Imperialism in general:
Imperialism occurs when an industrialized country overpowers a less developed country and takes control over their country economically, socially, and politically without having regards to how it may affect the country and its people. The country that is taken over then becomes a colony. A colony is a territory or piece of land directly governed by a foreign power. There are different ways of governing a colony and many of those methods were implemented in order to control the country that was taken over. European rulers developed methods of managing the colonized countries, which included direct and indirect control, as well as other methods within those two controls.

These foreign officials are usually the people that colonized the country in the first place. No self-control was given to the natives, as the imperialized countries believed they could not manage to run their own country. This lead to racism, as the Europeans believed they were the superior race and that they could decide how the country should be run instead of the natives. Within direct control, there is also paternalism in which they govern in a parental way, meaning the colony receives no rights, but are provided for their needs. This relates to how parents raise their children to a certain age, as children cannot do what they want, but are provided with food, shelter, etc. Assimilation was also part of direct control and it was the idea that in time, local populations would adopt the culture of their ruler and become like them, as if being influenced. This means that instead of only having foreign officials, the natives also play apart. This rule mainly relied on existing political rulers and the local officials handled a lot of the daily management that couldn’t be done by the foreign officials. In Africa, some councils would train the local leaders in the British method of government so that in time, the natives would learn how to govern itself.
Other control includes a protectorate which has its own government, but is still under control of another country, therefore it is like a combination of indirect and direct. There is also the sphere of influence which is when another country controls the production of certain products the country makes, therefore it only has an economic control.
