When you think of love, do you think of many types or just one? In literature love is expressed in a variety of ways. In the story Midsummer Night’s Dream the author William Shakespeare uses many types of love. Usually everyone automatically comes to the conclusion that there is only romantic love. Love can be portrayed in a variety of ways, in this play Shakespeare expressed it in parental, romantic, and friendship love.
One type of love Shakespeare uses is the most widely known – romantic love. Lysander is in love with Hermia and proves it as he says, “My love is more than his. My fortunes every way as a fairly ranked, (if not with vantage) as Demetrius’. And – which is more than all these boasts can be – I am beloved of beauteous Hermia”

Egeus is a very protective father as he demands, “He hath my love… And she is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius” (Shakespeare 1.1 96-98). Egues loves his daughter so he tries to pick the man he believes is good for her. Being a protective parent and caring for their son and/or daughter is a very big characteristic of parental love. Titania is not the actual mother of the Indian boy, but she is in charge and is the closest thing to the boy's mother that is living. Titania shows parental love as she says, “But she, being mortal, of that boy did die. And for her sake do I rear up her boy, and for her sake i will not part with him” (Shakespeare 2.1 121-123). Oberon is trying to take the boy from Titania, but Titania loves the boy and will not give him up. The Indian boy does not have a mother, so Titania makes herself the parental figure and takes charge of the boy by not giving him up. Another example of parental love also involves Titania as she explains, “ Set your heart at rest. The Fairyland buys not the child of me” (Shakespeare 2.1 106-107). Titania will not trade the boy for anything, not even the Fairyland which is a big deal. She is determined to keep this boy because she loves him, and is the parental
Fate and Love in A Midsummer Night's Dream & nbsp; & nbsp; There are many instances in A Midsummer Night's Dream where love is coerced from or foisted upon unwilling persons. This romantic bondage comes from both man-made edicts and the other-worldly enchantment of love potions. Tinkering with the natural progression of love has consequences. These human and fairy-led machinations, which are brought to light under the pale, watery moon, are an affront to nature. Shakespeare knows that all must be restored to its place under fate's thumb when the party of dreamers awakens.
“The course of true love never did run smooth” ~William Shakespeare. In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Theseus and Hippolyta plan their wedding, which includes a play by the craftsman. While the other characters are trying to figure out their love for one another, the fairies interfere. Throughout the play the characters alternate lovers often. Although they bicker at one another, everyone finds their way to their true soul mate. The characters in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream are successful, after many trials and tribulations, in acquiring their desired relationships.
Is love controlled by human beings who love one another or is love controlled by a higher power? There are many people who believe that a higher power has control over love. An example of a higher power would be a cupid, a flying angel-type creature who is supposed to shoot arrows at people to make them fall in love. There are other people who reject the idea that a higher power controls love and that the people who experience love can control it. In the novel, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", by William Shakespeare, several examples of love's association with a higher power are presented. With the use of examples from the above novel, this essay will discuss the evidence that love is associated with a higher power. Examples like: Thesius arranging a marriage between himself and Hippolyta, Egeus choosing who Hermia should marry and the fairies who have the ability to control love in the Enchanted Forest.
What is love? Love is a very powerful emotion! Love is something that can come at any time in your life. It can appear in any way, shape, or form. In the famous play “Midsummer Night's Dream,” by William Shakespeare, love is a major theme that affects many people and causes many challenges. In order for love to conquer these challenges one needs to stay true to their love, they may need the help of some magic, and must be persistent.
Some of the most prominent themes in A Midsummer Night’s Dream are the omnipresence of love and desire and the tendencies of characters to manifest their defining traits. Helena and Hermia are two perfect examples of this. Hermia is the lover, and Helena the desirer, and both thrive off of their obsessions. In fact, both women are so tied to these traits that when they are taken away, their characters deflate and fall static.

In our society, love can be portrayed in thousands of ways. With simple things such as giving someone a hug or something more elaborate such as marriage. These things show are affection and love towards others, but it does not just end there. In Romeo and Juliet, as well as our society, we portray many different styles of love. These styles of love that I thought were portrayed well in Romeo and Juliet were physical love, emotional love, and paternal love.
Love is a powerful emotion, capable of turning reasonable people into fools. Out of love, ridiculous emotions arise, like jealousy and desperation. Love can shield us from the truth, narrowing a perspective to solely what the lover wants to see. Though beautiful and inspiring when requited, a love unreturned can be devastating and maddening. In his play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare comically explores the flaws and suffering of lovers. Four young Athenians: Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia, and Helena, are confronted by love’s challenge, one that becomes increasingly difficult with the interference of the fairy world. Through specific word choice and word order, a struggle between lovers is revealed throughout the play. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses descriptive diction to emphasize the impact love has on reality and one’s own rationality, and how society’s desperate pursuit to find love can turn even strong individuals into fools.
Fairies, mortals, magic, love, and hate all intertwine to make A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare a very enchanting tale, that takes the reader on a truly dream-like adventure. The action takes place in Athens, Greece in ancient times, but has the atmosphere of a land of fantasy and illusion which could be anywhere. The mischievousness and the emotions exhibited by characters in the play, along with their attempts to double-cross destiny, not only make the tale entertaining, but also help solidify one of the play’s major themes; that true love and it’s cleverly disguised counterparts can drive beings to do seemingly irrational things.
Different Aspects of Love Presented in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream Lysander + Hermia = True love? Sexual Attraction (Lust) ------------------------------------------------------- Titania + Oberon = Love or hate (Married )
The theme of love is dominant in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare suggests that love is like life, it is highly unpredictable,
Love is a powerful, passionate affection for another person. It can have many affects on someone, positively and negatively. It is now better understood with the help and discoveries of scientific research. Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy that poorly expressed the true representation of love. The love demonstrated in the story was based of off Cupid and his arrows. “What Neuroscience Tells Us About Being in Love” states that there is chemicals in the brain such as oxytocin, serotonin, and Dopamine that better explain love. The love depicted in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is expressing the difficulty and confusion that comes with being in love.
Throughout the events which unfold in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare delivers several messages on love. Through this play, one of the significant ideas he suggests is that love is blind, often defying logic and overriding other emotions and priorities. Helena loves Demetrius unconditionally and pursues him despite knowing that he loathes her; conflict arises between Helena and Hermia, childhood best friends, over Demetrius and Lysander; and because she is in love, Queen Titania is able to see beauty and virtue in the ass-headed Nick Bottom.
In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," William Shakespeare explains the difficulties of the nature of love. Both false love and true love prevail in the end, leading the reader to come to the conclusion that all types of love can triumph. Hermia and Lysander represent the existence of a "true love", while Helena and Demertrius represent the opposite extreme. Shakespeare presents the idea that love is unpredictable and can cause great confusion. Love is something that cannot be explained, it can only be experienced. Shakespeare challenges us to develop our own idea of what love truly is.
The play expressed several more types of love, but I have written and gave examples of just 3. Love is defined as an intense feeling of deep affection and many of the characters in the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” showed just that. Love is not always perfect and people go through different obstacles when they are in love with one another. No matter what kind of love was displayed in the play, “Love prevails over
