Lincoln said to himself that he was going to play this basketball game for his own good. He was going to root for Franklin, but still make sure that Columbus doesn’t look like failures. Some explorers were not looking for land to claim, but faster routes. Columbus went exploring trying to find a faster way to Asia/India for spice trading. The reason for this was because his country was receiving Asian Spices from Muslims(Document 3). In order to get the spices from the Muslims, high prices had to be paid since it was exchanged from person to person. Columbus went sailing and found an area that had inhabitants who looked like people he has never seen before which he assumed were Indians. Jackson and Lincoln are considered the best presidents in United States history for many reasons. Jackson was president when the country seemed to be more stable and at peace. Lincoln was President when there was more conflict and war.
Many Americans know the journey of Christopher Columbus and Daniel Boone, but a smaller percentage of the population knows about other journeys their fellow Americans have taken. Our job at PBS is to “create content that educates, informs, and inspires (PBS mission statement).” By including different or lesser known journeys for our new series, we can inform and ignite a curiosity for American history that is not often talked about. Two journeys that should be included in this project is the plight of the Native Americans during the 19th century. These forced migrations are not frequently talked about for various different reasons, such as the history behind them or their controversy, but it is our job to present these without biases to inform our viewers.

Frederick Douglass and Mark Twain very similar but they were also very different. Douglass and Twain both wrote stories during their lifetime. When they wrote their stories they would write about their past lives and their personal lives a well. They both grew up with brothers and sister but they were also had some differences in their lives. When Frederick Douglass would write he had to make the audience believe that his story was true. The reason why people didn’t believe him was because he was a former slave and they thought that he was just making this story up. On October 12, 1492 Christopher Columbus landed on unknown territory, however, in his perspective of Earth he thought he made a new route to Asia. He travels throughout the lands, soon, he discovers new forms of inhabitant plants, as well as, indigenous people that were native to those lands. Years later he soon unravels that it was all unaccustomed terrain. The monarchy of Spain also discovers Columbus’s new discoveries, then, they send more explorers to conquer the lands. In 1520, Hernan Cortes goes with the order from Spanish royalty to go to the newly discovered lands to conquer them, also, help expand the Spanish empire. Overall, Columbus and Cortes both reported the new lands they recently discovered back to Spain, however, their descriptions

It is the common hymn, the classic American rags-to-riches myth, and writers such as Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass had successfully embraced it in their works.Franklin and Douglass are two writers who have quite symmetrical styles and imitative chronology of events in their life narratives.
When the battle of Gettysburg, known as one of the bloodiest battles in history, ended, the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, gave his famous Gettysburg Address. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the thirty-second president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, gave his speech to Congress that would later cause Congress to declare war on Japan, thus creating World War II. Each president was elected for at least two terms. Lincoln could not serve out his second term as he was assassinated about a month after being reelected for a second term. While both presidents and their respective speeches have influenced many, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speeches were more effective than Abraham Lincoln’s speeches.
Education is a privilege. The knowledge gained through education enables an individual’s potential to be optimally utilized owing to training of the human mind, and enlarge their view over the world. Both “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” by Frederick Douglass himself and “Old Times on the Mississippi” by Mark Twain explore the idea of education. The two autobiographies are extremely different; one was written by a former slave, while the other was written by a white man. Hence, it is to be expected that both men had had different motivations to get an education, and different processes of acquiring education. Their results of education, however, were fairly similar.
Since Columbus’ trip across the sparkling Atlantic, America has transformed from a disunited band of British colonies and has evolved into a world power. Improved technology, enhanced communication, and increased opportunities all have risen in the 400 years between Christopher Columbus and Charles Lindbergh crossing the treacherous ocean. Nevertheless, both adventures were unique in their aims, challenges, essential skills, and results.
He had just beaten out George B. McClellan for president. McClellan wanted the country split into two- one slave-holding and one free. However, the country had chosen Lincoln, they wanted the country to stay together. People wanted too much of Lincoln. He would have enemies no matter what choice he made. So now, instead of staying passive like he did in his first Inaugural Address, he took a stand in his second. He told the country that God sent the slaves to them early in this country, but now He wanted them gone. The war was a punishment from God for all slaveholders. Contrary to what today’s society believes about Lincoln, he was not a popular man with the South at this time. The South wanted to expand towards the West, but Lincoln created a geographical containment rule keeping slavery in the states it currently resided in. Despite his trying to rationalize with the South, Lincoln actually believed something different ”Lincoln claimed that he, like the Founding Fathers, saw slavery in the Old South as a regrettable reality whose expansion could and should be arrested, thereby putting it on the long and gradual road ”ultimate extinction” (216). He believed it to be “evil” thus “implying that free southerners were evil for defending it”(275). Lincoln wanted to wipe out slavery for good, and the South could sense his secret motives.
In reading through Abraham Lincoln: the Man Behind the Myths, I have seen my views on Lincoln pretty drastically changed. Prior to this novel, I took the very common stance of Abraham Lincoln being one of the greatest presidents we have ever had. Now, I wouldn’t say I am nearly as passionate about Lincoln as any of the authors mentioned are, and therefore I believe myself to be rather blind to the mythology built around Lincoln. However, despite this blindness, I will say that my eyes have been opened to who I believe Lincoln is as well as what my perception of him has to do with what I’m told. Oates does indeed have biases similar to the very authors he puts down, however, Oates seems to be trying to reach a more realistic realization.
One of the many brilliant things Ben Franklin once said was, “Well done is better than well said.” Being a pioneer of electricity, the inventor of bifocals, and one of the founding fathers of the United State’s constitution, Franklin knew more than a little about changing society and history for the better. The ideals of this successful man are parallel to the ideas of John Ruskin, who describes that as a society, “What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do.” This is outlook is accurate because, quite simply, there is a higher impact when something is done compared to when something is simply just thought.
With that being said, his only concern was with preserving the North. The north had a supplemental army, prestigious factories, and rations. Compared to the south where they did have a low army size, but lacked supplements and essential training skills needed to defeat the Union. During the Civil War, Lincoln did not want the North to declare victory over the south. This was because the south did not want to secede from the north without the abolishment of slavery occurring. The thing is that despite Lincoln being an advocate for freeing the slaves, many people living in the South had already predicted that slavery was bound to end at some point. In the end of the war, the north ended up winning the, and it vastly improved their economy, abundance of military equipment, and industrialization in factory settings.
