Disillusionment Changes Everything
During the time period of 1920-1940, many American stories were written. This was a time in American history that is known as the Harlem Renaissance. At the time of the Harlem Renaissance, authors wrote on different things. However, the main focuses of author’s writings were mainly based on the African American culture. Writings from Ralph Ellison, and Langston Hughes demonstrated these works within their writings. Their writings also created a theme of disillusionment, and how belief and frustration, only lead to disappointment. As a result of the Harlem Renaissance, a theme of disillusionment of man was created in American literary history, through the authors’ writings of American literature.

John has a little boy he looks after that has to stay in the back of the building. Since John and his little boy are both African American, they are both judged by the community, and have responsibilities to uphold as well. In this story it conveys the theme of disillusionment of man. One example from the story that shows this is when John’s little boy is playing with his ball, and a white boy takes it and throws it into the manager’s office to get him in trouble. Additionally, not even knowing what really happened, the manager Berry is furious with John. In the story he says “Well if I ever see him around her again, you’re going to find yourself behind the black ball. Now get him on round the back and then come up here and clean up this mess he’s made.” (Ellison 351). This shows how upset the manager was with John about the ball being thrown, and how he is initially frustrated with the belief that Johns little boy threw it up there. Ellison explores the detrimental effect that racism has on a person. John reflects while conversing with the fellow in the lobby,“That part wasn't missing. When they did have something to say to us, they always became familiar” (Ellison 345). As John continues to talk to the fellow in the lobby, he begins to feel a sense of insecurity, “'Any other colored folks working here?' 'I’m the only one,' I lied. There were two others. It was none of his business anyway” (Ellison 345). In “The Black Ball” Ellison uses dialogue to convey a theme of racism. The word “they” is used to represent white people, and the word “us” to represent African Americans. Even in the writing they are segregated, furthering the point that John is not given equal opportunities or even treated with basic civilities. Because of the racism that John has been subjected to, he has developed a sense of mistrust. He feels the need to lie to the fellow because he does not trust him, and he feels his job might be in jeopardy. By adding details like these to the plot,
1920’s Harlem was a time of contrast and contradiction, on one hand it was a hotbed of crime and vice and on the other it was a time of creativity and rebirth of literature and at this movement’s head was Langston Hughes. Hughes was a torchbearer for the Harlem Renaissance, a literary and musical movement that began in Harlem during the Roaring 20’s that promoted not only African-American culture in the mainstream, but gave African-Americans a sense of identity and pride.
After World War I, Harlem became known for the sudden emergence of literature, theater and music attributed to the migration of African Americans from the South and other cities. Both Zora Neal Hurston and Richard Wright emerged as writers this time, this, however, should not be the sole basis for comparison of their writing as writers themselves. Both Wright and Hurston had different agendas as writers and it is not as important to note their upbringing and backgrounds, but their audiences and the reason that drove them to write.

The narrator wants to overcome these stereotypes and have his own individual identity.
Originally referred to as the “New Negro Movement”, the Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement during the early twentieth century. It was started by the Great Migration of blacks to the North during World War I. This period resulted in many people coming forth and contributing their talents to the world, inspiring many. One of the poets of this time, Jessie Redmon Fauset, was one of those who wrote about the life of blacks and life in general during this time period. She used her good and bad past experiences as influences for her works.
The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and literary period of growth promoting a new African American cultural identity in the United States. The decade between 1920 and 1930 was an extremely influential span of time for the Black culture. During these years Blacks were able to come together and form a united group that expressed a desire for enlightenment. This renaissance allowed Blacks to have a uniform voice in a society based upon intellectual growth. The front-runners of this revival were extremely focused on cultural growth through means of intellect, literature, art and music. By using these means of growth, they hoped to destroy the pervading racism and stereotypes suffocating the African American society and yearned for racial and social integration. Many Black writers spoke out during this span of time with books proving their natural humanity and desire for equality.

This story takes place in the south during the civil rights movement when people were trying to eliminate poverty and racism from the society that they lived in. There are four important characters in this story, and the two main ones are Julian and his mother. Julian is a recent college graduate who lives with his mother but knows “some day [he’ll] start making money” (Mays 448). Julian sees the world as ever changing during the civil rights movement and does not like or condone racism. Although this is true he subconsciously is small minded and petty just like his mother. His mother often makes racist remarks and will not find herself sitting next to a black African American adult. She often would bring up the topic of race to Julian “every few days like a train on an open track” (Mays 449). She also makes her son ride the bus with her to the YMCA because of the new changes due to the civil rights movement and in some ways this makes Julian mad. As they begin to board the bus Julian and his mother argue but quickly board. Shortly later a black woman and her son named Carver board. Carver sits next to Julian’s mother, she does not mind, and Carver’s mother sits next to Julian. Carver’s mother is an impatient woman who ironically wears the same hat as Julian’s mother. Langston Hughes was probably the most well-known literary force during the Harlem Renaissance. He was one of the first known black artists to stress a need for his contemporaries to embrace the black jazz culture of the 1920s, as well as the cultural roots in Africa and not-so-distant memory of enslavement in the United States. In formal aspects, Hughes was innovative in that other writers of the Harlem Renaissance stuck with existing literary conventions, while Hughes wrote several poems and stories inspired by the improvised, oral traditions of black culture (Baym, 2221). Proud of his cultural identity, but saddened and angry about racial injustice, the content of much of Hughes’ work is filled with conflict between simply doing as one is told as a black member of society and standing up for injustice and being proud of one’s identity. This relates to a common theme in many of Hughes’ poems: that dignity is something that has to be fought for by those who are held back by segregation, poverty, and racial bigotry.
