a. What is the “diploma mill”? What can employers specifically do to prevent employment applicants from being hired with a “degree” from a diploma mill? Why is employee socialization important? Diploma mills is an organization or institution that grants fake degrees for a fee. Taking online classes and not knowing whether the institution is real or not can cause you to have a phony degree. They can also create a toll-free number to the institution, so the employer’s calling can verify that the degree is true. If you think you’re getting a degree without doing any course work, then you most likely are dealing with diploma mills. Be careful of getting into a scam of getting a quick and easy degree. (Purpura, Pg. 146) Employers can do a better
The third legal issue I chose was Mills vs The Board of Education of The District of Columbia. In 1972 this case was brought to the courts representing seven children, as well as nearly 18,000 other students in the District of Columbia area. These children were classified as having behavioral, intellectual, and emotional disabilities, as well as hyperactivity. All of these children were denied an educational services and public education by being excluded, suspended, expelled, reassigned, and transferred. They were denied based solely on their disability, and without due process. This case was the other of the two that laid the ground work for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to be passed.

Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed that all American citizens need to be educated so that they may exercise their rights. He saw public education as essential to a democracy. One proposal he made for public education would guarantee that all children could attend public schools for three years. However, much like other early school reforms, this proposal received much rejection and was never brought into being. Despite this rejection, Jefferson still believed that America needed public education. Eventually, he opened the University of Virginia. Even though his bills and proposals to benefit public education never saw the light of day, he still made many contributions to public education by providing the foundation on how a democracy should handle educating its
In “Should the Obama Generation Drop Out?” Charles Murray talks about how a college degree now days, is looked at higher than it should be when it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job. Most jobs that pay over minimum wage will require you to have a college degree, making it very difficult for people that either can’t afford it or do not believe in it, to get a reliable well paying job. Like Barack Obama said “It’s what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it”(Murray 97); a large amount of people have the skills for a job but do not have the degree to show for, making them not qualified for the job. Companies will not even give you an interview if your resume does not have any type of degree on it. That situation makes life very unfair for multiple individuals. There should be some kind of certification test for applicant to take to see if he or she meets the skills needed for the job. The benefits of discarding the bachelor’s degree as a job qualification would be huge for both employers and job applicants. Therefo...
For the past few decades, there have been ongoing discussions involving the preferred educational level for nurses entering the field of healthcare. Two routes can be taken to entering the field: one can finish a two-year program and obtain their associate or add two years and get their baccalaureate instead. There are differences, albeit minor ones, between nurses prepared at the associate degree level versus those prepared at the baccalaureate level. However, an increase in technological advances in nursing field, and a higher demand for patient care has recently sparked the discussion of whether or not it is beneficial for nurses to further their education and obtain a baccalaureate degree or even a master’s degree as the case may be.
Mr. Henry states that in order for the job market to sustain ample job opportunities for university graduates, those chosen should meet strict educational standards early in the education process. Without these measures, he believes, the American education system will continue to degrade as everyone will become equal, with none terrible and more importantly, none great. Mr. Henry asserts his belief that in a watered down workplace, complacency is only eclipsed by averageness. For an individual to progress and excel through college, it takes a certain measure of drive to achieve the necessary academic quality. This drive requires its recipient to work harder and achieve better grades, more income...
Through her newspaper article,Claire Cain Miller makes the argument that social skills are crucial when it comes to acquiring a job. Miller claims that jobs that require socializing and skills, have fared best when comes to salary and employment. She explains that these jobs belong to doctors, engineers, lawyers and child-care workers. Any field that involves socializing and some type of skill is thriving, the reverse is happening for jobs that only require skill like those held by bookkeepers, bank tellers and certain types of engineers. It is these jobs that have performed worst in employment growth in recent years. Miller also goes over the importance of schools implementing social skills courses in their education. She believes that with
If more people went to college, and less went the vocational route, jobs will take a momentous hit. Today, companies will not even touch an application that does not include a Bachelor’s Degree; even if the Bachelor’s Degree has nothing to do with the job being applied for. Attention is not given to whether the hopeful applicant qualifies for the job; all that matters is that the applicant has a Bachelor’s degree. Murray best sums up the American job market when he says, “Employers do not value what the student learned, just that the student has a degree” (Murray). However, if less people obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, employers will be forced to base applicants on their skills, and abilities. Furthermore, important vocational jobs that lie vacant will be filled. Good electricians, carpenters, and construction workers will always be in
Credentialing has replaced education, in a way that negatively impacts society, due to the effect it has on the purpose of learning in relation to job status and overall authenticity of a person. Education and credentialing have very different meanings, although they both rely on each other to provide purpose. An education is the accumulation of information, resulting in an overall knowledge of a certain topic, where critical analysis and thought have taken place. Hence, material has not been purely memorized to pass a test, but actually absorbed into the person through a clear process of understanding. However, credentialing is a process that requires education, but the effort to acquire it is minimalized, as it is more viewed as a phase to

This essay is about “GOOD” versus “BAD” jobs and Mass Education. These two things really play an important role all of our lives. In my paper, I will explain about these two things, how they connect with each other and how it affects in social life.
When coming into terms with what a college degree means is simply a certification. In basic terms, a degree is simply a piece of paper certifying you met a certain level of scholastic achievement, but what happens in the class room doesn’t always translate into the real world. College degrees don’t always guarantee a good salary or guarantee a job. There are many high paying degrees, but for every high paying degree, there are two low paying degrees. There are also degrees that have a limited market. Simply having a college degree doesn’t guarantee one will get the job, nor should it. Employees need to bring skills to the table, as well as the ability to continue learning, growing, and providing value for their employer(s). I am not saying people who choose low paying degrees aren’t successful, not even. Many people choose degrees based on what makes them content,...
College graduates have more jobs to choose from. The more years of education one has completed, the more opportunities he or she will have as a potential hire. Some employers would not even consider interviewing a job seeker who has no college education, and many employer...
In signaling theory, Spencer’s argument is that achievement of valid credentials is a crucial signal to an employer about a potential employee’s productivity. In this theory, education is taken as an individual’s effort regardless of the cost of attaining the credentials. In that respect, Spencer makes fundamental assumptions with one being that job vacancies require the prospective employees to have a certain set of skills and personality. In addition, Spencer classifies the pools of skills into two categories of good and bad, with good indicating a pool with potential for high productivity and bad as being an one indicating low productivity. (Weiss, 1995)
The Diploma in Education (DipEd) programme seeksstems to motivate and require the deep soul searching of educators. The Education Policy (White Paper 1993-2003) of Trinidad and Tobago states that our education system will establish and maintain the ethical and moral values necessary for civilized interpersonal and intergroup relationships in our multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. The Foundation Areas, has made me reflect on my teaching pedagogy with a view of and developing new methodologies to improve. I will employ these strategies thatto pupils who engage and motivate students as some of them who display in aggressive behaviors at my school Barrackpore West Secondary. This is one of the main problems faced in my school
