In the field of psychology we come across many theories and assumptions. Those theories often have explanation and are usually explained with an example such as personality. Personality is explained with theories that everyday theorist and psychologist use. The most well known theories that explain personality are dispositional, biological and evolutionary theory. This paper will discuss the differences that come into the field of psychology among dispositional, evolutionary, and biological personality theories and there relevance in the field of psychology as well as in human behavior. This paper will also discuss the Big Five personality test and the method that is used to study everyday personalities.

Dispositional theory is responsible for development of the objective personality test which is used to gather information about an individual’s personality behavior. Evolutionary theories explain personality traits in terms of adaptive value (Sarah, 2012). This theory has an influence on an individual behaviors and peer relationships. The limitation of dispositional theory is the theory describes people rather than trying to understand them. This theory relies on self report personality test to validate and measure its attributes. Problems of test such as social desirability and aquiescence also raise questions in regard to the dispositional theories (Paul, 2009). Biological theories also have limitations as well. Biological theory has a limited method for testing theories. This test or evaluation was created by David Buss. The Big Five personality test attributes are significant to traits that are given to human beings as a procreative benefit. The Big Five personality traits are well known throughout the field of psychology. This test is recognized and frequently is used model or personality in theoretical psychology along with all psychology in general. The model uses the factor analysis to look at the response of individual’s personality (Sarah, 2012). Big Five personality test has many factors but the main factors are extraversion versus introversion, agreeableness versus antagonism, consciousness versus un – directedness, neutrocism versus emotional stability and openness to experience versus not open to experience. These Big Five Traits on behavior often react to the same situations overtime. The Big Five traits help individual’s act in response to reliability in the same situation that may behaving in a given situation. With this situation; the situation may or may not mean there are inconsistencies. The Big Five test can be argued as a predictor of single behavior of acts, but they also can be better predictors of general developments of individual behaviors. For this test, this would mean an individual would have to observe their past behavior which would ultimately be a better predictor for their future
After Allport, came along two psychologists, Raymond Cattell and Hans Eysenck, who each formulated their own theories regarding traits. Their theories have been the subjects of considerable research in the world of psychology. Cattell seemed to focus on far too many traits, while Eysenck seemed to focus on too few. To humans, life appears to be a dynamic, unpredictable environment to which diversity they react and behave in a certain particular way best suiting to their respective preferences introducing the notion of personality; Psychologists, over time, after various studies, have come along with a series of standardized characteristics that tend to be the mostly manifested while examining personalities and finally came up with the popularly known as The Big Five Theory. On this paper I will get into a description of myself according this theory’s 5 aspects which are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, agreeableness and Neuroticism;
“The Five Factor Model provides a compelling framework for building personality measures that seek to represent the domain of individual terms broadly and systematically” (Briggs, 1989 as cited in McAdams. DP, 1992, p. 332). The FFM consists of five factors (The ‘Big Five’). They are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. When measured individuals can range from extremes on each of these traits.

The Biological approach to personality places emphasis on the genetic influences related to the development of an individual’s personality. Some may believe that children and their parents can have very similar personalities, for example a young boy having his father’s anger (Stelmack, 1990). Though this approach has often been questioned by psychologists, it is not disregarded all together. Some believe that genetics do have a role in an individual’s personality development; however environments, as well as personal experiences all work in forming personality.
A Comparison of the Main Approaches to Personality Psychology Psychology of personality is a difficult concept to define and quantify, therefore most personality theories, however different they may be in other respects, share the basic assumption, that personality is a particular pattern of behaviour and thinking, that prevails across time and situations and differentiates one person from another. Most theories attempting to explain personality represent part of the classic psychological Nature verse Nurture debate. In addition, we shall compare and contrast two of the main approaches to personality psychology by concentrating on Psychoanalytical Theory (Freud) and Social Learning Theory (Bandura). By looking at the Psychodynamic approach, developed by Freud, we can argue that it emphasizes the interplay of unconscious psychological processes in determining human thought, feelings, and behaviours.
The study of personality traits is beneficial in identifying the many variables that exist from human to human; the combinations of these variables provide us with a true level of individuality and uniqueness. In the field of psychology, trait theory is considered to be a key approach to the study of human personality (Crowne, 2007; Burton, Westen & Kowalski, 2009). This paper aims to identify a number of significant contributors who have played crucial roles in both the development and application of trait theory. This paper then moves focus to these theorists, outlining their theory and analysing both the strengths and weaknesses of those theories. An illustration of the methods used in trait measurement is given and includes the arguments both for and against such procedures.
