For decades without end, members of the Sikh faith have suffered countless injustices at the hands of their fellow countrymen. The Sikh religion was started in India during the fifteenth century by the first guru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Sikh were a peace loving people who spread messages of freedom and equality. They even went as far as too risk their lives to help out other religions. India reduced Sikh's to second class citizens, and didn't even consider them as a proper religion. Thousands of years ago, Indian society developed into a complex system based on different classes. This system was known as the Caste System. It separated Indians into different castes based on what class were born into. As thousands of years went by, this system grew larger and became further complex (Wadley 189). This system caused frustration for the Indian citizens because they were receiving inequality. Not only did the inequality and separation of the Indian society frustrate the citizens of India, but the imperialism Britain had upon them as well. The book “Neither Man nor Women” is an ethnography about the Hijras of India published in 1990. Serena Nanda, author of the book, is a professor of Anthropology in City University of New York. When beginning her fieldwork in the study of the Hijras, she only had brief information about the Hijras since there was not much written about them before. Nanda knew she would encounter conflict in communicating with the Indian community and that she would need translators. In the city she settled in, Bastipore, which is located in south central India, there were three spoken languages. She states in the introduction that the translation process was “time consuming, but [she] felt it was necessary to make sure that [she] had correctly understood the subtleties and complexities in such conversations and to increase the reliability of [her] data” (xix). I can understand why it was so imperative to have a translator, especially because she wanted to provide readers with valid information of such unique group of people. Her organization of the book contained chapters with different informative topics about the Hijras. A few of the different sections consisted of: defining Hijras, an overview of the roles they played in society, description of their rituals and spirituality, the operation process, work, personal interviews of individual Hijras. The way she selected to organize the book is acceptable and easy to follow through. As a result of Nanda’s fieldwork, she was able to accumulate comprehension of the Hijras of India and give readers a glimpse of their lifestyle in great detail.
Immigration is a movement about settlement of people into another country to which they are not natives. As of the current time, the United States has made itself a new home for immigrants in search of a better life, religious freedom and opportunities. It embraces those who come to the USA often with nothing more than their work ethic in search of the promises and opportunities of the American Dream. Over the last decade, the Indian immigration population had been skyrocketing and approximately 3.6 million in the USA. Asian Indians are the second largest community in the USA after Chinese Americans. Asian Indians started to form their own communities and expanded their religions which make them distinguish among the others immigrants. Asian Indians immigrants come to the USA because they want a better life and better education, but not for the religious freedom. Asian Indians immigrated to the USA for business purposes in the 19th century; they were allowed to stay here as a result of changes in immigration laws. With increase in Indian immigrants, Hinduism and Sikhism were expanded in the USA even after an increase in discrimination after 9/11. Asian Indians have found immigration to the America desirable for a long time, but after 1965, new immigration laws made the process easier, resulting in a more diverse religious presence.
Through ages, people used to detach themselves from the meaning of common dignity. They have been looking for ways to make themselves look important. They have created classes and used to look down to people who differ from them. People usually involve the idea that one’s own race is more pre-eminent therefore, he has the right to control others. If we take the United States of America as an example, we will find that many Negros has suffered from discrimination. They were deprived from their civil, social, political and educational rights. There were many cases in which African Americans have been discriminated from white people but Martin Luther king tried to stop this racism. During the late 1800s, waves of Asian immigrants from other countries arrived at the United States of America. These countries include China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and India. They believed that coming to the United States would enable them to achieve the “America Dream”, but various laws and discrimination prevented them from achieving the dream. In response to these laws and discrimination, Asian immigrant groups asserted a sense of agency to protect themselves from oncoming discrimination and prejudice. Agency is defined as Asian Immigrants/Americans resistance to the discrimination, unfair laws, prejudice, and low wages. Some agency was successful and others were not, but the main idea was that Asian immigrants were not powerless. They are able to resist through solidarity, strikes, and courts. Different types of agency were employed by different groups, but their goal was ultimately the same, to make it easier to live in the United States. Although Asian immigrants experienced racial discrimination and prejudice, their sense of agency allowed them to unite and survive in the heavily racist United States.
Hinduism is often viewed as a particularly tolerant religion. The lack of a single omniscient God, absence of a prophet, and the open worship of what may look like many Gods may tell a tale of open worship, individuality within religion, and a peaceful, tolerant way of life. Without further examining what Hinduism entails, this may seem like the perfect religion. When the impression of superiority is looked at with a little skepticism, the pretty picture is marred by the deep scratches of discrimination, sexism, and elitism.

India has one of the largest populations of any country. In fact, the current population is estimated to be approximately 1.27 billion people. This means that the population density of India is about 1001 people per square mile (India Population). This extreme overcrowding can lead to serious issues among the people. Many people have seen photos of public transportation passengers dangerously stacked and stuffed on the outside of busses or trains in India. This is just one example of how people get around the overcrowding factor. There are six main ethnic groups that make up India’s large population, two main languages and the most common religion s Hinduism. Karma is an important aspect in the Hindu religion. The whole aspect of “treat people well and you will be treated well” is kind of ironic in India. This is because so many human rights violations are broken every single day by citizens and most commonly, government officials. The government of India is experiencing corruption and their citizens often fall victim. In addition, needless violence is happening all over the country. We should care about India because the government is corrupt, the people are not treated fairly and the public violence rate is very high.
In India, the Dalit’s, or lower class citizens, experience tragic moments in their day-to-day lives. They are discriminated against greatly, but a policy named affirmative action wants to fix this. This proposed law, however, is controversial and is opposed by certain people living in India.
