Dinner Party
I walked out into my dinning room where I had been mulling over the table all day. I wanted everything to be just so. I glanced at the place settings for the hundredth time, trying to decide if I should sit Alfred Zingale and Matthias Arndt next to each other. It wasn’t that I was worried about conflicting views, actually it was quiet the contrary, and I didn’t want them to be able to double team the other guests. Finally I decided that just because they have essentially the same opinions, I wouldn’t separate them. In my mind they come as a unit because they had co-authored a book. The place cards had been set and I made up my mind that I would do no more rearranging. I bent over the table in my grey sleeveless dress and lit the deep red candles that were extending upward out of the floral arrangement. The guests would be arriving soon and I began to think over the whole situation. Each person has written a book about the dot com industry, how they can be successful as well as how to invest wisely in one. I was hoping to learn a lot of information so I could make a good decision on whether my company would benefit from being online. These thoughts drifted through my head until the doorbell rang.
I opened the door to a short plump woman with reddish brown hair in her late 40’s was standing on my stoop. She wore a pale green dress suit, but looked quite attractive. She extended her arm, shook my hand and introduced herself as Anita Rosen. As the only woman who was attending the dinner party that night, it was a given who she was, but all the same she was quite pleasant.
John Cassidy was next to arrive. He looked like the typical “guy next door” type. I bet he could have been pulled straight from a magazine. He wore a blue knit sweater vest. As soon as he was in the door, the bell rang for the final time. Zingale and Arndt stood at the door. Zingale was thin with a moustache, black hair parted on the side. Arndt wore glasses, was shorter and much plumper.
Director Paul Feig that is well known for his works in Freaks and Geeks, The Heat, and I am David worked on the movie Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids is one of the examples of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, where the hero face through certain challenges in life. Annie Walker will be the main character of this movie that portrays the hero’s journey. She who has been having problems throughout her life, goes through hardships in order to fulfill her friend’s happiness. Her mother always tells her that “Hitting bottom is a good thing. Because there’s nowhere to go but up” (Bridesmaid). Without thinking twice Annie tries her fullest to impress her best friend to become the maid of honor. Even though another woman is trying to take her place, still, she heads forward to where it would be the hero’s treasure. In this case, Annie’s treasure would be her friendship. The goal of the hero’s journey would be getting what the hero aims for. This movie clearly illustrates some of the steps in the hero’s journey; Annie’s treasure, her hard life and her rivalry.
Trimalchio hosts’ a farewell dinner which is a dinner given to gladiators who were about to face wild beasts in the arena. Trimalchio is a Semitic name based on the word for “prince” and he is a high living individual. However, a well-born Roman reader would not approve of his attitudes and behavior. You get a good sense of what Trimalchio is like early on in the story when he is in the middle of talking to Menelaus and snaps his fingers for a slave to bring him a pot. When the slave brings the pot to Trimalchio he peed in it, asked for water and then used the slave’s hair to dry his hands. (19) Trimalchio had many slaves, some of their jobs were miniscule(petty) that it consisted of them standing near the dining room door and saying “right feet first!” as people enter. Not only do his slaves have (silly) jobs, they are repremended for the littlest of things. When a slave dropped a cup by mistake at dinner Trimalchio responded by saying “go kill yourself, you useless piece of trash.” (37) A well-born Roman wouldn’t appreciate how Trimalchio treats people, it is puzzling he treats them so poorly since he was once a slave himself.
The focus of a psychologist’s study would be to identify the physical, social, mental and emotional issues within the environment that affect human psyche through a predisposition towards violence. This study would involve evaluation of personal life experiences of gang members, to identify the presence of common stressors and factors. Further investigation would be conducted to establish an understanding of how these factors initiate violence within the psyche.
Gang violence has been an issue within the United States since the colonization in the late 1400s. Although gang violence has always been around, larger more organized factions began arising in the 17th century. Today, according to youthinfo.gov more than 700,000 youth were treated in the ER for gang related incidents. While many actions have been taken against gang related, not all seem effective. While very interesting on how people are drawn into gangs, our government must implement more strict measurements against the clans of hooligans.
Liza Ward I imagine wore pearls and a sweet grin; she wrote of abiding emptiness. An image of neatly trimmed edges in navy blue with long brunette waves of classic beauty, her words echo with hollow despair and the impossibility of overcoming the past. Answering the phone for this interview, a high-pitched, girlie voice chirps “Hi, how are you?” with genuine interest. Her novel speaks from the other side, from the silence of a happy life.
