Discrimination Discrimination is a cruel and unjust act. Unfortunately, discrimination has been around for thousands of years. There are many different parts of discrimination like having a mental or physical disability, religion, and race.
People who have mental or physical disabilities are discriminated against daily. There are examples of this kind of discrimination in Of Mice and Men: That ranch we’re goin’ to is right down there about a quarter mile. We’re gonna go in an’ see the boss. Now, look, I’ll give him the work tickets, but you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing. If he finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won’t get no job, but if he sees ya work before he hears ya talk, we’re set. (329-330)

In the past, if someone had a mental or physical disability, they would send them off to an insane asylum even though they were not dangerous to anyone. No matter the handicap, the person would be institutionalized even if they were not crazy. The Holocaust is an excellent example of discrimination. The Jews and gypsies were exiled to numerous concentration and work camps just because they were viewed as different. During the Holocaust, 6 million of the 11 million people who were killed were Jews. Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, disabled people, and Roma were other groups who died in these dreadful camps. The Nuremberg Laws, excluded Jewish people from public life beginning September 15, 1935. Discriminating because of race was a big part of our society years ago, as well as still today. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there was a lot of discrimination, no matter the skin color like when Lula said, “ You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillun here-they got their church, we got our’n. It is our church, ain’t it, Miss Cal?” (48-52) Judging someone based on the color of their skin is wrong no matter what. Not only are African Americans being discriminated against, but also many Latinos, Muslims, and even Caucasians are faced with racial discrimination. Discrimination does not only happen in the United States, it also happens all around the

An excellent example of this view of the mentally handicapped can be found in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, with the character Lennie. The other characters in this novel such as George and Curley treat Lennie as if he were a child all throughout the novel. George never lets him do any of the talking when t... ... middle of paper ... ... much worse than others, citizens like the mentally ill.
Several characters in the novel Of Mice and Men are presented with additional obstacles throughout the book. Whether because of color, sex, or disabilities, John Steinbeck purposefully did this to illustrate oppression. Of Mice and Men explores the
One of the factors that create an imbalance of power within a society is a person's socioeconomic status. Often people with low socioeconomic status are undervalued in society. This imbalance can cause issues with the feelings of security and confidence. Also opportunities and choices can be limited for some people, but expanded to others. People often identify with roles of different socioeconomic status groups, based on their own socioeconomic status, and this can limit creativity and the potential of groups or individuals. If the world believes that people can go from “rags to riches” in America, then there should be an opportunity for all socioeconomic groups.
When you’re in a position of high authority, it comes with a great sum of power. Having a great deal of control can corrupt and can lead to the abuse of it. Abuse of power is using their power for their own benefit even if it may harm others. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the effects of the abuse shown by Curley and Curley’s wife to the other characters will ultimately lead to a tragic end.
Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
Despite the perception that women are inferior and incompetent, seldom do women withstand this consistent discrimination upon their sex. Under the jurisdiction of men in their families, women are oftentimes restrained from opportunity and development. Curley, a man with an intimidating complexion, forces many, including his flirtatious wife, to succumb to his power. However, he fails to recognize his wife’s rising empowerment as she manipulates men around him into becoming her pawns. John Steinbeck’s usage of Curley’s wife in the novel Of Mice and Men delineates the desire of women to eliminate the over dominance of men through deceit in exchange for their own power.
Overall discrimination is an awful thing. It is like a STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you don’t watch out. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. They allow for people to have control of them and walk all over them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
Conflict, by definition, is a back and forth struggle between two opposing forces. In the literary work, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, it is clear, the protagonist, George Milton, undergoes many conflicts that lead to the novel’s overall purpose. Steinbeck weaves together George’s conflicts with others, himself, and with society to illustrate what the true meaning of friendship is.
Outcasts are commonly given a negative connotation, but in reality, they are not always awful people. Throughout Of Mice and Men, the main theme is loneliness and is the main focus in all of the symbols. In “The Rules of the Game”, Waverly is exposed to her mother’s Chinese roots and is pressured into living her life according to them. During “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”, the characters are given obstacles and kicked out of their own homes, which causes a theme of depression and solitude. In these stories, all three characters are portrayed as an outcast because of people ‘judging them by their cover’.
Discrimination of the Disabled Disability is a vague term that describes the consequence of an impairment that may be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, or developmental. Douglas Baynton a professor at the university of Iowa argues that “allegations of disability are at the heart of discrimination against a wide range of people: women, people of color, and immigrants.” Social inequality is prevalent issue that arose in the mid-20th century. Movements such as the Disability Rights Movement in the 1960’s brought information about unknown topics to light, and gave importance to minority groups. Due to the rise of social movements such as the Disability Rights movement the United States became more accepting of minority groups over
It is the year 2018 and women are finally being treated fairly. We are able to get almost any job we want, get and education, and finally get the respect we deserve, but things were not always like this. Looking back in our nation's history, we can see that women have not always been treated this way and have had to fight just to be respected. Although there are many books we could reference about the unfair treatment of women, one book that will help you understand just how unfairly women were treated is Of Mice and Men.
They shouldn't be treated or seen different. During the late 1800’s people with disabilities were seen as these people who are not wanted in the society. People didn't expect them for who they are. According to http://paul-burtner.dental.ufl.edu ”During the 1800s, people with disabilities were considered meager, tragic, pitiful individuals unfit and unable to contribute to society, except to serve as ridiculed objects of entertainment in circuses and exhibitions. They were assumed to be abnormal and feeble-minded, and numerous persons were forced to undergo sterilization.”
...eglected social issues in recent history (Barlow). People with disabilities often face societal barriers and disability evokes negative perceptions and discrimination in society. As a result of the stigma associated with disability, persons with disabilities are generally excluded from education, employment, and community life which deprives them of opportunities essential to their social development, health and well-being (Stefan). It is such barriers and discrimination that actually set people apart from society, in many cases making them a burden to the community. The ideas and concepts of equality and full participation for persons with disabilities have been developed very far on paper, but not in reality (Wallace). The government can make numerous laws against discrimination, but this does not change the way that people with disabilities are judged in society.
