The song I chose to analyze is “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, which includes personification, similes, and idioms to express the theme of the good old days and the life of countrymen in the South who grew up loving the lifestyle. The “Dirt Road Anthem” is about the times that Jason Aldean had while living in the country, and regrets leaving all the good times there. This song and many other country songs use many literary devices to express the lives they had, and “Dirt Road Anthem” is no exception. Jason Aldean uses personification in several cases to elevate the reading experience and make actions more eye-catching. Personification is used to add human characteristics to inanimate objects and make them “life-like”. Within the first few lines of the song, Jason is talking about driving in his truck, saying that there’s, “Smoke rollin’ out the window”, and in the same scene, he also has, “an ice cold beer sittin’ in the console”. …show more content…

This also adds a feeling to each, such as the smoke rolling, which could mean a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust. The ice-cold beer could show that it's just sitting there and adds to the feeling of being at ease as if the bottle is relaxing in the console. The previous line in the song also uses a literary device and adds a simile, which is a comparison of two unlike items using like or as. While in his truck, Jason Aldean says that he is, “Laid back swervin’ like I’m George Jones”. This comparison is very intriguing, for many reasons.
