There is no doubt that global warming will not stop anytime soon as carbon has a life of around 100 years and more potent greenhouse gases have even longer lifespan. To counter this is the idea of climate engineering. Climate engineering can be as common sense as planting forests, changes in land use to reflective satellites. The idea of climate engineering is controversial as one of the articles in this paper describes it as “hubris” that we can predict and change the global climate to our liking (Meyer, Uhle, 2015). The best place to start is with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) because unlike the solar radiation management (SRM) it is the only true long term solution to global warming. The most basic and long term CDR plans are to plant …show more content…
The most likely used plan would be releasing large amounts of aerosols into the stratosphere and mesosphere which would cause global cooling by increasing the albedo of clouds and moisture (Ming, et al, 2014). The benefits of this plan is that it would be cost effective, immediate and mimics a natural process . It is estimated that one kilogram of sulfate aerosol can upset the warming effect of several hundred thousand kilograms of CO2. The downsides are that it does not address greenhouse gases, causes atmospheric ozone depletion, and decreased precipitation in the Northern Hemisphere and would have to be applied every 2-4 years. The effects are already studied in volcano eruptions which cause a year or two of global cooling and the effects are not permanent. We already have all the technology to do this and the capability to project its effects modeled after volcano eruptions (Ming, et al, 2014; Caldeira, Keith, 2010; Liu, Chen, 2015). Another SRM method is more science fiction, satellites would be launched into space where they would reflect solar radiation. This would be immediate cooling but would be in the future as we do not have the technology for it. Like releasing aerosols, cloud whitening would increase the albedo of clouds and is already being study in the field as ships create cleaner whiter clouds …show more content…
China has demonstrated the ability to change the weather despite the argument that it is “hubris” to think that it’s impossible to predict and change weather. It is true that modeling may not be accurate and there will be unintended consequences but it is in the future’s best interest that we still research how to better climate engineering. The attitude that we can ignore the root cause of global warming, greenhouse gases, and rely on fast acting climate engineering is very hubris in our role on earth and our abilities. It is important to understand that all systems are connected and weighing the risks before dumping chemicals into the the ocean or atmosphere is critical (Meyer, Uhle, 2016). With these “solutions” things such as ocean acidification and rising GHGs are not addressed and with the immediate effects of climate engineering may go unaddressed leaving the problem worst for future
Peter Eisenberger, the cofounder of Global Thermostat claimed that the idea of the Global Thermostat here is to divert the carbon in the atmosphere into other forms or process where it will not damage our environment. The first thing that we can do is to capture the CO2 from the air then we can use it for things that will not leave any carbon footprint such as fire extinguisher, soda, and dry ice. We can also use CO2 to help the oil mining by squeezing oil from underground. We can also produce a biofuel and biochar we both have carbon negative source of
Thesis Statement: Due to the limitations of global climate models used as predictors for future calamitous climate changes and the lack of fact-based knowledge regarding the climate, we should avoid geoengineering because of the unknown and possibly devastating consequences.
Global warming is a problem that is often overlooked by many and is hindered among other problems that require immediate actions. Over the last 136 years the temperature in earth has increased 1.7°¬¬¬F. Although an increase of 1.7°¬¬¬F over 136 years may not seem like a lot but humans are destroying the earth at a faster rate than ever before. Human omissions are roughly equal to 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs exploding across the planet every second leaving future generations of human in jeopardy. With warmer climate comes with catastrophic outcomes like drought, which can destabilize the food sources on earth leaving millions of people hungry. Widespread extinction of most species on earth and the melting of polar ice caps can raise the sea level leaving most of the world’s coastal cities under water. This cannot happen overnight but if humans keep omitting at the current rate the outcome of climate change will become prominent
Global Warming, much of what does or does not happen forty years from now, rests on our actions or inactions taken between now and then. The crucial question is whether we should pour all our resources into mitigation – reducing our carbon emissions. According to scientists who study the climate, there are other environmental problems; “we now face a global crisis in land use and agriculture that could undermine the health, security, and sustainability of our civilization”. Rather than worry too much about emissions, we should accept the world is going to get warmer anyway and adapt to global warming by building better flood defenses and developing drought-resistant crops. We cannot dispute that automobiles, factories, and power plants, displace an unprecedented twenty tons of carbon monoxide per person per year.
How would you like to live in a home that is beginning to fall apart, but only to go on about your day and continue to neglect it until it all comes crashing down? Humans and animals share this beautiful planet that we call home. But this beautiful home of ours is being regularly and increasingly torn apart by our own ignorant actions. These actions of ours have begun to unravel the very world in which we live, causing a self-inflicted crisis known as Global Climate Change. Global Climate Change is a severe dilemma, and it is continuously becoming more evident to the world’s population that climate change is being caused by changes in the reflectivity of earth’s atmosphere and surface, the ever changing variations of energy from the sun reaching the earth, and the daunting increase in greenhouse gasses.
