Step 1: As a surgical technologist anesthesia is a part of the career field you must become very comfortable and familiar with. According to WebMD, anesthesia is "a way to control pain during a surgery or procedure by using medicine called anesthetics." There are three main types of anesthesia, each having their own requirements before they can be used on a patient. The first type of anesthetic is local anesthesia which will only numb a small portion of the body during minor procedures. This type of anesthesia is injected directly to the surgical site to block any pain and patients are normally conscious during the procedure. These specialty doctors are responsible for the well-being of patients before, during and after a surgical procedure has been done. They also play a crucial role in the evaluation process of a patients which brings the importance of how they can be an effected party. One might think the anesthesiologist is not impacted by potential complications, but they are the person in charge of the Anesthesia Care Team. This team is solely responsible for the monitoring and safety of patients while under the influence of anesthetics. In the event a patient does have a severe complication to the anesthesia administered, this could result in the start of a lawsuit which could result in the loss of a medical license. The journal goes into detail on a study that was conducted in Denmark on 221 set of twins to determine if there was a significant difference, if any, on the long-term cognitive function of the brain in the twins. It was determined "there is no high quality evidence to support a significant risk of long-term cognitive decline after major surgery in the elderly."