We had sat together on the same benches, and yet I hardly recognized her. High heels, furs in which she seemed lost, brown suede gloves dangling from her fingers. The diamond she wore gave off a bright light. I no longer knew her. She was old and ugly, dressed-up this way…I felt like hitting Sarah, and yet at the same time, I wanted to hold her tightly and chase away this nightmare. (Chedid 33)
Anne was not a very good student. She did not like school at all. She could not focus on her studies and her disobedience towards her teachers made them talk to her parents to seek for a counselor. But, her parents did not take the teacher’s advice. Anne’s parents sent her to a boarding school called Rogers Hall in Lowell, Massachusetts. At that time, she started writing poetry and acting. Her beauty charmed many men towards her. At the age o...

Gang violence is a major problem in our society today. If nothing is done soon, gang violence could take place in our neighborhoods. MW Klein, a gang researcher, says that gangs are an aggregation of youths who perceive themselves as distinct, and that are viewed as distinct by the community. Klein also states that the gangs call forth a consistently negative image of themselves through their actions (Klein). To those involved in gangs however, gang membership provided a youth means of attempting to consolidate their gender identities (Douglas). Most of the early American street gangs have historically been ethnically based. Early gangs were mainly Irish, Polish, or Italian (Klein).
A gang can be defined as a group of people who unite to serve a common purpose and engage in violent or otherwise criminal behavior. (http://www.ci.torrance.ca.us) The types of crimes committed by gang members differ between gangs, but the crimes generally associated with gangs include vandalism, robbery, drug-trafficking, assault, arson, and murder. There are many reasons why teenagers may join gangs. The root causes of violent gang formation are poverty, stressed families, unemployment, under-employment, under-education, racism, and the breakdown of sociocultural institutions. (http://www.instanet.com) Many people join gangs for protection from violent people in other gangs. (http://www.public.iastate.edu) Other people join gangs for the sense of family that comes along with it. The youth gang satisfies a void - the child's desire to feel secure. It provides the child with a sense of identity, belonging, power, and protection. The gang provides a protective barrier against the outside world. (http://www.highways.com)

...e quickly pass me and close the entrance door, and return standing where she were to look at me. I was surprise, embarrass, and furious at the same time. Although, I am a well-dressed and professional black woman, a family that I come often to
Gangs have been around for centuries and the earliest mentioning of gangs is the rebellious children in the Bible mentioned in second kings (Cohn). From the late 1800s and 1960s gangs activities included fighting and other thrill seeking activity for youth. In the 1960’s is when the amount of minority gangs drastically increased leading to more gang conflict ,and due to the easy access of weapons crime rates sky-rocketed (Cohn). Organized gangs control their neighborhoods through violence and intimidation; gangs don’t only restrain themselves to one type of crime gang’s deteriorate neighborhood’s in several ways this includes drug distribution, assault, armed robbery, drive-by shootings, auto theft, identity theft, extortion, weapons trafficking, and homicide (Parks). “National Gang Threat Assessment” report states that according to law enforcement officials gangs throughout the United States commit as much as 80 percent of the crime in communities” (Parks). This exhibits the role gangs have in community’s; gangs ruin communities and make it unsafe to live and raise a family in any area that they are located. I pulled into the driveway and staggered into the loud, large and mysterious place. I was surprised at how many people were there. It could have been about twenty or so. I would not know because I am not highly educated. My education actually collapsed after being involved with you. I put all my attention and focus towards you. I can’t count the amount of times I missed class or skipped school. Whilst thinking of this, a young girl came strolling over. She had dark, long hair, brown eyes and a slim figure nearly identical to my own appearance. She wore a white garment matched with pure, silk shoes. Her glamour attracted people from all directions. She looked about twenty five years old.
It seemed that segregation was an idea that has been obsolete in the United States for more than fifty years. However for Charleston, Mississippi it is another story. Charleston High School originally became an integrated high school in 1970. Since then, the seniors at Charleston High School always have had segregated proms -- a white prom and a black prom. In the documentary you see the students worried about the prom, their parents reactions and their future .In 1997, actor Morgan Freeman, a citizen of Charleston, offered to fund the prom if the school had one integrated prom. His offer was ignored. Ten years later, in 2008, Freeman generously offered again. This is where the story begins.