One of the most compelling and difficult environmental problems society faces today is climate change. People do not realize how much the environment has changed for the worse in the last ten years, until they are told that the last two decades of the 20th century have been the hottest in the last 400 years, according to climate studies (Conserve Energy Future). Today, the carbon dioxide levels have reached 396.81 parts per million (ppm). “Carbon dioxide (CO2) has also increased over the last 100 years-- from about 300 ppm to 370 ppm. Interestingly, the majority of these additions have occurred in the last 50 years, when temperature increases have been the slowest” (geocraft).
Our world is always changing, so is our climate. Some changes are apparent, others not so much. Climate change is an important issue of concern in the twenty-first century. Environment, if it changes at all, evolves so slowly that the difference cannot be seen in a human lifetime (Wearth, 2014). Mostly all scientists predicted that it would take thousands of years for the planet to warm up due to emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels called greenhouse gases. But in the past 200 years, things began to change. The rate and the amount of warming that is happening on this planet are unprecedented. Wearth says, “People did not grasp the prodigious fact that both population and industrialization were exploding in a pattern of exponential
One way to decrease global warming includes simply turning off lights and gadgets after use. Some electronics use more power off then on. If you're using more power than necessary, power plants are releasing more CO2. than necessary. Using a bus or even a bike can decrease climate change, if one is able, moving closer to work is equally efficient. On a larger scale, tropical deforestation not only destroys ecosystems it is also responsible for 30% of the world's heat trapping emissions. If we decrease tropical deforestation, climate change would decrease as
Tong’s concern is that if the atmospheric temperature goes on increasing just like now, soon his country will submerge in water in the near future. He calls for a joint rapid action among world countries to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
Prevent dangerous climate change by phasing out fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas) and replacing them with clean renewable energy such as solar.
Global warming is an extremely important and troubling aspect of the world’s current situation. This is due to the fact that the majority of the world’s energy production is from non-renewable energy sources, which are energy sources that either can not be naturally replenished or require thousands of years to be restored. Based on our current energy usage growth rates, there are an estimated 100 years left before our natural resource reserves are exhausted. (Non Renewable Natural Resources: How Much Is Left, Environmental Thinker) China alone consumes nearly as much coal as the combined usage of coal from the rest of the world. (US Energy Information Administration, China Consumes Nearly as Much Coal as the Rest of the World Combined) There is visible evidence of this happening with the increasing pollution levels. Carbon Dioxide and Methane pollution levels in the world reached a record high in 2012 and are 260% higher than the pre-industrial levels. (UN: CO2 Pollution Levels at a Record High, John Heilprin) Converting our world into a more renewable energy dependent society is the most advantageous and likely method for preserving our dwindling fossil fuel supply while also protecting the world that we call home.
The time of refusing to acknowledge climate change has come to an end. Every day there are a growing number of institutions, governments and private companies which recognize the socioeconomic risks that climate change poses on the future. As scientific research confirms the need for immediate action with regards to climate change, scientists and politicians alike are conflicted at what is the next best step forward. One proposal is sulfate aerosol injection into the stratosphere, a type of geoengineering which reflects solar radiation back into space and reduces the temperature of the Earth . Supporters argue that this is the most cost efficient and rapid method to cool the Earth. Meanwhile, critics of this Solar Radiation
Many climate scientists, researchers, and environmentalists are expressing concerns about shifts in the overall climate of the earth. It is believed that a dramatically dangerous warming is taking place in the overall global climate, a problem that is referred to as "global warming”. Global warming is the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of Earth’s climate system. This temperature rise is due to the damaging effects of deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. It is our responsibility to preserve our planet and our way of living but in order to do that we need to act now. If we continue to destroy the planet with no regard as to how serious this matter is there could be several negative effects to us as human being and other living thing on Earth. This is why global warming is truly a global issue and needs to be tackled collectively. We must to act now in order to reduce the dangerous levels of carbon dioxide emissions and we must to work together.
As we approach the future we are faced with many global problems. Most of these problems arise because we have caused them ourselves. We need to face these problems and find a solution. Global warming, although most often overlooked in importance, is a crucial problem of the future directly related to human activities. Global warming is caused by gases humans release into the atmosphere called anthropogenic gases and by deforestation. Anthropogenic gases include carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrofl...
Global warming has become on of the most controversial issues in the media today. While most of the Western world countries have generally accepted the premise that man's chemical emissions in the atmosphere can and are affected by the world’s climate patterns, in the United States, the issue has become so politicized with many republicans challenging the science behind the theory. Global warming is a greenhouse effect whereby gases are trapped on the earth’s surface causing it to heat up (Maslin 14). It is based on the worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by human beings through their activities since the 1880,s. In addition, global warming is not only caused by human activities only but also through climate changes in solar radiance. The problem is that, humans continue to contribute to the global warming phenomenon. All citizens should work in reducing human activities that cause global warming and also support the development of nuclear power. Scientists deem that, global warming is mainly caused by human activities which accelerate the natural process by creating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities have become a great contribution to the greenhouse effect and this means that climate changes are inevitable. They further argue that, if these activities continue and are not reduced, it will lead to more trapping of energy radiated from the earth and this will likely lead to extreme weather and global warming. Global warming should be at reduced levels or else, it will be catastrophic.
