There was no one inside the four-unit apartment building when the small Hawker 700 plane smashed into it Tuesday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. That means no deaths or injuries on the ground, despite the jarring crash and massive fire that followed. On November 28, 2004 at about 10:00 a.m. mountain standard time, a Canadair (now Bombardier) CL-600-2A12 (Challenger 600), tail number N873G, crashed into the ground during takeoff at Montrose Regional Airport (MJT), Montrose, Colorado. The aircraft was registered to Hop-a-Jet, Inc., and operated by Air Castle Corporation doing business as Global Aviation. On December 21, 1988 the world was shocked as a Boeing 747 Pan American Airlines flight from London's Heathrow Airport to New York City crashed in a fiery ball due to a terrorist-placed bomb in the forward luggage compartment. After the explosion the plane proceeded to break up into three different parts. The wings broke off separately, as did the main fuselage, and the first-class/cockpit area. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the failure of the flightcrew to monitor the flight instrument during the final 4 minutes of flight, and to detect an unexpected descent soon enough to prevent impact with the ground. Preoccupation with a malfunction of the nose landing gear position indicating system distracted the crew's attention from the instruments and allowed the descent to go unnoticed.

Reported by (McCown, 2013), the Instrument Landing System (ILS) was not switched on and the crew are unable to use instrument to align the aircraft with the runway. This has resulted in the crew to have flown above the standard height for approach, needing a sudden drop in both speed and altitude when the aircraft is near the airport. When the crew was decreasing altitude and speed, they allowed their speed to drop significantly below the approach speed causing the aircraft to further lose altitude and crash. This was due to the crew not using the aircraft’s auto throttle system to control airspeed.
After the accident, a full-scale investigation was launched by the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). It concluded that the accident was caused by metal fatigue exacerbated by crevice corrosion, the corrosion is exacerbated by the salt water and the age of the aircraft was already 19 years old as the plane operated in a salt water environment.

The NTSB conclude that the possible cause of the accident was the captain’s improper response to the activation of the stick shaker, which led to an aerodynamic stall from which the airplane did not recover. The possible factors causing this accident were: (1) the flight crew’s failure to monitor airspeed in relation to the rising position of the low- speed cue. (2) the flight crew’s failure to adhere to sterile cockpit procedures. (3) the captain’s failure to effectively manage the flight (4) Colgan Air’s inadequate procedures for airspeed selection and management during approaches in icing conditions.
