Discrimination Discrimination is when someone is treated unfairly based on sex, race, religion, or age. The meaning of this word goes deeper and I’m going to break it down. Imagine a time when Discrimination was being used, how do you think it made the victim feel? I’m going to explain some instances where discrimination is being used. One example of Discrimination is in the novel Of Mice and Men. This novel takes place in the 1930’s, so men basically had the upper hand. Of Mice and Men only has one female character and she is never named, but is referred to as Curley’s wife. The book shows sex discrimination because she is described as a pretty, flirty girl who only cares about how she looks and rather she has a man by her side. Another …show more content…
In the book, colored people are treated wrong and unfairly. Some people can’t realize that everybody is equal, it doesn’t matter what color they are. Unfortunately that’s how this country is nowadays, everybody does their own thing and doesn’t care about anyone else. At least that holds true for some people, not all. My last example of discrimination is the Holocaust. The Holocaust is an example of discrimination because millions of Jews were killed because of their religion. Adolf Hitler was a German leader at the time and he is the one that wanted Jews to be put in concentration camps to later die. Millions of people lost their lives for believing in something that other people didn’t, that’s a world I don’t want to live in. Luckily, America has improved a lot since the 1930’s, but never forget that this tragedy did actually happen and a lot of people were very unlucky. Discrimination is when someone is judging somebody else based on their religion, sex, race, or age. I have given three examples such as the novel Of Mice and Men, The Help, and the Holocaust. Each of these examples have moments of discrimination whether it is racist, sexist, or shaming a religion. Discrimination is way more than a definition in the dictionary, it can hurt people and make them feel
Several characters in the novel Of Mice and Men are presented with additional obstacles throughout the book. Whether because of color, sex, or disabilities, John Steinbeck purposefully did this to illustrate oppression. Of Mice and Men explores the
Discrimination is known as unjust treatment of a particular group. In The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, she discusses stereotypes and cliches (Ericsson 478). Discrimination is often a stereotypical device
Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
Despite the perception that women are inferior and incompetent, seldom do women withstand this consistent discrimination upon their sex. Under the jurisdiction of men in their families, women are oftentimes restrained from opportunity and development. Curley, a man with an intimidating complexion, forces many, including his flirtatious wife, to succumb to his power. However, he fails to recognize his wife’s rising empowerment as she manipulates men around him into becoming her pawns. John Steinbeck’s usage of Curley’s wife in the novel Of Mice and Men delineates the desire of women to eliminate the over dominance of men through deceit in exchange for their own power.
Racism, which is an important aspect of Of Mice and Men, exhibits the historical value conveyed in the novel. The Great Depression is a monumental facet used in this novel to alter the way the characters behaved. A character from the novel who goes by the name Crooks is greatly impacted by the Great Depression because he is a black man living and working among men who are white. Due to his skin tone, Crooks is treated differently than all of the other workers. Consequently he is forced to live by himself and not interact with the white men. As soon as Lennie showed any interest in him, Crooks grew dreadfully sensitive and overprotective of all of his rights and belongings, he said to Lennie, “Well, I got a right to have a light. You go
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the ground of race, age, or sex. In book of Mice and Men back in history many kind of people are discriminated against and the kind of discrimination gets harsh on 3 people. Discrimination affect characters in of Mice and Men through Crooks being Ignored and isolated from people, Curley 's wife not being looked as equal as the other people, and Lennie being looked as not a normal person.
Many people know what prejudice and discrimination are, but some of us do not. Prejudice is known as the attitude which includes behavioral, cognitive and affective. This attitude is incorrect and is not justified because it usually deals with negative thoughts of a person. These thoughts can be based on any reasons, for example, it could be because of their social class, race, gender, sexuality, or anything else. Discriminitation on the other hand, is very similar, but involves taking action because of those thoughts. There have been many different types of discrimination, but the main one's are racial, age, and gender discrimination.
Despite the numerous laws put into place to try and avoid racism, sexism, and ageism, several men and women are still victims of discrimination. These prejudicial judgements are made everyday towards people who were born that way. Many of these unfair judgements are also seen in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In this compelling novel, Curley’s wife was discriminated against because she was a woman, and men saw her as a worthless person. Also, Crooks is treated unfairly because of his race, and the ranchers believe they are superior because they are white. Another character faced with discriminated is Candy. He is singled out for being an elder, and society therefore views him as being a waste of space. These specific types of men and women
“Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons” (Schaefer 35). Discrimination differs from prejudice as it refers to the behavior or action usually based on prejudice rather than just thoughts.
Discrimination can be defined as the unequal treatment of equal groups in workplace situations such as engagement, compensation, and promotion. There are two key notions of discrimination in relation to a workplace context;
Throughout Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck displays how isolation through sexism and racism causes one to crave attention, and he helps the reader to understand the problems in society about racism and sexism through portraying Curley’s Wife and Crooks both craving attention in their own ways and experiencing various setbacks.
Discrimination or prejudice is a vital subject in sociology. This owes to the reality that understanding how prejudice and discrimination affects the society enables sociologists to build a favorable living environment for the entire humanity. What is the meaning of these two words? The term prejudice is defined as an incorrect or unjustified attitude towards someone based on a his/her social group while discrimination is the negative treatment of an individual because he/she belongs to a specific social group. Some of the causes of prejudice include race, ethnicity, and gender.
Unfortunately due to our past history, discrimination had been among us from since decades. Discrimination and prejudice would probably be among us until the end of the world. Prejudice and discrimination is an action that treats people unfairly because of their membership in a particular social group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather on that individual. It is an unfair treatment to a person, racial group, and minority. It is an action based on prejudice.
Discrimination is a feasible method of making decisions in life based on the group, class, or category to which a person belongs to. “In an ideal world, people would be equal in rights, opportunities, and responsibilities, despite their race or gender. In the world we live in, however, we constantly face all kinds of neglect based on different attributes.” When one hears the word discrimination, the first thought that comes to mind is racial discrimination. In fact, it does not solely have to be racial discrimination.
Discrimination is defined as is judgement of a group based on the color, race, and an ethnic. It is noting of characteristics of a given subject, and making a considered judgment based on the information available.
