This rhetoric appeal is known as ethos, a method of persuasion, a way to convince the audience and make their argument relevant.
There are three methods of persuasion when speaking or writing to an audience: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Ethos uses a type of socially recognized authority as its voice. Logos uses logic and reasoning as its tool. Lastly, Pathos uses emotional attachment. For instance, the advertising industry primarily utilizes Ethos and Pathos reasoning and qualities, particularly a Matthew Mcconaughey Lincoln Motor Company commercial, and a Safe driving bonus check Ally Insurance commercial.
A pathos appeal allows an emotional connection through empathy, while a logos appeal is based on logic. Vidal’s use of the logos appeal will attract logistical people, and will be mostly used in research papers. “If we really want to reduce the human impact on the environment,” Vidal states “the simplest and cheapest thing anyone can do is to eat less meat” (p. 1). His tone throughout the article is apathetic, so readers will only get the information, not knowing what it has to do with their personal life. Having both appeals, like Lundberg demonstrates, is better for readers because it takes the emotional and technical stance.
Pathos is an emotional appeal in which the advertisers hope that the consumers will allow their claim. Say for instance most people will notice a puppy behind what looks like to be a rusty cage. Seeing a cage like that, makes some wonder how bad the conditions are that the puppy is living in. then there is the puppy who looks very solemn, sad, and miserable. It makes one think how can people do this, why would they do this. Effectively communicating an idea or opinion requires several language techniques. In his study of rhetoric, Aristotle found that persuasion was established through three fundamental tools. One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. Although each of these tools can be effective individually, a combination of rhetorical devices when used appropriately has the ability to sway an audience toward the writer’s point of view.
Pathos: is an approach that appeals to the audience’s emotions. Including specific examples showing how tragedies have been avoided thanks to first responders being trained. Also, included in Pathos are examples on how tragedies have happen due to the misunderstanding

Pathos is in use when the author says, “Attempts to add sexual orientation to the federal statute began shortly after the brutal murder of young Matthew Sheppard in Wyoming, apparently because of his homosexuality.” He uses logos when he says, “ the yearly number of hate-crimes charges brought by the Justice Department dropped from seventy-six in 1996 to twenty-two ten years later.

Examples of this in the billboard advertisement are the sponsors at the bottom: Baron Real Estate, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Lung Association.
Every day we are victims to persuasion whether anyone can notice it or not. Logos, pathos and ethos are the types of persuasion. Logos persuades by reason, pathos by appealing to emotion and ethos by the credibility of the author. The characters in The Iliad employ the use of these techniques to sway another character into doing or feeling something else.
