For this paper, I chose to take the Disability Implicit Association test and Race IAT test. For the Disability test I pretty much categorized good and bad words with images that were related to a disabled or abled person. It was very confusing because I kept getting the E and I mixed up. Before I took the IAT test, I thought it would be easier and I thought it would just ask me questions about disabilities and what I think about it. I really did not know what to expect except for that. I did not have much information about this test or how it was going to go so I was very confused. This test basically started off asking me questions beforehand and after. After I had answered the questions it showed me pictures of a black person and a white person. When the pictures popped up you had to either press the E or I key for black and white. This test was hard throughout the whole time and I had a lot of trouble categorizing black people and white people with good and bad but when I kept going it only got harder and harder. It got really confusing and I kept pressing the wrong keys. It made me realize that when bad is on black people it made it a lot easier. That makes me feel awful about it but personally I believe that over the years with people targeting black people it just made me think of them as bad but I do not believe that. I believe everyone is equally bad or good. At the end I got my results. My result was a moderate automatic preference for white people over black people. I was really surprised at that result. It was not what I expected at all. I do not feel like I prefer white over black people. I feel like I treat everyone equally and view everyone the same. Overall, these test were very interesting and it made me really think of my results and why I got it. I thought this was a really cool experience and even though it gave me a headache it is definitely something to learn
This is due to what we have been spoon fed by the media, I don 't agree or like how people of color and gender are stereotyped but this article made me much more aware of how the media still has such an enormous impact on our racial decision. The Department of Education states that an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is an academic opportunity for parents, teachers, administrators and human services personnel to provide assistance to students with disabilities. Individualized Education Programs are written plans that state specific learning goals and designate educational services that are designed to meet a student’s individual needs.
After taking the test the results said that I was little to no automatic preference between African American and European American. This was very shocking to me due to the fact that I see racial actions and comments that are directed to my family and I. Due to the politics and other issues, my attitude has become jagged. I have started to speak my mind right or wrong about the unfairness that I encounter. This really bothers me when it is directed to my children, especially when it comes to sports. I feel that they should not have to deal with this because I did not have to. Having stated all of this and my test results basically concluded that I was neutral, is questionable. Back in the early 1800’s, the color of one’s skin mattered amongst African Americans and Caucasian people. There was infidelity between the Caucasian slave owners and the African American slaves. Of course, the outcome of that produced a fairer toned child. In most cases the child could pass as white. The mixed toned kids got to be inside doing housework, while the dark Negroes worked in the fields, under extraneous work conditions,”their dark-toned peers toiled in the fields”(Maxwell). From the early 1800’s to modern day, there is controversy that light or bi-racial African Americans are better than dark colored African Americans. African Americans had to go through tests to see if they were able to receive priviledges that white people received,”light-skinned African Amerians receive special priviledges based off of their skin shade”(Maxwell). If an African American did not receive the priviledges similar to white people then they would try to change themselves to fit in,”African Americans are using bleaching creams so that they can make their skin lighter , just to achieve the standard beauty”(Brooke). As much as one will not one to discuss this topic, statistics shows how people are more lenient towards light and fair skin tones.Light oor fair coloredAmericans that poseess Caucasian features are prefiebly preffered.
Taking an Implicit association test may not be something that we would want to base any serious decisions off of; it is a useful tool in being able to learn about ourselves better. By being made aware that we may unconsciously hold views that we are not proud of, we can inoculate ourselves and make a personal change for the better.
We classify one another in four or five classes based on features and judge one another’s internal abilities based on race (Adelman and Herbes-Sommers 2003). We are quick to simplify the complexity of an individual based on physical features and what we assume to be correct. As stated in episode one, there is nothing biological to justify race (Adelman and Herbes-Sommers 2003). There is no chromosome or trait that can be singled out to say a group or a race is better at any particular activity. But, as a society we want to use and manipulate science to say one race is superior. The same ‘science’ that proves positive qualities in the dominate race, is used to diminish the equity in the minorities time and hard work in their craft. African Americans are overall known to excel at athletics. White Americans wanted to link race to athletic ability (Adelman and Herbes-Sommers 2003). Those in power, the dominate race, want to demean the hard work of an individual in a minority race. The majorities say there is a certain trait that allows ‘their kind’ to be good at a particular activity, not that the individually worked hard and put in the rigorous hours to be successful.
It may seem ridiculous that we make decisions based on thoughts that we do not even know we are having, but it is certainly true. This test has really opened my eyes to the fact that although I considered myself very open-minded, even I have a slight bias in some regards. The most important lesson from this is that awareness is the key, and these biases will forever be engrained in our subconscious if we do not take the time to face them. Although I found this a tough pill to swallow, I and the people I meet henceforth will benefit from the knowledge I have gained
The purpose of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 was to protect the civil rights of disabled Americans, as well as put an end to discrimination, and to make adjustments to better accommodate the disabled. When presented to Congress, the Act surpassed party lines and gained support and popularity very quickly. While in theory the ADA seems revolutionary and helpful; in practice it presents the disabled with numerous problems, most of these arise in the form of red tape.
Throughout history, and in today’s society, race has been a debated topic. Even today the question about whether race influences intelligence, athletic ability, and creativeness is still discussed. Through scientific research it is known that race contributes nothing to how a person thinks, feels, or acts and that is it society that creates these standards. When looking into the past there was much controversy about blacks and their self worth. According to the Thomas Jefferson’s article “Notes on the State of Virginia” blacks and whites are naturally different and fixed by nature. In other words blacks are naturally not as intelligent as whites, but today’s knowledge argues, and proves, otherwise. There is also argument about the possibility that blacks are inferior to whites because of their environment. In the movie “Race, the Power of Illusion” teenagers of many different races and ethnic backgrounds were tested to determine how different they really are from one another. In the end, everyone finds out they may not be as different as originally thought. Society as a whole needs to realize we, as Americans, are more alike than we think. If everyone can get over skin color as a classification, then society will have overcome a huge barrier and the future for equality will become clearer.
The first Disability Act went into effect in 1973 and it helped to end discrimination of those that have a disability. The Act was modeled based on laws that previously helped to end discrimination based on race, ethnic origin and sex. . The Disability rights act helped to give those with disabilities a chance to live independently and not have to depend on others to take care of them like in the past. Those with disabilities could no longer be turned down for employment, housing, public accommodations, education, transportation, communication, recreation, institutionalization, health services, voting, and access to public services.

Now, children with intellectual disabilities are respected, and cared for just like anyone else. This was not true prior to the mid 19th century. People and doctors feared them and they were often ignored. As time continued throughout history things changed for the better. Some people may have believed that someone either had an intellectual disability or not, but this is not true. There are different levels to it. Children with an intellectual disability can and do attend regular schools with a little extra help, but they do experience emotional and behavior problem along the way. Not all causes for intellectual disabilities can be found, but there are a few known ones. With all of this said, there are ways to prevent intellectual dishabilles and ways to treat it as well.

People with disabilities are still people, they are people with hearts and they are actual physical beings; people with disabilities do their best to live every day to their fullest, yet that is still not enough for others. I feel like as a whole, humans are generally uncomfortable with people who have disabilities. Let’s think of it this way, people live their life every day in their normal lives and then they come across a person with a disability and suddenly their life is interrupted, like it is such a barrier in their flow of life to come across someone different from themselves.
