Discrimination Discrimination is when someone is treated unfairly based on sex, race, religion, or age. The meaning of this word goes deeper and I’m going to break it down. Imagine a time when Discrimination was being used, how do you think it made the victim feel? I’m going to explain some instances where discrimination is being used. One example of Discrimination is in the novel Of Mice and Men. This novel takes place in the 1930’s, so men basically had the upper hand. Of Mice and Men only has one female character and she is never named, but is referred to as Curley’s wife. In the book, colored people are treated wrong and unfairly. Some people can’t realize that everybody is equal, it doesn’t matter what color they are. Unfortunately that’s how this country is nowadays, everybody does their own thing and doesn’t care about anyone else. At least that holds true for some people, not all. My last example of discrimination is the Holocaust. The Holocaust is an example of discrimination because millions of Jews were killed because of their religion. Adolf Hitler was a German leader at the time and he is the one that wanted Jews to be put in concentration camps to later die. Millions of people lost their lives for believing in something that other people didn’t, that’s a world I don’t want to live in. Luckily, America has improved a lot since the 1930’s, but never forget that this tragedy did actually happen and a lot of people were very unlucky. Discrimination is when someone is judging somebody else based on their religion, sex, race, or age. I have given three examples such as the novel Of Mice and Men, The Help, and the Holocaust. Each of these examples have moments of discrimination whether it is racist, sexist, or shaming a religion.
