Coming from English 1010 I thought I was done learning and growing as a writer, but I was able to further develop my English skills in new ways by exploring my writing ecology. I came into this class having an understanding of how to format different essays, what Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are, and felt that I had a strong understanding of discourse communities. This semester I was able to further expand and really focus on my community discourses I am a part of. I was also able to demonstrate that I use writing and reading in my discourse community I am in. Through the semester of Winter 2016, I was assigned many essays, reflections, projects and journals. These are artifacts that demonstrate my growth in my course learning outcomes. The
In the article “The Concept of Discourse Community” John Swales touches a few very important main ideas about what discourse community really is. I found it to be refreshing that he is able to express his feelings how he does in this article. Swales talks about discourse community and how our world today really isn 't that good at being apart of them. He discusses the six qualities or characteristics of being apart of a discourse community. You have to be active in communicating and wanting to be apart of that community and if you 're not that type of person than maybe it 's not your thing.
To me, a soccer team is the perfect example of a discourse community. I have played soccer all my life and I started playing competitively for St Ignatius College Prep School. I played for the junior varsity team and then later as I learned more about the game started playing for the varsity team.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
As of 2013, there are over 2.5 billion worldwide Internet users and the number is growing every year. People are spending more and more time on the Internet vs. watching TV or reading a newspaper. The amount of information on the Internet is vastly increasing and websites like “reddit” are aiming to help make finding relevant news easier. Basically, reddit is as if a gateway to everything interesting that is going on in the world.
A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. My discourse community is the joplin crusaders I think this is a good discourse community because I think it pretty much gives the definition of what a discourse community is. Wikipedia defines a discourse community as a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. Linguist John Swales defined discourse communities as "groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. I think that the joplin crusaders have all of these characteristics to be a good discourse community to talk about in this essay.
According to Porter, “A ‘discourse community’ is a group of individuals bound by a common interest who communicate through approved channels and whose discourse is regulated. A discourse community shares assumptions about what objects are appropriate for examination and discussion, what constitutes ‘evidence’ and ‘validity’ and what formal conventions are followed (38-39).” These five texts collectively constitute a community of discourse through their application of common language norms, characteristics, patterns and rhetorical strategies. All of the authors are writing about corresponding ideas and discussing their identical goals; the prevalence of gender inequality in the legal profession and the unjust consequences derived from it. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
Genre is very important when it comes to discourse communities. Genre serves the convention of discourse communities and it the means of communication that achieve the proposes of a particular discourse community. The discourse community in which will be discussed is Moldovian Baptist Church or MBC. From MBC three main genres of the discourse community will be analyzed and show how those conventions and language elements serve the MBC as a discourse community and achieve its main purpose. MBC is a discourse community that uses MBC choir, sermon, and youth to achieve the goals and proposes of MBC through the uses of language elements.
A political science major is the main discourse community I am apart of. It is a community that consists of students studying political science through a four-year bachelor’s program at the University of New Mexico. Almost anyone interested in being a part of this community is capable of joining. This guide goes in depth about what this discourse community is about. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
Upon acceptance to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I knew not the circumstances to come my way: I did not understand what adversities would appear to me unsuspectingly. Furthermore, I faced these adversities and I had confidence they would inspire growth. Adversity in college also presented itself in this English course by challenging my identity as a writer in the same way that UAB has challenged my identity as a person and a student. When enrolling to UAB, I knew how to write a thesis statement and how to use MLA, but this course helped me develop and hone my skills in an academic setting. This course taught me how to make two-prong thesis statements in a conflicting viewpoint paper and focused on using my rhetorical skills instead of writing on symbolism as I did for the majority of high school. Discourse 300 this semester taught me a lot about communities that I’m personally involved in and communities that I’m interested in. It also allowed for me to explore and learn about communities I never would have known about or looked into through peer speeches and papers. This course also refreshed my memory on how to conduct academic research effectively and how to peer review. This was by far the most advanced discourse class I have taken and I believe I learned quite a bit about myself and discourse as a whole. This course really made me dig deep into communities and get to the core.
